How much does a club get for a finishing position in the Championship and avoiding relegation?

I understand that there is a sliding scale for league position which doesn't include TV rights, and all the other add ons etc

Are there still parachute payments etc for teams which bounce between the leagues?

I think Parachute payments apply to relegated teams not promoted ones. Not too sure what the prize money is but sky pay between 100-140k per TV game to the home team and around 10k for the away team

Every Championship club gets separate payments from the PL of £2.3 and £4.5 million respectively, total £6.8 million. As stated above TV revenue varies between £100-140 k per home game with £10k for every away game. There does not seem to be the same bonus for higher league positions that exist in the PL but in practice going higher up the league means more TV appearances so a higher return that way.

Parachute payments have changed in their structure so that you get:

£46 million in Season 1
£38 million in Season 2
£17 million in Season 3 if you were in the PL for more than 1 season before getting relegated. It doesn't matter if you flit between L1 and the Championship.

Sunderland are in Season 3...

I need to reframe the question a little.

Is there much difference in revenue, costs etc from a club in our current league position to one surviving in the Championship?

Yes. It’s mostly the difference in the fixed Basic TV award and a ticket down/solidarity award from the premier league. League one approx 1.4m in total and Championship about 6.7m.

That’s regardless of league position. Then have some variable revenue from televised TV games.

Over £100m if you stay up for two seasons in the Prem. What a fucking joke that is.

If you were SISU you would try and stay in the Prem for one season playing championship players on £15k a week and you will get not only £100m just for getting to the Prem but another £80m for the inevitable relegation!

Huddersfield took an approach not far off from that and used the cash to spend on facilities. Plus they stayed up a season longer than anyone thought so they get more cash in the third season too. Some of their fans will argue the money was wasted though

Imo the championship pisses all over the prem for excitement/competitiveness. Best league in Europe. Real football for real fans.

The prem is fairly predictable the championship is just crazy even with the unfair balance of the parachute payments teams come from nowhere

Gate receipts higher in The Championship too, due to the much higher away followings,

If a club bounces straight back to the PL after one season, does the parachute money they would have got for season 2 still get equally divided amongst all the Championship clubs ?

Think we all know that if we did make it to the Championship we would most likely come straight back down.
It’s not like the Championship when Thorn took us down and we just couldn’t compete with players changing hands for 6-7-8 million pounds.
Guess we could try and cross that bridge if we ever get to it.

Worthy of a bump in my opinion :D

Parachute payments are the biggest scam going. Just write into players contracts that they have to take a 40% pay cut after relegation but have to have an agreed release fee.

Thing id that would make it less competitive as the players would sign for those who are less likely to get relegated and newly promoted teams wouldn't get the opportunity to sign players who could compete.

That’s where squad sizes come in. Squad size of 25 and if you don’t make it you’re released and have to wait till the next window opens to sign for a club.

But they're going to sign for clubs less likely to be relegated anyway unless they get offered a massive amount more money, which is then even more onerous on the club if they do go down. Half the time the players on these massive salaries at lesser clubs coast along anyway as the expectation is low. Fair few times I've felt we've got a squad capable of top half and ended up just surviving 'cos it's Cov innit'.

If anything it might help with getting the younger lads playing for lesser clubs than being hoarded in top clubs U23's. If they perform well they know they'll get the chance to move on if the team overall aren't good enough, but if they don't perform they don't get the massive wages after relegation.

More positives than negatives for me.

I agree with the squad limits but I think 25 is too small. Should be at least 3 per position, especially if competing in numerous competitions and gives some scope to bring through some youngsters if desired.

I'd go with a squad of 40 pro contracted players, inc U23. Not sure if I'd automatically say released as it'd make things very uncertain for players but they have to be available on a free transfer. Unless you're saying if they get released the club in question has to pay up the remainder of their contract as well?

Compromise on 35 then and yes. Contracted so they have to be paid but available on a free.

Squad size as big as you want but only players under 21 can be loaned out

Doesn't stop them hoarding players though. Sometimes teams will buy a player just so someone else can't have them - make the rivals weaker rather than yourself stronger.

Players can sit on the bench/play reserves and earn far more money at a top club than as regulars elsewhere. That's what I'm trying to prevent. Plus if anyone over 21 can't go on loan you're effectively making the lesser clubs weaker as there's even less talent to choose from.
