“If we can get out of league one, then you feel that the serious work begins.”
Lol
That was incredibly arrogant. I thought the transfer dealings were the most interesting part, particularly seeing their owner go from being annoyed at having to put in a 'final bid' for Grigg of £1.25m to a few hours later paying £3m rising to £4m for him.

I think where it does well that other football ones don’t is the lack of a narrator. The story is told by the staff, players and fans so it comes across as genuine.

When you have some gruff voice actor telling you how gruelling the season is and going through all the cliches it feels hammed up.

Pun intended? The NFL ones on amazon are narrated by John Hamm.

There seems to be something funny and amusing for football clubs to have decent, passionate fans. There's more of them, but they are no different to us or any other club. Remember the bloke close to tears holding the sign "We'll Be Back" when we went down? Amused at fans crying after losing at Wembley? Think I'd have shed a few if Exeter had beaten us.
Yes, it's Sunderland, yes, there's history, but I felt sympathy for those decent fans throughout the series. We take the piss about them being Billy Big Bollocks in our league, but they are! 46,000 fans against Bradford City is remarkable.
We all love our bit of banter, but we shouldn't get bitter and twisted with it all. Now of all times maybe we should start showing a little respect to others.
Just saying like........
Nah they're all Wilkinson's shoppers

I couldn't get over their claim that they were running the club at "break even"......surely, that included the parachute payment. Next season will be interesting?

It’s decent watch. Only seen first episode, to be fair thought Stuart Donald comes across pretty well. The meeting between that Charlie and the four others (hopefully in the top echelons of the club !!!) was cringeworthy/comedy gold.

wait til you see the Will Grigg episode

SD: I want to sign a 30 goal a season striker.
Richard Hill: So do Real Madrid
SD: Wigan are trying to shaft us over a fee for Will Grigg, let me check with Jack Ross to see if he thinks he’s worth more money.
JR: don’t pay any more than £1.25m for Grigg. He’s not that good.
SD: Hello Wigan? How about if we buy Grigg for £3m+?

Bloody hell! Through to episode 6 already.

I may be at home, I may be completely bored but I'm not so masochistic to sit through several hours of watching Mackems goading the whole league saying they are the best team we'll ever see in our lives (paraphrasing) and several more hours with more salt water than The Perfect Storm (movie with George Clooney).

Just for clarity, I jumped in at the 3rd episode and scanned on fast forward to a game, checked the date of that fixture and moved forward appropriately. So I actually saw 2 mins of their game against Gillingham, some tears with them against Portsmouth at the end of Episode 5 and then flipped to Episode 6 and FF'd again. Luckily, we were the first game.

Really? I thought they'd a least show Chaplins winner and them all losing their shit...

To be fair, they did. But they didn't show us going 3-0 up, just the fightback and our conclusive winner. Then a straight jump to the boardroom after the game. At which point, I switched off.

Errr well you can imagine the production team sitting with the Sunderland group watching the Final editing and them saying oh well not too much of Coventry or the Mackems won’t watch it

We didn't go 3-0 up - sorry for being pedantic. Enjoyed the episode. Have to say, I thought Stuart Donald came across well, but that Charlie Methven (can't be arsed to look up the spelling) came across as a slimy, smart arse know it all.

But he was also the guy whose marketing nouse got over 46,000 people to attend the Boxing Day match, breaking the League One attendance record. Imagine someone like him bringing that experience to bear on getting bums on seats at StA.

The way he treated that marketing lady wasn't right. Basically bullying her.

She must have been made redundant, as didn't see her in another episode after that one.

Like you I found the sequencing last series awful, showing goals being celebrated at the wrong ground etc, I hate stuff like that.
I was watching that 999 on the front line which is filmed in cov. I noticed them driving the ambulance to a call out somewhere in cov and it showed them driving both ways down Ansty Road, I weren't pleased
Maybe they forgot where the hospital was.

No problem, I acknowledge my error and thanks for correcting me.

They should have offered higher wages to Maja and a bigger cut to his agent, if he had signed the new contract I think they would have gained automatic promotion.

Then they only got 26 thousand at the playoff game. Hardly a marketing genius that fella

It’s not shown just how much Maja was after to be fair. Then the chairman acts like a problem gambler with how the Grigg signing was conducted. He was told by his own manager that he wasn’t worth breaking the bank for but in desperation trebled the bid. Grigg has since scored 5 in 40 games.

My view was that Methven was a colossal prick and that Donald got too emotionally invested and started making very irrational decisions. This season he gave some dude a charge over everything at the club in exchange for a £10 million investment. He needs to be told to stop.

That guy Methven seems like a character from the office. Really full of himself and an oily personality.
Is he still there?

Great shout though!! It seemed the agent was after some money. How much would he have got from 1.5m euros and a new contract with a similar agreement for the agent would have been perfect. Not that I care of course

The agent is a dog with fleas
Sends most of his young players overseas to maximise his own rake off
His players include Jaden Sancho and Ademola Lookman

You've gone very quiet since posting that!
Don’t knock him.....It must be a great feeling and very life enhancing to discover that something previously one had little or no interest in turns out to be something one just can’t get through the day without.

He only got 25k attendance for the first leg of play off semi final. Both the owner and the CE were massively out of depth. Very funny endings with 2 wembley defeats, but Netflix rushed the editing of the final 2 episodes way too quickly.

I get that of course. But the different solution is a great shout
That's true but the EFL in particular are trying to limit agent's fees to 5% of the value of a deal
It doesn't apply to deals that send the player o another country, which includes Scotland

Yep true and we don’t know what else they tried. Will Grigg unmitigated disaster for them

Season 1 is far superior to Season 2 - S1 really shows how precarious the situation is for all the people on the periphery of a team like Sunderland (the kitchen staff, the squad players, the everyday fans). The second season barely touches on that, and is more about the ridiculousness of the new owners, which is hilarious, but there's no reason to care about them once they prove themselves to be idiots after episode 3 or so.

The show itself makes me miss away days more than ever. Sunderland fans may be arseholes, but they're long suffering the same as us.

I think the opposite, the others show a sanitised behind the scenes that a club want to portray, they always come across as some wining machine, this doc actually shows the reality for 95% of football clubs, chaos, divisions and failure i.e. football.
I was glued to the QPR documentary’The 4 Year Plan’ with the billionaire owners. There was incredible access and total chaos. Really worth watching for those who haven’t seen it.
