As it's England's 1,000 International match this week, they've been talking on the radio and online who would be in your best ever England team from over the decades ? Obviously it's down to age as younger fans choices would probably differ from older ones. Anyway here's mine. 4.3.3. formation.
Banks.
Armfield.
Pearce.
Terry.
Ferdinand.
Gerrard.
Gascoigne.
Moore.
Bobby Charlton.
Greaves.
Shearer.
My manager has to be Alf Ramsey for winning the World Cup.

Think I would have to have Bobby Moore in there.

Greaves is a given. Lineker ahead of Shearer too though.

Not much defensive cover in midfield... Plus there's probably loads I've missed.

Just read John O'Farrell's book, 'There's Only Two David Beckhams' - very funny read and an interesting twist on England's best team ever. It's a novel and you only need to be a football fan to enjoy it not necessarily an England fan.

Ashley Cole was a left back. Surely Terry gets in ahead of him in his natural position if you’re playing a 3-4-3?
Why don't you pick you own team instead of arguing about mine?

Good shouts for Platt above. Used to watch his volley against Belgium at WC 90 on the old VHS all the time. Those who watched him then would you say he’s underrated in these discussions?

This what the Beeb has as the result collated from the poll.

I don't think I can argue against any of those choices at all.

Who is Beckham going to cross to? Owen?

My team hasn’t been picked on the ability to head a football. Saying that though if I came up against your team and a player who’s playing as a centre back who for the whole of his England career was a left back I may have to change tact

Only issue I have with that team is no midfield destroyer/workhorse. Need Bryan Robson in there for either Gazza or Beckham. Shame Duncan Edwards died so young because he could've be immense.

I'd prefer to do a squad so I could add in some people like Wright and Matthews who deserve a mention but prob don't quite make the final team.

Is it true the squad numbers tonight will somehow reflect their place in England player debuts like cricket (ie if they were the 1,500 player to play for England they would be 1,500)?

Always an idea I've liked and would love to see us do at some point. You keep that number throughout your time at the club (or if you come back) and when you leave/retire your number is automatically 'retired'. So if you want a legend on the back of a shirt in future they have their own number for it.

On the back of shirts it may need adapting cos 4 or 5 figure numbers would look odd but it gives every player a place in club history and stops arguments over who gets what number.
