We stayed between Almafi and Positano when we went. Beautiful place ! Positano is simply beautiful at night,

Spend a day down the beach at Furore beach the bridge is amazing and it’s a little sun trap in the day a bit stoney so take a chair if got one or a couple of towels ! Also a few rocks to jump off about 20ft on the right hand side. Unless you’re a red bull diver he jumped from the bridge ! We went to Capari for a day tour also which was good ! I wouldn’t bother with the blue lagoon caves though, we spent 2 hours on a boat waiting to go in until we asked to get off as my girlfriend was so sea sick from waiting. They told us be back within an hour ! So be careful with that one!

Peroni 660ml bottles are around 2 Euro’s in the shops we had a pizza one night and few bottle and sat and watch the sun set in Positano was a cheap nice date !!

Almafi Centre is nice for a day but very busy ! Get the buses if not hiring a car they go all over and around 3 euros return ! Although they do get very busy so be prepared to stand.

I'm going there this summer and want to put together a bit of an itinerary rather than the usual laze about by the pool kind of holiday.

Will do the usual Pompeii, Vesuvius etc but are there any less obvious things you'd recommend?

There's a theatre there where they do "operetta's". Beautiful place, and great fun.

Capri of course, but it's very busy in the centre

Make sure one of your trips goes down the amalfi cost road. Spectacular and frightening at times.

Positano is great, but something to know is that there is a bus to take you from top to bottom. It's very steep walking otherwise. We got the local bus there, and then boat back to Sorrento.

Don't drive if you can avoid it!

But do head for the Temples of Paestum

Went two years ago, stayed in Marina Grande which was lovely but a steep walk into the main town. Loved Capri and had a boat tour of the Amalfi coast but one thing I'd recommend is visiting Herculaneum rather than Pompeii.

Also if you go to Capri try to do the trip where you leave later at night, the majority of tourists clear out in late afternoon

We spent some of our honeymoon in Naples and two places I'd have liked to visit if we'd had more time were Baia and Solfatara. The first is a sunken city and the second is a volcanic crater (pretty standard honeymoon activities). As we went to neither I can't say for sure they'll be worthwhile, they just looked really interesting to me so might be worth looking at. Whilst in Naples we visited the Bourbon Tunnels which were good in spite of the lack of chocolate biscuits.

Have a drink or meal in the Foreigners club in Sorrento, great views!

Went to sorrento to a couple of years ago.

Stayed sc. but have. Been to Hotel La Solara in the past. Out of town but shuttle bus is good.

Pompeii has opened up some more villas and they are high quality. AIm to get there at opening time and take water...maybe sandwiches as well. Stifling heat.

Herculaneum is also definitely worth a visit. Train is good. Don’t take a taxi at ercolano. It is only 300 yards away from the station. Take the train from Sorrento. Cheap.

Also Amalfi coast coach (run by a private company) from the town.. about 6 euros

Trip into Naples and the museum is good.

I drove a few years ago. It is like being in a video game....there is a town called Angri. Very apt when your son says he wants to go to the toilet whilst driving on the auto Strada.

It’s boiling here in Italy at the moment. Been 35c everyday here for the last couple of weeks.

As for the Americans, I think Italy is going to be one of the ‘must visit’ destinations for them in Europe. Saying that though, Verona is full of British people at the moment.

Disagree slightly - one of the best costal driving roads in the world along the Almalfi coast. Spectacular

Best thing I'm told about it is no plantation and therefore no mosquitos - you can leave windows open at night with no fear of being bitten

I noticed quite a few English in Verona.... particularly in the bars around Hellas....

The Americans always seemed to be headed towards Venice....

Actually apart from Verona, I can’t remember noticing any English anywhere (although it was October last time I went, despite the very “Mediterranean” temperatures in Genoa).

Sorrento is the most expensive resort in Europe.

They opened up a lot of flights from the UK to Verona over the last 10 years, now in the summer it seems there are English everywhere. In my experience most of them head to Tuscany but Italy hasn’t had the same level of Brits heading there on holidays but it’s changing I think. You do get less south of Napoli apart from Sorrento.

It’s a fantastic country to live with a great quality of life, if you can ignore the craziness of it all!

I heard it on radio 2 last week. They also said sunny beach in Bulgaria was the cheapest. I went there in the late 1980s and it was a hell hole.

yes, lots of people have. You can tell by all the roads and houses that are there.

Thanks for all the recommendations guys. I'm currently sat in Napoli International with my flight being delayed until around half past midnight.

Did most of the recommendations including:

- Capri
- Positano
- Operetta (great fun)
- Mount Vesuvius
- Herculaneum

It's been a very busy 7 days and I have no idea how you do Italy unless you've got some fitness, I am absolutely exhausted! My health app on my phone has me clocking up almost 10 miles on a couple of days. Had an amazing time and would love to come back and stay further around the Amalfi coast next time.

One thing which also surprised me is the amount of Americans here in Italy, I hear their accents more than I do anyone else, they really have a fascination with the place.

Stayed near Positano a couple of years ago. Absolutely stunning. I think about the view regularly. Pompeii trip is fascinating, isn’t it?
