What's in a name? (1 Viewer)

I have a meeting next week with someone who's first name is 'Rufus'.

Automatically I think he is a twat.

I've never spoke or met the guy before, and he could be the nicest person on the planet for all I know!

Is it just me? Are there any other names that make you automatically hate them before you meet?

Tarquin's are always posh and therefore automatically tosspots. Only ever met two though.

It is weird though, because for many years every Mandy I ever met was gorgeous and every Sarah or Sophie, lovely.

Never met a nice Sharon or Tracey.

Bob's are usually dependable and chirpy chappies and Dean's are usually ones for the ladies.

Shan't tell Mrs OSB about your post, Otis! But for the record, she's lovely!

I think throughout history, the evolution of names has largely been based on people's inability to spell. So many names have been mis-spelt but are phonetically correct. This happens with surnames, streetnames and place names too, and often happened by people who COULD write trying to interpret the spelling of something spoken by someone with a strong accent. Norfolk village names (Wymondham and Happisburgh to name but two) are a completely kettle of fish, and god knows how they came to be spelt and pronounced the way they are. I think maybe they're just all m..m..ma...MAD!
Sorry - went off-topic a bit there!
What i was meaning to refer to was a kid the year below me at school was called Sean. A-ha, no problem there, i hear you cry. EVERYONE knows how that is pronounced. Except this Sean's parents, it seems - so he went through school (and presumably subsequent 40 years, god willing) being called (phonetically) "Seen". Poor sod - but i don't ever remember him being bullied for it. His sister was in my year and drop dead gorgeous! Fionnulah her name was - pronounced Sue by her parents!!
