Going to write an article on Speedie for a football magazine. One of my favourite ever City players. Any stories or memories of the fiery player ?

My favourite Speedo story whilst at Coventry was regarding Oggy.

At the end of the session it was keeper practice (didn't have dedicated GK coach back then). As we all know Speedo loved to chip keepers, but he'd been warned that this wasn't his time but was for Oggy … so he chipped him. Oggy threatened him not to do it again, guess what :) … the next thing he was chasing him around Ryton trying to kick lumps out of him!

That's what I'm after as that was typical of Speedie. I once saw him and Benno in the Rose and Crown pub by the Forum.Benno was on crutches while Speedie was shouting loudly in the bar. I heard he liked a drink !

Well, if he was shouting loudly, i'm not surprised you heard him say that... ;)

Remember as a kid being on hols in France when back page headlines suddenly announced we were signing Speedie. I couldn't believe it. Shopping at Harrods we were . He had a stinker in Charity Shield but hit the ground running in first game v Spurs at HR after cup win. Took the piss out of Mabbutt. My fave ever player when I was an impressionable teenager. His legendary chips were exquisite but he was amazing in the air too for a wee fella. Passionate player as the Sunderland, Gary Bennett fracas at Roker park demonstrated. Recall him scaling the fences in West terrace after one goal. Also remember him completely taking out Tony Daley on touchline at Villa Park when he was running rings round us one year. I was in Villa end and he got dogs loads of abuse and he just laughed and stared them all out. Total legend while it lasted but think read here on SBT he ended up as disruptive in changing room towards the end of his time at City. Made front page headlines of red tops after a fight with one of directors in players lounge I think. Allegedly gone a bit weird later in life. Heard he has turned out to be a bit UKIPpy/ xenophobic... I hate that with sporting heroes aka Botham and Faldo! Post a link to the article on here will ya. Good luck.

He used to do it in every warm up before the game kicked off. Oggy hated it but week in week out he did it. He’s one of the players that makes me feel sorry for the kids of today as they’d missed out on him. He was a great player for us.

I've always wondered why you never see keepers getting chipped any more the way Speedie always used to chip them?

Are they just bigger nowadays? Is there positioning better?
He used to do it frequently.

My dad recalled playing league pool against him (at one of the Social clubs in Foleshill) and he was indeed smashed.
Footballers back then and before would often drink in local pubs and clubs. My dad told me Bill Glazier was a heavy drinker, and before him Arthur Lightening liked a good drink, sometimes the night before games. I often saw George Hudson with other ex City players in the Mount Pleasant pub in Walsgrave downing copious amounts, but they were all long retired !

I hadn't thought about it before, but that's a fair point as it does seem to have drifted from the game. I can only assume it's to do with starting area and being drilled to be more positionally aware rather than strikers not having the ability to do it. Perhaps we're blinded by hindsight and the safe pass or % run rather than easily offering up possession is taught now. Not sure you'd ever stop a maverick like Speedo from having a go though.

I've sent my article off to Late Tackle magazine. The editor has a read of articles and if he likes them they go in the next issue. I've done another piece on the 1960 European Cup Final; Real Madrid 7 Eintracht Frankfurt 3. Rated best ever club performance and best ever final.

A great player indeed soured by his recent performance In Coventry at the Jag club with Keith Houchen. Speedie was very over the top and shall we say “not very politically correct”. There were a few in the room who were very out off/upset by it, but I guess that’s old school footballers and a very different era. A different contrast with Houchen who very much knew how to behave.

Adge did speedie say he was suing the Pfa that night ?

I seem to remember he dropped the c bomb about Souness too

Yes, can’t remember what that was about though and you’re right, he didn’t hold back about Souness or Gary Bennett.
