They sent me a form (this was before the internet) to see if I would qualify.
Yes, you had to qualify, they don't let just anyone in.
It was a points-based system. Points being awarded for factors they consider desirable to them.
Factors being things like your age, marital status, family connections, education, occupation, finances etc.
It turned out I was too old.
Age counted for a lot of points and I did not have enough points in the other categories to compensate.
The only way I could have got in was if I had money to invest in a business that would employ New Zealanders.
Of course, I was pissed off I did not qualify but I had to admit it's a sensible system for them.
