I remember when we signed Wayne Turner and me and my mates laughed, stating that someone called Wayne should never ever play professional football.

Of course, then Wayne Rooney came along and it became cool again.

Good footballing names are, IMHO ...

Bobby
Dave
Pete
Johnny
Steve
Mike
Kyle
Sam
Matt
Billy
Alan
Tommy
Terry
Danny
Nick
Charlie
Tony

Names that should be nowhere near a football field.

Nigel
Tarquin
Rupert
Sebastian
Humphrey
Dominic
Cyrille (sorry, Big C).
Egbert
Chester
Basil
Augustine
Irving
Oswald

Add Jordan to the true footballer name list and Gerald to the nowhere near a football field list.

Nigel Winterburn wasn’t that bad.
Nor was Oswald (Ossie) Ardiles ;)

Has there ever been an Algernon?

I do mean footballer and not just life in general.

Surely Roy is a good football player's name as in "Roy of the Rovers"?
