I was there and we won 5-0. LC quarter finals and it was a really big deal back in 1981. Midweek night game. Must have been a very big gate that night. We had a fantastic young team and a class manager (Sexton). The future looked very bright.

The manager was Gordon Milne at the time and yes it was a cracking young team

Wow I was there remember that well.

Not sure where I heard this letsallsingtogether but pre kick-off in the 1981 away leg at Upton Park a family group from Coventry were threatened by some of East London's finest. You will remember it was that kind of night - 80s hooliganism at it's ugliest.

Two young black lads saw the Cov family being threatened by a mob, ran over, warned the ICF wannabes they'd better walk away and stood their ground. The East London crew went on the attack fists flying against our two lads. Not for long, 3 of West Ham's finest were literally sparked out on the pavement within seconds. The remaining mob from West Ham at that point disappeared. The Cov lads told the family to stay with them and they'd be ok.

The lads involved, Errol Christie (RIP - a super nice guy and a real Coventry hero) and his brother.........

I’m not sure where this Dabo MOTM is coming from. Must have watched a different player. he was ok but choked on my cornflakes see Dabo getting MOTM. Kelly was far better and I thought young mccallum played well too. Dabo gave the ball away a lot and got done a few times too down the wing

I said he was shit... more than happy to see him prove me wrong.

Same with Shipley, Biamou and Bakayoko. They prove me wrong, I’ll be first in line to admit I was wrong

Most violent match I’ve ever been to over 13000 at that West Ham game, massive following and stood toe to toe with the so called top boys of the ICF on their home turf took them by surprise I think, but the real villains were the old bill, legalised thugs, loads of Cov arrested and allowed the West Ham mob to do whatever. A group of about 200 got into our end but came unstuck getting trapped by a wall no where to escape and at the mercy of hundreds of angry pissed off Cov who had just watched us concede a last minute losing goal, yards off-side no cops anywhere near, locked inside the ground for what seemed an age. A lot of West Ham faces were let’s say rearranged that night.

Gave it away no more than mccallum. I suspect you just dont rate him and cant bring yourself to agree with the majority

Thought Dabo had his best game for us. Great run for the goal. He, like Jobello, is seemingly willing to cross from deep.

Godden looks okay in the air but I do worry he’ll be isolated up top on his own. I have no doubt he’ll get on the end of a few of the aforementioned crosses.

Robins made a point of pushing Shipley a lot higher in the second half. He had a long chat with him after he was taken off too. At least it looks like he is trying to address the limitations of the formation we’re playing.

Hiwula proved again he is a goal threat. Quite why Robins decided to take him off against Bolton I don’t know.

Wilson was very good with his feet. His career record tells us he was going to have errors in him.

I want going to comment, as it opens me up for examination, but Man of the Match was Jordi Hiwulla. I know because I was asked to give it. Dabo would've been my second choice, but Jordi edged it due to his two goals, plus Dabo and Jobello didnt click as well as I would've liked. A third goal for Jordi would've made my decision easier, Dabo had the better second half too, showed some great touches, although he was more visible as he was on our side of the pitch for the second half.

Kelly also had a great game, but got booked late on. Twice in three games now could start to be a worry. Sam McCallum did well, but had a tougher second half, I wondered if that was why Jordi wasnt so effective second half.

Rose went about his job well, Wilson was OK except for the goal, improvement needed from Hyam who gave the ball away too much, and Jobello.

Haven’t read thread as was at game and CBA now. Thought dabo was motm, certainly first half. Great run for the first goal. When was the last time a fullback took the ball the length of the pitch and set up a goal? Don’t get the hate at all.

Lots of positives tonight, albeit L2 opposition.

Poor crowd, but 1st round and in brum, so not unexpected. Bring on Watford. Been there three times and never seen us lose. Admittedly we weren’t 2 divisions below them, but still.

Hate to say it, but am enjoying playing at St Andrews*. Didn’t hear any negative stuff tonight (although 4-1, so...).

* would still prefer Cov obv, but hate the Ricoh even more these days.
Sterling ran the length, and stopped twice to consider his options, before putting it onto Chaplin's head, against Wycombe at home last year

I agree you must have been watching a different game.

He played better than Mccallum for sure. I see Dabo looks like being the new boo boy for some. Was he MOTM probably not but he was in the top 3.

Agree with all of this.

Would also add Dabo put in a great challenge for a 50:50!

Didn't see the game but have seen the highlights (really just the goals) this morning. It struck me how much space we had when driving forward - especially for Dabo's run. Any views on whether Exeter just weren't defending well in midfield or is this the start of the counter-attacking game starting to click?

I think Exeter were in all honesty very poor, but I think our passing did really help to open up the space as were were dragging them everywhere to open up those gaps. We weren't really counter-attacking it was a lot of possession based stuff last night.

He put in a couple but that flying one was probably the best one.

As well as hammering the ball off their player and having beef with their players throughout the game.

Yep, didn't get bullied which was nice to see. And tried to wind them up as much as he could!

Judging by his comments after Bolton I don’t think he would of bollocked them mate.

What a manager says in public and what he says in the dressing room are going to be very different. They’ll often defend them to the extreme in the press yet bollock them behind closed doors.

There were often times he found himself surrounded by 2/3 players and still found a way out, really impressive performance
