Great stop at the end and distribution is so much better but a couple times he should have claimed a ball

Tired way too quickly but looks like a tough combative player
McFadzean - 8
Couple balls that didn’t make it but constantly talking to everyone and organising. Maybe would have conceded without him.
Rose - 7
Great pick up, good pace to get back and make the tackle when their striker came through. Good competition at centre back.
Mason - 8
Getting better all the time, will be gutted when we sell him for a few mil in a couple years.
Westbrook - 7
Bayliss who? Lovely player and great goal
Shipley - 7
Never gives up and is improving playing he role he wants
Kelly - 8
Captain. Taking the yellow when he needed to and shepherding the ball out. How he got relegated from league 2 i’ll never know

Well once again this season its goals stopping us rising up the league, we currently sit in 7th place outside the play offs if only we had scored more goals

Marosi - 7 for the save. Looked comfortable on the ball, some will whine about the one or two iffy kicks but generally a step change in distribution and command from last season
Dabo - 6 Not a great game. Left his man a fair bit and first half looked like he’d get a nose bleed if he went past half way. Sure there’s more to come though.
McFadzean - 8 Very solid, always talking and organising. Got his head on everything. Will be a rock for us.
Rose - 7 Started shaky but grew into the game and looked a classy centre half.
Mason - 9 My MOTM. Was excellent defensively and driving forward. Linked well with Hiwula. Really like him. Also just become my daughters favourite player after one game.
Westbrooke - 8 Good goal, who need Tom Bayliss?
looks solid if not spectacular. Like a few of our CMs lacks a little bit of spark to make him stand out. Really like him as a player though.
Kelly - 7 Some iffy moments but generally a solid base for the team to play from. So important to how we play.
Shipley - 8 Good game, could’ve had a goal. Plays some excellent passes and uses the ball well. Could be a big season for him.
Jobello - 6 Didn’t see it today personally. Didn’t challenge for the ball, barely tracked back, never got going going forward. Hope there’s lots more to come from him otherwise we need some width pretty quick.
Baka - 8 Excellent game leading the line. Won lots in the air but often no one close enough to exploit it. Also hold men off really well.
Hiwula - 7 Did OK, should’ve had a goal. Not going to get you on the edge of your seat but works hard and is a goal threat.
Eccles - 7 Looked good. Not much time to shine but another solid if not spectacular CM coming through.

Marosi - 6 - Didn't have too much to do except for one fine save late on. Seemed decent enough at claiming the ball. Scared me a bit with how long he was holding onto the ball.
Dabo - 5 - Looked a bit off it and was targeted by Southend in the second half. Did make a few solid tackles though.
McFadzean - 7 - Really comfortable afternoon for him, and looked a very solid acquisition. Passes ranged from the sublime to the bizarre but he's going to get some ridiculous assists this season.
Rose - 6 - Did alright but had some weird communication errors where he went for the same ball as a team-mate.
Mason - 8 - One of his best games in a City shirt. Didn't give Southend's right winger a sniff all game.
Westbrooke - 6 - Didn't actually feel like he had as good as a game as most despite the goal. Was a bit slow with his passing and kept playing balls behind or to feet when Jobello or Hiwula clearly wanted it in front of them. Felt like his positioning was a bit off as well and Southend were finding a lot of space on his side towards the end of the second half. Still, an excellently taken goal and an overall solid game.

Shipley - 6 - Similar to Westbrooke in that his positioning and passing were a bit off but overall a good performance. Unlucky not to score early on.

I think we should be pretty encouraged?
Opening day win.
Good atmosphere.
McFad seems like a great addition.
Rose looks classy.
Mason delivering on his potential.
Westbrooke and Shipley stepping up.
Eccles looks like a player.
And to add to this:
Jamie Allen to return in a couple of weeks.
Expectations of an additional 3 new signings/loans to add to the firepower of the squad.
Max not too far away from full fitness
Looks like we have a solid base if we can get those 3 key signings through the door.

As much as people slated little luke Thomas he would have added dynamism and guile to that team and the left back would not have looked like Paulo Maldini.
We need players fast as that was a poor Southend team who could have easily taken a point in the end.
We need a No 10, centre Forward and a winger in the next few weeks. RB looks a downgrade on Sterling atm but in fairness sterling started out pretty average too.
Great to see so many fans there today and I hope they all come back with a +1 If possible!!

Marisa 7 Good save at end distribution not too bad
Dabo 5 struggled 2nd half. Didn’t help that most of the time he had 2 players to mark as their left back was allowed to go where he wanted.
McFadzean 7 good solid performance looks like a really good signing.
Rose 6 communication poor in a couple of occasions has a decent turn of speed. Grew in confidence as game went on.
Mason 8 is this the same player as last year? Really impressed with his improvements in distribution strength and general reading of the game MoM

Kelly, 8 - a v good leader for us and keeps the midfield ticking and always disrupts the opposition attacks

Mistakes in the last 10mins almost cost dear but should have changed the right hand side sooner.Jordy swapped to the right but should have really took Baka off last 10mins to shore up the midfield

Bit surprised by the 4s and 5s being given to Jobello, considering it's his first game in English football I thought he done ok - kept it simple when needed and good control. Ok we all wanted to see him do what he done in pre season rinse the full back and deliver quality but it wernt to be today. Think he will be a big player for us for this season once he gets going
