When was the last time an England team won a semi final in a major sport? the last one I can think of was in the 2003 Rugby World cup, is there a more recent one?

Lost in the 2007 Final as holders. Also won the World T20 in 2010.

Golf and Tennis aren't great as an anology because they're individual sports, but look at people like Rose or Murray, who kicked on after finally winning a major tournament. Getting across the line is a big thing even if you have the talent. I don't think it's choking but more of a mindset. People were ready to blame Klopp if Liverpool lost the final as he's lost 6 finals before. I guess in reality at the business end of a tournament is where you expect the stronger teams to be and you need that bit of luck or wrong decision etc that may make the difference in teams of similar ability and the longer these things continue to happen, the more you pick up on it.
Take the women last week. A goal that in any other tournament would have been given, but the one we have VAR it was a cigarette paper offside - ultimately the correct decision, unlucky timing, followed by a woeful penalty.
It will change - we've now won a couple of penalty shoot-outs in a row, when we couldn't win one of those for years.

Level is onside
to me - that is level to the naked eye and should not be overturned - I think offside should be like LBW in cricket - where not all hawkeye decisions are overturned if all things not aligned

Ultimately if they’ve taken the time to send it to VAR and they see it’s an inch offside they might as well give it as offside. What if it’s an inch onside? Should that be given as offside? It works both ways.

Not all Hawkeye is overturned because the ball tracker is taking an assumed path. Therefore you give benefit of the doubt to the umpire
With VAR - you are either offside or you are not. Whether that’s by a foot or not

Hawkeye tracks the ball, it isn't down to the human eye looking at a picture. For VAR to be that accurate you'd have to be 100% certain the camera was dead in line. Otherwise issues with the parallax view come in to play.
This is ice hockey but it will give you an idea of the problem.
