Best goalkeeper in recent years (1 Viewer)

I was going to title this thread beat goalkeeper we’ve ever had but realised it’ll most likely just see oggy so I was sat at home wondering who people think is the best keeper we’ve had in years. I’ve been very impressed with marosi and think he’s certainly one of the best we’ve had in recent years but personally the best I think I’ve seen would surely be Kieran Westwood the amount of goals he saved when he was in net was unbelievable.

in my time as a city supporter

1. Jim Blyth (by a mile)
2. Oggy
3. Les Sealey
4. Keiran Westwood

Could not agree more. Blyth is not discussed enough as an absolute legend. I remember if his transfer to United had gone through it would have been a world record for a keeper at the time. He's always the first name on my fantasy team of players I have watched in Sky Blue.

On my 18th I got to train with the team. I was told that after 15 mins of training (running), I was able to take some shots at Jonathan Gould.

He didn’t make training that day as he put unleaded in his diesel car that he’d had for 3 years !

I’ve never seen a city keeper knock it around like Marosi. He’s obviously not played enough yet to be in the conversation but if Stockdale gets a nod then so does Marosi for me. (What do I know, I thought Burge was fine for league 1 level)

Marosi is certainly the only keeper we've ever had who looks as if he could play outside goals and not be out of place at all. The only question mark I would have (and hope to be proved wrong over time) is his ability to dominate the area and collect crosses. Don't get me wrong - I truly think Marosi has been an excellent signing.

With Stockdale though I had absolute confidence that if the ball was crossed in he'd collect it (and then set up an attack).

In the League 1/2 era Murphy was always dependable and I don't remember many mistakes from him. Marosi still a bit early on to call but has looked a decent signing so far.

On a technicality Kasper Schmeichel?! Only a few games on loan but definitely had the best career of any recent gk to have played for Cov.

Owned by us Westwood was easily the best post prem goalkeeper.

Used to love Magnus Hedman. Joe Murphy had far too many critics. Westwood was magnificent and Marshall was a very good back up.

But top of my list would be Kevin Pressman.

Bit before my time, what was bell-endy about Sealey?

See Covkid1968s post just above mine.

He had a bad relationship with the City support after that and would give out and receive a lot of stick when he returned.

He lived fairly locally to me when he played for City and was known to be a bit of a twat.

On a far more outrageous technicality you could throw Peter Shilton into the mix as the greatest keeper ever to be on the books - even though he never made it onto the pitch!

I see what you are saying Clint.

Sealey (taken from us at the age of 43) was certainly a larger than life 'Cockney geezer' and not lacking in confidence in any way. He's actually an iconic figure at United as many believe that his epic performances in a short cameo saved Ferguson from the sack. 1990 when Sealey played a big part in their LC win.

I will remember him most from our own League Cup run in '81 - the semi-final game against West Ham at home was the most intense and memorable night I experienced at HR. RIP Les and thanks for the good times.

But until the Pep/tiki taka era it was never really a consideration for a keeper.

I'd argue it has arguably gone too far the other way now and the ability to play the ball is given higher consideration than goalkeeping ability. Sort of understandable at the top teamswho don't need to defend as much but for others it's a risky game. Marosi looks like a decent mix.

If some of those keepers had to play at a struggling team it'd be an absolute horror show, but on the other hand good keepers like Cech started to struggle when they were being asked to play the ball out.

I think that's right Dreamer.
But you could go back a little further. Fabien Barthez was the first modern keeper who was technically good enough to play outside goals.
I watched the Qatari U21s train (long story!) a couple of years back and it was very notable how much time was spent on technical kicking skills for the keepers. Qatar is taking the national team very seriously in preparation for the WC and has employed some of the best coaches in the world - as evidenced by their win earlier this year in the Asian Cup beating Japan in the final.
Anyway what I'm trying to say is that I totally agree - ball playing skills are essential for the modern keeper given rule changes/possession football. Oggy I think would struggle with that as well in the modern game even though he was a brilliant keeper in his era.
