We've probably split his wages between bright and one of those defenders.

It'll be ok if we get Clarke-Salter, or someone of similar quality, too.

Do get the feeling from Robins comments we’ve got enough left in the pot for one more decent signing. Whether that’s Cranie/Souaré or an actual decent signing not sure.
I agree, still think we could see a relatively exciting signing come through the door in centre mid.. or am I dreaming?

Paterson is currently still on trial at Middlesbrough and by all accounts his wage demands were beyond what we could realistically offer.
Reportedly he asked Middlesbrough for the trial rather than the other way round. Has struggled with injuries during his trial and it sounds far from a given he will get a contract (although Middlesbrough have a few injured which could help him). Personally think Paterson is the type of Championship player out of contract who may be in for a bit of a shock in terms of what wage he can now command.

He should get in touch with Derby

Really? Everything I've read suggested he was invited but perhaps it was a case of his agent putting him forward and Warnock agreeing to take a look at him.

You're probably right but we still won't be signing him now Robins has chosen to bring Bright back.

The majority of his players of his ilk are likely in for a shock. I said the same towards the end of the season that Championship journeymen are going to find it tough to find clubs who will be willing to not only offer them the inflated wages that they previously enjoyed, but to take them on at all. No doubt he'll find a club as he's a good player, but make no mistake it'll be on the club's terms, not his.

Warnock on Patterson 2 days ago

‘He asked to come in and we wanted to look at him in certain areas,” said Warnock. “But (on Tuesday), I wanted to get Isaiah (Jones) on in the second half to give us a bit more pace going forward.

“I wanted the other lads to get the minutes in. But he’s done well, and he’ll probably be involved on Friday (in Boro's final pre-season game at Rotherham) as well.”

Sarkic who we were linked with but went to Blues (and some people wanted instead of Moore), apparently had a shocker against West Brom today.

Blues lost 4-0 and he was at fault for a couple of the goals.

He's not, Cheltenham rejected him after his trial (as did Doncaster).

0% chance he's coming here though.

He needs to get his career back on track somehow, a lot of these people you would think were good earners are in for a real shock in a few weeks. A lot of the leagues bigger paying teams either can’t sign players or are happy to wait.

Agreed. Think he & his agent need a reality check. Sounds like Cheltenham had all but agreed to take him until Crowley/his agent moved the goalposts.

Looked very comfortable in the Netherlands, maybe he could go there ?

A lot of truth in that piont and agents now face players with less money being offered or not playing unless premier League players and not before time.

There’s going to be a huge scrap heap of footballers in the next few months.

Players can’t get the wages they once earned, clubs at the level they thought they would get a gig aren’t interested, clubs are cutting squad sizes… the pandemic finances are starting to show.

Does this go for fans aswell? I mean people keep talking about underwhelmed they are about signings? Shouldn’t they also be in the position to accept we may not sign the players we actually want?

the good players are still in demand, and can still command more than we can offer -see James and Walsh

I still don’t understand this reasoning. Players have to drop their demands as it’s a buyers market. So team willing to expand their budget (as we apparently have) should be able to get better quality not worse.

I think even at this stage the players still believe they will get the big money and their agents will be pushing them to get the most they can, it will be two or three weeks into the season when reality starts to hit them.

Im guessing there is a still a significant jump between the wages players we need to take us to the next level might be on/want and what we feel we can afford. You only need to look at the mess Derby are in and some of the wages clubs like Sheff Weds were paying to see how clubs overstretch themselves in the championship. It’s unviable but might take another window or two for players to realise this….but even then they’ll still be some clubs willing to take a punt on getting to the promised land

The alternative is gambling on L1 players who might or might not step up.

I’d rather we gambled. I thought that was the model. Sheaf, Walker & O’Hare we’re essentially L1 gambles last season.

See I disagree, the good players will have 3/4 teams after them. The likes of Bright and Moore are probably cheaper than usual.

but your James’s and Walsh’s will still be in a position to ask for higher wages

You’re going to have to explain like I’m 5.

Good players will always have suitors sure, but as fewer clubs are spending there’s fewer suitors for the same number of players no?

You can’t really count James anyway as he will have taken a massive wage cut anyway and Bristol have shedded loads of their wage bill in the summer

No there isn’t, there is always the same number of suitors for the better players. There’s only 2/3 clubs that haven’t brought in anyone. The championship still has a number of clubs with parachute payments, Bristol still have a billionaire owner. Everyone is after a finite of good players.

sure, the crap or declining players are going to have to lower their wages becuase teams will be prioritising their budgets on the better players.

Still not sure I get it but it’s Sunday morning and I haven’t had my coffee so will defer
