Last season we picked up 65 points at an average of 1.41 per game. So far this year we're picking up 1.78 per game.

To finish 2nd last year you would have needed 89 points (Barnsley got 91 but still would have gone up with two fewer), that works out at 1.93ppg. If we take it that this will be the same this year (although I expect it will be lower) then the total points needed over a 44 game season would be 85.

If we were to revert back to last season's average from here then we'd finish with 72 points which is way short and would even have resulted in us missing out on playoffs. Maintain the form that we've had over the course of this season and we're looking at 78 which is bringing us much closer to the required total while still falling short.

However, if you take this date last year and calculate the games played afterwards we start to average 1.53ppg an improvement of 0.12 over the season average and a much bigger upturn of 0.18 of the 1.35ppg from the season so far. During that period we played 6 of the top 7 away from home.

This season if we can maintain the same upturn as last in what is widely regarded as a weaker division and with our more difficult games at home then we will finish the season with 1.96ppg or 86 points.

Lads, it's on.

Good work Carol.

For what it's worth, I think we'll also do it...autos that is. Not sure if we'll finish top or 2nd but I don't see us finishing 3rd or lower. Yes the strikers could score more but we're potentially 2nd on goal difference...we're obviously managing with goals from other areas of the team and are generally tight at the back.

I agree with Shmeeee about the next 7 games being season defining. I think we need to be looking at 15-17 points from those. If we do, we're up. Someone mentioned that they would take 4 draws against those top teams we have to play...whilst that 'could' still work, they would send this place into a massive meltdown. 'we draw too many', 'we don't win enough' etc etc. Let's hope it doesn't get to that. Defo need 6 points from Bolton/Pompey though. Fingers crossed.

With Bury not being in the league it changes the Dynamics of the points required!

I’m sitting on the fence. Way too many variables still at this stage (especially with the amount of games in hand etc). I’d be disappointed if we weren’t challenging for automatics if key players remain fit (and not suspended) though

Was having an interesting chat at work today about how well we're playing etc, and got asked 'call it now where will we finish'

Snap response i said 4th, play off final v Peterborough .

So i thought I'd throw the question out to you all.

If you were to say right now, with what we have left, what is the gut feeling?
Autos. With one of Rotherham or Pompey. The one that doesnt go up will win the play offs.

I think 2nd is the most 'Cov' way of getting automatic promotion.
I'm hoping MR is keeping Jodi Jones in reserve for the last 10 game push, to give us something a bit different.
According to a Wolves supporting mate of mine, Giles likes to bomb forward and has pace to burn.
Combine these two 'new' faces with the existing squad, and it could be a new dimension to our overall play.

I think we will just miss out on the top 2 but finish in the top 6.

If we miss out on the top 6 then this season has been a failure.

The most 'Cov' way of getting promoted is to not get promoted

Get your hotel booked before the prices go up! But then again it's only Blackpool plenty of 2 star B and B to book.

Should be a lot of fun though.

Portsmouth and Rotherham to be the top 2 - don't know who would be top

City, Peterborough, Ipswich and Sunderland - who knows what order

  • Wycombe will not drop out of top 6 until the very end - they have some easy fixtures coming up
  • Donny might just sneak in to the top 6 at Sunderland's expense
  • Unlike last year when the top 6 were settled quite early, this will rumble on. There are a number of good teams whom any in the top 6 might slip up against - Fleetwood, Burton.
  • Games in hand rarely convert into maximum points. That is what will do us

First.

If you can’t see how good we are, even with a lack of a clinical striker, you’re either oblivious or have been a Coventry fan too long and on default pessimism mode!

Tongue in cheek aside, this squad is more than capable of finishing in the autos and anything less will be incredibly disappointing.

Although I won’t be requesting a taxi for MR, blaming individual players or SISU if we don’t. And I certainly won’t be looking forward to the hysteria, and in some cases pleasure, on here.

You won’t have to wait for the end of the season for the hysteria m8, anything less than 3-0 tomorrow and they’ll be calling for public floggings in Broadgate

you are right though, certain posters will take a macabre delight if we don’t go up.

Rotherham will take some catching now. It's essentially a 9 point gap because of their superior goal difference. Games in hand or not, it'll be tough to catch them, as they're looking strong. Our game against them is huge.

Autos has to be the aim, we're certainly good enough. Gut says playoffs though.

Then again if we win today, nothing’s changed, still 5 points with 2 in hand and still got to play them. Like you say, massive game — six-pointer if ever there was one.

It’s not a six pointer. Six pointers are against teams near you. It’s a massive three pointer though.
