What is going on with the Tory leadership contest? (1 Viewer)

On the other hand, why do the BBC or any other channel have to provide coverage of what is a private election which 99%+ of the population have no say in.

I think I read somewhere that 0.04% of the population is about to choose who our next PM is going to be and ultimately what brexit does exactly mean.

And this is the mentality of those making that decision Tories happy to trash economy, lose Scotland and Northern Ireland, and destroy own party to get Brexit

Why do people think Prime Ministers are elected on a presidential basis?

Why not? It was a valid point to the post I was replying to. I would have thought that was obvious.

Not really no as that’s more than elected the last labour prime minister and until recently the conservatives would have just appointed via MPs

You clearly missed it. FP pointed out that 99+% of the population won’t have a say on who the next PM is. I replied it’s 0.04% of the population, hands up I’m actually wrong. Having just re-read said article again it’s more, it’s 0.19% of the population. It wasn’t even my point it’s FP’s I was merely adding context to the point he was making. If you have an issue with the point that was made I suggest that you take it up with the person who made it, ie not me.

The difference is that this election is almost like a general election in a single party state. Each leader setting out a manifesto yet nobody really gets to vote on it.

Just been announced that Javid is out.

Gove moves into second and apparently 2 papers were spoilt. Mmmm more resignations from the Tory Party on route maybe? Two at least aren’t happy.

The whole democratic system does seem to be a joke at times.

In elections you get maybe just over half the eligible people to vote (so plenty that aren't eligible aren't included in figures)
You'll get maybe a third to 4/10 of those that do vote voting for the party that gain power
The leader of the party (and therefore PM) will probably get just over half of votes in their consituency, and they're chosen for leader by a very small number of people of party members etc.

Well if you want others to understand it...it would make sense

The reason Boris didn't take part in the first debate wasn't because he was getting picked on.
Let me know which bit you're struggling with and I'll explain it to you

That's unlikely to change unless you make voting mandatory. Maybe that would be the way forward, providing you offer a 'none of the above' option.

So we're down to Boris, Gove and Hunt......it's like being asked if you'd prefer a kick in the bollocks or a punch in the head.

We've finished scraping the barrel, have gone through the bottom of it and are now seeing how deep beneath it we can go

Agree entirely - there's need to be an option of a 'protest' vote on the ballots.

Only because they is a televised debate which there shouldn’t be its just an internal leadership contest

Whole thing has made us look like a banana republic. Basically a fake contest so it doesn’t look like a coronation, down to the winner allegedly hand picking his opponent.

This country continues its descent from world power to laughing stock.

I wasn't struggling with that. You seemed to suggest I was though. I was actually explaining my understanding of SBGs reasoning.

Wankers both
At least come the general election there is a clear choice between a left-leaning Labour wanker or a right-leaning Tory wanker. Voters just need to think about which hand they use...likely they have a natural lean to the opposite side.
All the others are impotent anyway.

I just want one person to vote for who I’m not certain would die if it wasn’t for the “do not drink” label on bleach.

Jesus, we get to pick between two idiots who have had life handed to them on a platter and never done a days work in their life. Make that three idiots actually now BXP are in play.

Left/Right I couldn’t care less right now. I’d have voted Tory for the first time ever if they’d elected Stewart I’m that desperate for a rational human being.

They’re really testing my commitment to never vote Lib Dem again.

I dont know who the bloke is who walked that protester out by her neck but he should have stuck a DDT on her or powerslammed her through a table.

Not for political reasons by the way, just for the comedy value.

I'm not sure banana republic is quite fair - maybe mango? Everyone knew it was going to be Boris but after May won by default last time it had to have the look of a choice. But there is that feeling of "you can vote, as long as you vote the way we want you to".

'None of the above'. Right I'll put my X in that box then?

Yes - it's a proper protest vote that would get recorded as such - it's a true voice of dissatisfaction.

Spoiled ballots never give specifics as to how or why the were spoiled - it could just be someone filling it in wrong or someone scrawling WANKERS over the entire paper. Plus there are people who've intended to spoil their ballot and had it counted as a vote for someone. There was a story a few weeks ago about someone drawing two penises in two candidates boxes. It was decided that one was more flaccid than the other so it was counted as a vote for the person they'd drawn the erect penis in. That's making a lot of assumptions.

It'd be far more effective with compulsory voting, but I'd add it onto ballot papers now (although I'm sure some wit would start a "none of the above" party.
