See this is where I part with the left. I believe in citizenship bestowing certain rights and therefore those who aren’t citizens not having those rights. I don’t see nation states, nor attempts to police borders as inherently racist.

It may be that a majority of those being deported are non white but that’s not why they are being deported and a non white UK citizen would have nothing to fear obviously.

The points about having served their time and government not interfering in sentencing are fair ones, no need for the racism rhetoric. Save it for when it’s valid.

I agree with you, but Windrush has really clouded the issue with the repatriation of people who had every right to remain here.
I think if that hadn't happened there wouldn't be as much fuss about this latest round of deportations.

I think you’re right and Windrush is obviously still a big thing in many communities. But the majority of voters will just see a bunch of rapists and murderers getting deported and think “good”.

Priti Patel comes out and says "there is no such thing as 'dabbling' in drugs, it is a very serious offence".

Jamaicans with fully spent sentences for possession of cannabis= lets deport the bastards even though they've been here since they were 5

Boris & Gove go on TV saying that took Cocaine= ooh aren't they daring and wild

The media has fulled the appetite of the public to see people who aren't white english to be sent packing, while excusing the 'right type' of people for exactly the same thing.

That’s class not race though. Unless you think Kwazi Kwarteng would be being deported right now.

Its a combination of things, but its certainly not just about class, its majorly about race as well. Its deep seated, its in the way they think- they don't come out and openly say racist things (well Boris does), but you see it in everything they do.

If it was all about class then they'd widen the net a bit further and bring to rights anyone who goes around saying they've taken drugs who isn't in the upper classes- the Home Secretary said its a very criminal offence after all- but they don't, they go after black & brown people who've been here since they were kids.

Just another example of the institutional racism that now dominates the country at the highest levels.

Do you have examples of non white immigrants being allowed to remain after committing these types of crimes!

What makes you think it’s playing a part here?

Because:
white people take drugs & supply drugs... no big deal, often dealt with by caution in fact.
non white poeple take drugs & supply drugs... kick them out, send 'em back where they came from (even if that is actually Croydon)

But then when you have an openly racist PM who is buddies with a US president who vilifies immigrants, and who tries to hire people that write papers on how white people are smarter than black people, what do you expect to happen.

By the way, the "very serious crimes" that the Jamaicans were deported for include class B drug convictions (a packet of codeine in your back pocket), and not filling in tax forms correctly.

The country now does not welcome non white people. If you are not white you are living with the constant fear of whether you are the "right type of person" and you know that you will get dealt with far more harshly than a white person doing the same thing. And what actually is the "good standard"? Where are the rules? the PM talks about taking drugs, Gove talks about it- are they the right standard of person?

Its a fact that 10 people took the UK government to court for discrimination when they were threatened with deportation, and 9 won.

The lines are being obscured, nobody knows where they stand, all we know for sure is that if you're not white then you need to watch your every step because our glorious leaders are just looking for a way to boot you out.

Again though you’re putting a racist spin on it but the salient fact is that these people aren’t U.K. citizens not that they’re black. A black person born here isn’t being targeted at all and would have nothing to fear.

Johnson’s surrounded himself with white nationalists and we can be fairly sure is a racist himself but you still need to catch him in the act and for me this ain’t it. As I say it seems more like an elephant trap designed knowing U.K. voters won’t be too upset at a load of foreign criminals being kicked out. Keep our powder dry for the inevitable actual racism IMHO.

So someone who was born in Jamaica and who was brought here when they were 2, and were given indefinite leave to remain, and who has paid taxes etc for 35 years, has a family here, and who has no tangible links to Jamaica any more apart from distant relatives- are they a UK citizen?

The definition of "citizenship" stinks, there is no right minded person in the world that would say that the UK is not their home country, but catch them with some weed and they suddenly become Jamaican and we waste no time getting them outta here.

The Harry Dunn situation is completely different. She hasn't been tried for starters. What a ridiculous statement.

Your logic is instead up facing up to 14 years in jail in the uk for killing that boy and then absconding , We should try her, and when the guilty verdict comes just deport her back to the US to live out her life like nothing ever happened.

You keep making the assumption that anyone convicted here and deported would be given a heroes welcome back home, a wad of cash and a 6 bed detached house for their troubles .

No, it's quite clear everyone I have not made any of those over exaggerated assumptions.

You're making the assumption that anyone convicted here, and deported straight home would serve time in prison in their own country. The Harry Dunn case is a good example, there is zero chance that if we extradited her, found her guilty of causing death by dangerous driving, then immediately stick her on a plane back to the US, that she would serve any prison sentence back in the US. That's not justice.

I don't see how anyone could say you were saying anything else apart from that, but some people aren't playing with a full deck on here though.

No clearly they aren’t. I accept the cost of citizenship is ridiculous but as a principle if you think the U.K. is your “forever home” and have nowhere else to go you should be applying for citizenship.

The point remains that shit citizenship procedures aren’t inherently racist, they’re shit citizenship procedures.

What does "indefinite leave to remain" actually mean then? It seems to mean people can stay until they find something trivial the person did a decade ago so that they can turf the person out and split them from their family.

Its way more that shit citizenship procedures, its about finding any way possible to remove non white people from the country. And that is undeniable, factual, a reality of this country right now every day. Take a minute and compare the amount of people deported to USA, Canada, anywhere in the EU, Australia etc compared to Jamaica, Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Eastern Europe, Asia as a whole- I wonder what the glaring difference might be between those two broad sets of people?

Its the colour of their skin and the public perception of them as dictated to the public by the right wing racist media. This govt knows that booting out non white people is a vote winner, and my god they're seizing the opportunity. Like I said, its just another example of the huge shift to the right we see every day in England.

OK, I took a minute and read this: Deportation and Voluntary Departure from the UK - Migration Observatory

It has this graph showing if you add EU and non EU European countries together they’re easily the largest group.

Fair play shmmeee for including some facts to back up your arguments rather than making sweeping statements. I’d also read in 2018 I think 68% of those deported were white.

ROS - there is enough genuine racism in this country without trying to find it around every corner. You make it sound like it was some kind of ethnic cleansing when we are talking about the removal of a relatively small number of criminals (many of whom havent just ‘done some drugs’ but were inside for far more serious crimes)

I could be throwing around crazy unfounded comments that those who wanted to stay in the EU and retain FOM, whilst keeping an immigration points system for African and Asian nations, are racist because a majority coming from the EU would be white. I wouldn’t ever make that suggestion because it’s quite frankly ridiculous, but you can see the way you can spin stuff if you’re looking for it to fit with your argument (James O’Brien does it every day on LBC)

How do you explain that since the referendum result, non EU migration has risen and Johnson also relaxed student visa laws encouraging foreign students to stay in the UK longer after finishing university ? Those dwarf the deportation numbers so if there was some covert government plan to get rid of non white people, then it’s a pretty shit one !

Ps I agree the ‘citizenship laws’ appear to be a mess but as shmmeee and maybe some others have said, that’s nothing to do with racism, just a shitty system. The windrush scandal was a disgrace but this is very different
