EFL to end season this week - City likely to be promoted (5 Viewers)

Surely not !!! he is all about the "integrity" of the competition and no self interest at all, trying to get his tinpot club promoted
So he wants the play-off positions to be extended so that Peterborough make the play-offs and that will ensure the integrity of the competition, sounds like he wouldn't know what integrity was if it bit him on the arse

Looking at both the weighted and unweighted tables, only Posh are the ones who lose out for a play-off place. Relegation remains unchanged.

Tranmere might kick up a fuss, but that leaves only 2 teams who would vote against the EFL proposal on Monday.

Posh and Tranmere.

No if it was weighted Pompey would miss out.

I'd give my right arm not be in the Prem. Losing every week. Success = avoiding relegation. Tedious. I have been pleasantly surprised by the League 1 standard.
So next season then if by miracle we're pushing autos you'll want us to blow up? Sorry I just cant understand this mentality. Yes the prem is overated but every fan of every club surely wants to see them play at the highest level? Also I guess your thinking of us in the prem being owned by these wankers. Who knows what would happen in the top flight with a new owner. Sisu certainly would be out of their depth as they would be in the championship.

Besides that, if we are awarded the title and rightly so... What a fucking great 3 years its been supporting city

Yes. Agreed. In my world (I know) we would be back in the city. But I’ll take the promotion and then just hope we are back at some point.

Next season behind closed doors will be interesting. No discussions about Fand B or the journey to St Andrews. It may be pay per view and could even mean a break away of the championship for TV revenues.

Although I’m not a huge fan of the premiership it in particular would make Ricoh ownership far more a reality and would be a way to make the place work.

I find it interesting that the EFL has changed its stance from a weighted PPG solution to unweighted. Especially after Posh’s Chairman threatened legal action. After all, unweighted PPG takes Posh out of the playoffs, whereas weighted keeps them in.

Seems a Machiavellian move from the EFL, as it outmanoeuvres Posh by essentially splitting them from the other clubs who are in playoff contention. Or, if the EFL is being clever, forces P’boro to throw their weight behind weighted PPG so they don’t miss out.

Ironically, by insisting we play on because Posh can catch Rotherham for an automatic (playing lower teams at home etc) may have alienated the EFL.

That’s what the cynic in me thinks, maybe it’s a coincidence.

Please excuse the intrusion to your forum but would appreciate your comments. As a Rotherham United supporter of 54 years (and yes I know I could have been out of jail by now) I would appreciate your opinion.

Clearly every club is looking after itself but of the six teams Sunderland and Ipswich have nothing to gain at all. Fleetwood, Portsmouth, Oxford & Peterborough clearly have.

Whilst appreciating all the bluster given last night, the fact that league 2 have decided to finish puts more pressure on them.

It would be interesting to see if the party of 6 stay together on this, but with the carrot of a play off, I wonder what thoughts Fleetwood and Oxford have on this. The reason being, however ppg is decided be it weighted PPG or standard, they are in the play offs irrespective of which method is used. Potentially do they stick or twist? i.e accept play offs or risk a further 9 games and go for 2nd and run the risk of getting caught by Sunderland or others, not in the mix?
Weighted Ppg- ( favoured by League 2 this afternoon) means Portsmouth are out of the play offs
Standard ppg ( favoured by EFL) sees Posh miss out.

Wycombe would be guaranteed play offs either way.

Would appreciate your views but do you think some of the 6 will break ranks?

I don’t think it’s that deep - league 2 wanted it done that way and they just want it done - I doubt the no relegation clause in L2 will stand up

I suspect it didn't go to a vote and I bet they absolutely don't want a 12-11 vote (which would be 51%). Every club now knows where all the others sit, so they now go away and think. And hopefully the losers realise they have lost and tow the line, even if they shout and moan about it. As a poster noted, two teams are in the play offs regardless of method and are more likely to break ranks.

Tranmere chairman has confirmed there was no vote today and today was never about a vote but to look at various options. Monday is the vote and he confirmed 51% of vote required to pass any solution.

Rotherham United chairman Tony Stewart speaks out as League One clubs fail to agree
By Paul Davis | 15/05/2020

Tony Stewart

ROTHERHAM United chairman Tony Stewart pointed the finger at the 'Magic Six' as he revealed a split between clubs had prevented a vote to end the League One campaign early because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Third-tier sides met this morning via a conference to try to thrash out a solution but were unable to reach an agreement and a follow-up meeting is planned for Monday.

Most clubs are believed to favour calling off the campaign now because of the financial impact of taking their players out of furlough, introducing Covid-19 testing and playing behind-closed-doors matches which would generate little income.

There would then be a vote on whether the current top two - Coventry City and the Millers - should be awarded promotion on a points-per-game basis.

But Peterborough United, Oxford United, Portsmouth, Fleetwood Town, Sunderland and Ipswich Town - the teams generally just behind the top two in the league standings - are adamant the season should be played to its conclusion.

"I don't think there were sticking points," Stewart said this afternoon. "I think what happened was Rick Parry (EFL chairman) decided to open it to whoever and the magic six, and I am sure you know who they are, are thinking that they could have got to higher heights.

"Then there was a split with the lower clubs saying they couldn't throw money at things.

"There was a split but I do believe if it went to a vote it would be for a cancellation.

"I am going to have a word with Rick Parry, because the testing, everything that goes before you kick a ball, all that comes into play.

"Here we are we another meeting that is going to kick on to Monday and Tuesday. I am like most chairman. I am frustrated by the indecision.

"We need a decision on whether we fulfil the fixtures. The other option is the best option."

League Two clubs today voted to call off their season and have automatic promotion and play-offs but no relegation.

Stewart, whose team had played 35 of their 44 fixtures before the league programme was suspended, added: "I wish we could be as decisive as that. It is ridiculous. I believe there are two options now: one is to fulfil the fixtures totally and the other is the top two will go up, three will go down and the next four from the top will be in the play-offs."

MORE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Attempting to finish the season:

"There are anomolies with regards to the 'no tackles' issue and contact. If we do return, it means we've played 35 games in one type of game and the next nine in another type of game. That's not taking into account that along the way someone could get the virus and the impact of that. There's the travelling. You can't get a hotel. There are lots of things that seem to be an obstacle. I can't see us overcoming the obstacles that are there. It is quite frustrating."

Next meeting:

"They have allowed us to ponder the meeting today. I am hoping it is Monday. We were told there was going to be a decision by this Wednesday, then it was going to be Friday and now we have got the weekend. We are running out of time."

Frustration:

"Meeting after meeting. I just don't feel as if we are moving forward. We seem to be talking about the same thing. If I was to assume anything I would assume the problem lies with the Premier League. Without money coming from them or the Government, I can't see some teams getting to Christmas."

Speaking to Parry:

"Because we are in the second position, I have not been vocal. I need to try to get some persuasion into a decision being made so we know what we are doing. League Two havemade their decision, not only the decision not to play but also the decision on where teams are sitting next season. They have got all the time now until August or whenever to prepare."

Covid-19 testing for players and staff:

"The comment in the week would be that the EFL would pay and then we got an email saying 'This is the cost' and that it would be borne by each club. That is in the clouds at the moment. Chairman like me are laughing at it. We have been starved of cash. We have not earned a bean in the last seven or eight weeks. We are not selling season tickets and sponsors aren't jumping out of the water. Everything is on hold but expenses and costs are still there."

I thought L2 voted weighted PPG rather than unweighted?

I can't imagine weighted PPG has ever been mentioned by the EFL, didn't it only come about when Prem teams kicked up a fuss about having more home games left than away?

I've never really understood the weighted average, just because you've beaten Bolton, Tranmere and Southend at home doesn't mean you'll then go on to beat City Rotherham and Oxford if they were your remaining home games. To add genuine "weight" you'd have to include lots of factors such as form, strength of opponent faced/to face etc.

Sunderland and Ipswich involved cause they'll do well through ifollow which will fill some of the gap they're going to have refunding home tickets sold

Indont see how that’s possible as the proposal hasn’t even been reviewed and approved yet. As I say I’m not sure the no relegation would be approved

Unweighted PPG benefits teams like Wycombe. Who have played most of their home games, the majority of their remaining fixtures are away games and their home record is a lot better than their away record.

It would also have benefitted us when our away form lagged behind our home form.

Either way, a PPG scenario sees us promoted, so I’m not too concerned.

Sorry, not voted.

The reports suggest their ‘favoured’ outcome was weighted PPG with no relegation.

I just find it interested that the EFL later mentioned unweighted when The Athletic reported their favoured outcome was a weighted PPG outcome.

That also mentioned the bizarre scenario of going at the half way scenario which was never mentioned

Playoffs should be played. It is wrong to promote a 3rd placed team. A mini tournament played at a neutral venue would lesson the health risk, so makes sense. 8 instead of 6? We need to look closely at the current table to draw conclusion. There is just one point separating 3rd and 8th. Oxford though would have a case for saying they would have been 2nd not Rotherham, with another game played. Rotherham's form over their last 5 games played is shockingly bad tbf. Sunderland are out of it, playing 36 games already. Posh and Wycombe have a case for being in there. Posh have the best goal difference than anyone, which suggest they are a better team than Wycombe. Weighted PPG looks less fair than just PPG. I think its a strong case that both Wycombe and Posh are in the playoffs. I think Rotherham should be in the playoffs with them. They are by no way safe in 2nd place. Oxford won their last five games and looked set to replace Rotherham. CCFC are far ahead in 1st with a game in hand, so no dispute there. If we are looking for sporting integrity the playoffs for League 1 should be:

Rotherham
Oxford
Portsmouth
Fleetwood
Peterborough
Wycombe

I see Joey Barton has chipped in, saying giving us the title instead of playing for it, it would be "meaningless"!! well it might be for you, Joeyboy, but for us?? absolutely PRICELESS and fuck who cares how we win it. No-mark club with the same for a manager
Haha fuck Barton the poisonous little twat. I'd be over the moon to be handed the title. Let's be honest we fucking deserve it. We're plainly the best team, and we've had to endure no end of shite in the last 2 decades.
I've got my '87 scarf and my Championes chants at the ready haha.

Just listened to posh bloke - bla bla bla we want to play - and Tonis being sold as he wants championship football
He’s gambled big on his strikers and ballsed up yet again. It’s like Groundhog Day for them. Maybe next season if he’s still in charge he’ll learn to build from the back instead of blowing his beans on strikers they can’t really afford every time. They get what they deserve in my opinion.

I have never really been a fan of play offs, exciting yes but a team that did considerably worse over a season can get promoted. All this fuss over play off's people forget for years it was the top three. Play offs are there to generate income nothing else
