Its boarded up at the minute but hadn't noticed the big city badge before, it must be quite new :)

Slightly closer to where I live than the Newlands, but I have never been inside the Black Prince. I have seen a minibus outside there sometimes on match days, so I assume they run trips to games?

Sounds like something from The Football Factory where the Legion congregate for a few pre-match sharpeners. Definitely not on my to do list.

It’s a great pub . Worth a visit everyone welcome, you’ll be surprised how friendly it is .
Has it changed much over the last 20 years? I remember someone getting their head smashed repeatedly on the kerb outside by one (well known) local. Poor chap is no longer with us, perpetrator got 7 for manslaughter. Used to drink in the New Star (also no longer with us!) back in the day and that was bad enough, but like Rainbows compared to the prince.

Proper Old School local boozer for local people. (We'll have no trouble around here!).

The first place my Missus' uncle heads back to when he visits from Wales. OK if you know people in there, will be viewed suspiciously if you don't......

Not been there but surely it would only take a couple of visits to become a regular.

Or you could do what I do and assert dominance by striding directly to the biggest bloke at the bar and stick a two footer on him early doors to let everyone know you are there.

I used to live not far from the Black Prince and likened it to another pub of similar reputation - The White Horse in Broad Park Rd. Another one was the Shire Horse in Caradoc Close, Henley Green.

I used to visit most of the pubs in Coventry as part of my job in the 70s. Those weren't the only dodgy dives back then. Just off the top of my head I can recall some places you wouldn't want to be in on a Friday night. The Winnall and the Glade in Willenhall. The Chequers in Stoke Aldermoor. Worst of all was probably the Live & Let Live in Wood End, where the landlord showed us a number of chair legs stored under the benches so that he had a weapon handy wherever he fell if he was attacked.

If it’s like the black prince of old, I’d just avoid it personally. Some lovely characters used to drink in there....

Im amazed it’s still there. Along with the Dolphin a very dodgy pub. What was the other delightful place on the edge of Jardine Crescent called?

I’ve been in there for a pint. Wasn’t too scary, and I’m not exactly a hard nut.

I had a quick chat with the barmaid, nodded hello to the locals, drank my beer, went home. Nobody bothered me - I don’t think you’ll get hassled just for being a stranger.

Reminded me a bit of the Brewer and Baker, as was, or The Hub. Bit rough and ready, a bit loud for my tastes, and a few were probably a bit too pissed for the time of night I was there, but no bother unless maybe you went looking for it...

Start off in the White Horse, over to the Shire, and back to the White Horse for a stay behind. That was during the week, and still got up to go to work . Weekends start off in the Acorn, then down to the Craven Arms, end up in the Red Lion. Would kill me now, and a few did pass away through too much drink. Crazy days !

I was looking at a property last week in Radford. I walked past another well known pub The Grapes which was boarded up. That had a reputation I heard years ago ?

Perhaps 40 years ago, I agreed to play for a Walsgrave pubs darts team for a short while. We had an away match at the Live and Let Live and made the mistake of taking an early lead. Going by the growling and muttering, we didnt try too hard from then onwards and eventually lost. At the end, the post match sandwiches were brought out and I dont think we even got close to them as the non-playing pub regulars dived in and cleared the lot off. Again, fine by us ! All we really wanted was to find 4 tyres still left on our cars outside !

Used the Live and Let Live regularly which probably had the worst but somewhat exaggerated reputation in Cov. Back around 1978/79 a young family were tragically killed in a house fire on a Friday night, big Percy one of the casualties played in our darts and domino teams, by the Sunday night over £4K was raised, lot of money in those days, not saying a lot but a couple of days later the local Post Office got knocked off.

I won't hear a bad word against the Live And Let Live! I worked there behind the bar around the time my eldest daughter was born - 1971. Great crowd of locals, great staff and nowhere did I feel safer behind the bar, and I've worked loads of bars. The locals always had a whip round for the staff at Christmas, and there was usually half a week's wages each - good money back then! Happy days!
