I’ve got one for you The Motor, my first pub on the corner of Somerset Road and Dorset Road, you’ll be surprised not many know it.
Moz Kilcoyne, his brother Dave runs the Cherry Tree in Craven Street, or used to, big city fans, sadly I don’t think Moz is with us anymore.

I'm sure Ray Winstone was the celebrity who opened Scholars on their opening night ?
The story behind that and I don’t know how true it is is that they weren’t allowed to knock the pub down for some reason due to the actual Hawthorn Tree at the back something to do with preservation low and behold it suddenly caught fire.
It’s a strange world.

Was owned by Ken Brown (of Browns infamy) and his mad daughter (Mary?) used to be a regular sight in there. They were always up there own arses and could be right twats on the door sometimes (just like Browns new and old), but it was always rammed at the weekend in the mid to late 80’s. Any idea when he took it over?
Got a feeling that site (Ash Green Social Club) is about to be re-developed soon.
Lovely words about a great bloke. Gus and his wife ran the Dog and Trumpet but left to set up Scholars.
He wasn’t there for the opening but he filmed a short film there called Bouncers which you can watch on YouTube - think it was based on something written by Geoff Thompson.

Are there really that many pubs left where you'll get bother for not being a local. Wherever I go round the country to see friends or family I'll go into a pub or few and never see any trouble.

Thanks for that. I just recalled Him there in some capacity. Yes Geoff wrote Bouncers and has gone on to write numerous books and plays. Shame Geoff has stopped all social media a complete shut down of his sites. He was prolific on Facebook and Twitter and had daily web chats etc. Not sure what happened but now he is hard to contact.

I was bought up in Jardine Crescent.the banana flats for those that know Tile Hill, My old man used to work at the Standard Triumph and he used to go over the Prince most nights,late 60,s early 70,s,much to my Mums annoyance
Houch, what was the name of the pub in Hen Lane Holbrooks just before the railway bridge and do you have a picture? Cycled past it so many times going to see my grandma and there was always a horse and cart tied up o the car park. Got houses on it now though......no fucking surprise!!

Ah yes! Used to love the Motor Hotel. It has to be the weirdest shaped pub ever. Because of the junction it was on, it was like a wedge of cheese.
We went there quite often in the late 80s/early 90s because they did fantastic curries for next to nothing, plus decent beer. Another pub doing curries back then was the Charterhouse in Terry Road. I lived in Coventry and worked in Birmingham and my mates from work would come over to visit these places, so good was the food.

Set back in the woods on Tile Hill Lane a bit, down from Tile Hill College and pretty much opposite Hereward College if you’re driving down the hill towards Assumption school.
I would say the Motor was the first multi-cultural pub Asians in one bar and whites in the other, but got on well. They used to have inter pub games such as dominoes,darts and the little football table in a small room down the hall based on home and away so we would play in their bit one week and visa- verca the next the name calling from both groups all taken in good nature would be arrestable nowadays, winning on away turf was like beating the Villa away.

I bumped into Baz a couple of years ago when I was over in Malaga playing Golf . Got a couple of tickets for Malaga v Barcelona. Got off the coach outside a pub and there he was . Had a great catch up .
