Cockerill is from Leamington Hastings, Johnson from Solihull, Richards from Nuneaton, Garf was a Binley Park boy, Rowntree from Burbage, Back a Woodlands boy.
The rest quoted are from much further afield (Middlesbrough, Liverpool etc, and one was born in Malaysia).
When Cov slipped backwards and abandoned their youth programme, Leicester and others came in and mopped up the likes of Goode, Grindal, Balding etc etc (who formed the backbone of the England age-group sides of the nineties) plus Cockerill. They also picked up Leon Lloyd and several others - like Back - who once upon a time would have almost certainly joined their local Cov club, while England caps Danny Grewcock and Rob Hardwick were also poached from the Cov club by Sarries and London Irish.
Leicester have never been backwards in pulling quality from all over the country. Cov always relied on the abundant local talent, but when that started going up the M69 (etc) the writing was on the wall.
Hopefully those wrongs are about to be righted.

They're infighting again:

Agree with Shugs that we have plenty of good players in the squad. It's poor coaching that's the issue

Maybe Matt but rot stops at the top and Eastwood to me is the main man. A bean counter from the RFU now out of his depth with Wasps and as an architect of the £35m bonds and Ricoh plan has bankrupted Wasps

Take out the bloated useless management and then address the troops

UKMS

Firstly Wasps are not bankrupt

Was Eastwood the architect of the Bonds ? I’m not defending the guy but you make a very sweeping statement here with little basis.
End quote.
...........

Morally bankrupt is a given.
Financially is perhaps moot. Not being a bankruptcy practitioner (or remotely near being one) I always thought it was a sort of 'debt over assets' kind of calc that could precipitate bankruptcy in theory?
Or is that too simplistic? Probably.
Whatever, unless they can somehow get the Ricoh valued pretty high now, it's certainly not looking good, and making one or two of them question things.
All grist.

Anytime one points these out over there they are accused of being SISU lovers. Sounds familiar

Was in the same year as Back at woodlands. Always was a bit of a dick. (Don’t tell him he’s a big fucker).

The vast majority of Tigers who played for England in the early nineties and beyond (i.e. at the start of the professional era) were home-grown or local - the likes of Rowntree, Cockerill & Garforth in the front row, Neil Back, Dean Richards, Martin Johnson, Ben Kay, Lewis Moody, Austin Healey (though he moved around a bit), Rory & Tony Underwood, Will Greenwood, etc, etc. It has only been since they started trying to get big-money signings (and coaches) that they have gone off the rails.
Wasn’t Neil Back from Coventry.

A bit? He's a feckin tosspot arrogant twat (I was quite a few years ahead of you and him at Woodlands). As is Cockerill. I knew the latter when he was a kid running round the village like he owned it.
Don't know what it is about Tigers and arrogant players. Dean Richards was (is) just the same, as my mate can testify as he was a Special Constable working with him on the beat cars around Lutterworth. Nasty piece of work, PC Richards.

Ha ha. Yes he did like himself rather. Was always one of the good boys though, if you know what I mean. Hold on - maybe that’s why he had a career as a professional sportsman and I didn’t :)

Possibly. Me too.
Gary, apparently is a different fella entirely. Perhaps just playing at a local level like most of us keeps the head level?
Same with John Cockerill. Really nice guy, unlike his fancy-Dan brother. John played for Newbold for many years. (Frighteningly fast driver though, as I can confirm through a couple of trips to Vicarage Road!).

Not sure if it's been said but Neil Back's son, Fin recently signed a pro deal with Nott'm Forest.

Let's get this thread back on track. Nice talking about Cov Rugby but that's not what it is about!....
Thoughts on Wasps saying they have sold 20k for their "Christmas cracker" vs Harelquins??... looked at table, Harlequins only one win better off than Wasps...
Would be a sickener seeing a big crowd and a win wouldn't it!!.....

Think that's a liberal use of the word sold. They were stood in Broadgate the other day giving out tickets to anyone who wanted them!
