What proven goal scorer would you get for the same money?

That's the problem, could you get a proven goal scorer for £700,000?

Ill offer to drive him to Barnsey for £700,000. The teM only started to score goals once he was dropped. Missed more sitters than anyone else and provided little else to the team.

TKe the money and put a cheeky bid in for mcnulty

We didn't start to score goals all season, that was our downfall

reinvest in what though?
Another young player with potential? How long do we give him?

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you but if the model is to buy young players to develop and then move them on what is the criteria for letting them go?
If we have faith in our scouting and coaching then are we really maximising our return making 200 grand profit?
Of course if there is any truth to this maybe the player may decide he wants to go and take it our of our hands.
I think the issue with Chaplin is that he just didn’t fit the way that MR wanted to play, which was surprising given the lengths we went to to get him in.
Much of last seasons recruitment was very poor, Chaplin, Bosma, Ogogo, Brown, Allissani, and Baka, failed to deliver on the high hopes we had for them,
Although a couple still have time to impress.
But it does make you wonder who was in charge of recruitment and had they ever had a chat with the manager.

No one had high hopes of Baka

I can see potential in him but not sure he is right for our system.

I'm not fussed either way. We do need a 20+ goal a season striker.

I suspect “some” money has already been ring fenced for another forward given we are making reasonably good signings for a play off push. No doubt this is based on a player or two going out for a fair whack. So wouldn’t be surprised if this deal goes ahead. In terms of the player, I do think he will come good and would like to keep him but as has been repeated several times he would seem to suit a 4-4-2 based on what we have seen. Not sure Robins will go down that route. Moreover, his head would be turned by this bid and the only way I could see us convincing him to stay would be to promise a starting place. Can’t see that happening.

My main issue with Chaplin is that we don’t play to his strengths. Is there any point in keeping him if we don’t? I’d like to keep him but £700k seems like decent business to me.
That's the thing, if we plan to play 442 then keep him.

Word has it from Ryton he is a really good finisher. I wouldn't mind either way. I think there is a lot to come from him, but I don't think he is quite ready yet

Seen a clip the club posted on twitter saying ‘touch’. Was a kinda scorpion kick flick on. But no defender so easily done really.

Reminded me of the ‘McDonald scores a hat trick......in training’ thing :emoji_joy:

Readings asking price is stupid for McNulty. They pretty much want their money back. Can’t see it happening.

Marquis is someone we can get.

Did they pay the full transfer fee or would we still be due some instalments if so maybe we could do l deal?

I think you could get eves for less than that and marques for around that , and if the two new wingers are as good as we are all hopeing then either could get 20 goals, I know we get excited by every new signing but I am looking forward to the new season , especially if we can get bright + that elusive striker. Fair play to joy for backing MR , maybe they know something's going to happen re Calum Wilson and trying to get a few in before the prices rise?

If they’re starting at 700k, I’d hold out for about £1m.

He’s young, got potential and under contract. It’d be stupid to sell right away.

They didn’t pay the full lot. But transfer between clubs is pretty much structured like that.

Eaves is on a free as he is now out of contract. Marques has another year left, also Sunderland are trying to sign him.

With the 4-4-2 that would probably suit him more - couldn't Hiwula probably next to Max as well? And although I know some will slate me for this, but Ponti is a very good finisher if that's all we're looking for, plus he's taller and stronger.

Would all of any fee be available to the manager ? MR has stated publically he has two forward players very firmly on his radar and he has also said he needs to ship one or two out. If Bright is one he’s after I’m assuming the other is a striker which imo we need but would the sale of Chaplin mean we would need a second striker ? Personally I’d like to see Chaplin stay think he has real potential but having said that we were at our best at the latter end of last season when he was out the side. Decisions, decisions who would be a manager ?
We don’t need more strikers we need better strikers. If selling Chaplin helps us get a good one in, I’m all for it. Not to mention bright.

Theres a tweet the Peterborough chairman Darragh McAnthony has put out with Marquis in La Manga. McAnthony implies Marquis might be going to the Championship.

The team only started to score goals because Bright came in, not because Chaplin was dropped. It's a subtle difference - he made that entire formation work, rather than one player being the downfall for it. And Chaplin didn't miss more sitters than Thomas, who should have scored 25 goals last season, albeit many of the chances were self-made.

Agreed on that. I'd put his price at £1.5m given age and length of contract. Meet in the middle. Good deal all round.

Give him a month alongside Max and I think he’ll shine

Max has been out for a very long time and isn't proven in League One. even when playing he scored 5 in 44 league games. Not convinced that Max and Chaplin are the dream team.

Take the money, add in a % clause for next transfer and invest in a prove league one scorer. If Luton are interested, £750k and James Collins will do
