What were the reasons against then?

I'm all for it if it's someone who is the best at the job, not just there to tick a box. Alex Scott is one of the best pundits out there, and she deserves it. But some of the women commentators they have are awful

Pitch is no real problem. Someone mentioned that either you are good or bad. I'd much rather listen to Alex Scott than Jermaine Jenas, Martin Keown, Chris Sutton, Garth Crooks, Savage... I could go on. Some yank woman was on the women's world cup though and she was fucking dreadful.

There are bad commentators of both sex.

I will go against most on this as I think Alex Scott is very limited but Jenas is worse

On a serious note; what a stupid question, I'd love to hear a guy talk about this subject in front of their Mrs to see the reaction. What next eh women taxi drivers, women plumbers. Worlds gone mad!

I think they're all shit and talk absolute bollocks, commentators that is, not pundits. John Motson was tedious as anything and that clown Clive Tyldesely on ITV, words can't described how much crap he talks. Can't understand how much of them found employment and continue to find it in that industry.

Commentators and pundits for me Marty. They just love the sound of their own voice and spouting utter drivel. Commentators I have a little sympathy for as they have to keep talking for most of the game and are bound to mess up at times...BUT pundits have agendas they need to air and teams they either love or hate.

Commentators (esp on radio or from radio backgrounds) are told to keep talking hence all the stats and guff about kits, the ground, fans etc. Almost doesn't matter what you say, just say something. I find in that respect the women are as good as the men, it was just odd to begin with because you weren't used to the higher pitched voices. I have wondered if those that don't like the women commentating are partly due to old sexist stereotypes and attitudes but also because as you get older your hearing at higher frequencies diminishes somewhat so it may actually be more difficult for more senior members to hear?

Pundits are supposed to be there to provide expert analysis and most of the time it's just cliched bollocks you could get from the stands. Again the women can be just as good as the men and in some cases better. Depends on the individual.

I thought it was odd to begin with, not because of lack of knowledge just tone of voice.

If they know football then it's no problem.

They are women's voices, not military style whistles in your eardrum ffs!!!

Lineker has the most annoying voice on TV and yet is paid millions I believe to front MotD. Also think that the great Dion has an incredibly boring tone and tends to talk in clichés. There's some great female commentators out there - very impressed with Alison Mitchell on 5 live Test Match Special and often find Agnew infantile and tedious when he wanders off from talking about cricket.

I prefer female commentators for women's games, especially women who have played the women's game and are knowledgeable about it.
I like a mix of male and female presenters (Kate Abdo is excellent, I also like Rebecca Lowe) especially if they have good chemistry.
I can't see any valid reason for having female commentators for men's games. Possibly a low-key female co-commentator might be ok.

I think on the pundit side they seem to offer less knowledge and insite and there seems to be a determination have a proportionate number for some reason

For me on that it’s a bit weak

Oddly Isa Guha (cricket commentator and pundit) seems one of the best on sky. She mixes well with the ex male pros, has a clear knowledge and understanding of the game and is an excellent presenter of the highlights show

I think also the two female in game commentators of sky when they go around the grounds are usually the most insightful. Agree on Isa too, she is v good

What's a "low-key female co-commentator"?

it does sound a lil weird. like if a kid was commentating. but that dont mean its not right. we will get used to it

i like the women pundits on podcasts, i can understand why ya mate has issues with 90 min commentarys though

Isa is very good. As is Alison Mitchell on TMS.

Alison Mitchell is also good because she has a nice voice that you can listen to , Alex Scott has a terrible voice.

I think she's got a voice very similar to Holly Walsh.

I'll amend your comment to what it should've said: "In my opinion, I find AM to be a good commentator and has a lovely voice, AS I find to be not so nice on the ear."
You're comment suggests AM is good because she has a good voice and it's a matter of fact AS has a terrible voice!! It's subjective not scientific.

Slightly off topic but how about Anna Woolhouse who seems to now have the gig as the lead presenter on most of the Sky Sports boxing?

Pet hates of commentators of both genders:

1. Using guttural stops to sound hard
2. Self tautomerisms e.g. 'that's gone off player x so it's a throw in to team y'
3. Use of the phrase 'highly rated'
4. Blindingly obvious e.g. 'he'll really want to score today', 'they really won't want to lose today'
5. 'If it isn't a foul it must be a dive'
