Never really went to the pub much anyway.

When you tell people that you do drink and haven’t for years they look at you like you must be a recovering alcoholic rather than somebody who just decided to give up.

My mates wife gave up and when we were out and I was talking to her I used to be thinking watch what shit you come out with because everyone else will forget but she won't,!
Have been toying with the idea myself. Probably only drink once a week but often get absolutely battered, (normally on a Saturday), then Sunday is a write off so it has basically taken over the whole weekend

I used to be in pubs most nights, but slowly reduced it down. I like a good drink on a football day, but can go 3 or 4 weeks without a drink and don't even give it a thought. I know some who can have 2 pints and that's it, but I wouldn't bother going in the pub for that.

Think my Saturdays are a bit of a novelty at the moment.
Weekends revolved around the kids for years and now there doing their own thing I'm back to having freedom I haven't had for years, problem is I'm far more susceptible to raging hangovers than I was years ago!

Last home game of the season recently had a good drink with my mates before and after the match. Felt like shit the next day, in fact took 2 days to feel better. Signs of getting older !

I went out a few months back and was driving. I'd had the fizzy drinks and bottles of water so I thought I'd mix it up and ask for a pint of milk at the bar at about midnight.

That got some looks.

I gave up drinking some time ago - wasn't difficult for me, especially as when I opened a can or bottle and started drinking it I felt like I didn't want it anymore.

Add to that I have no friends (seriously), haven't been to a pub in 30 odd years (and I'm only 48) and never socialise (I'm sure the first part of this sentence shows this) I had no problems

Would love to be able to go tee total, but the fact is I love a drink. Spend all day grafting knowing a couple of bottles of rose await me when I get back.

My problem is that I could quite happily start drinking from the moment i wake up in the morning , in the week I don’t because I have to drive myself and others to work but can’t wait to get home for a glass of wine.

I actually dread weekends because when I get up and don’t have anything to do I drink coffee for aslong as I can before I invariably crack open the first bottle. It’s a bloody nightmare having to live inside my head and battle that!

Anyone who is tee total I have the upmost respect for, although being an ex publican it used to piss me off when someone came to the pub and asked for a coffee or lime and soda I must admit...

In the 80's me and 2 mates would be in the pub every night, first in and last out.
I got up for work some mornings with a hangover but worked it off. We carried on like that for years, but gradually eased up until it was just weekends. That would kill me now, and to be honest I don't miss it at all. I became a good pool player though, no wonder as I played every night ! My then missus stopped me taking the dog out at night as I would end up finding a dog friendly pub, and returning 4 hours later !

How does it affect your social life when you give up? Do you still go out to the pub?
Do people look at you suspiciously?!

I haven’t drink alcohol since 1983. No real reason, not a recovering alcoholic, not religious just don’t do it.

I tend not to tell people as they often think I’m moe interesting than I really am (see above) or that I’m judging them. In fact if you don’t tell people you’ll often find that folks will assume that you’re as drunk as your friends are.

I very rarely drink at home, no matter how hot is it outside or how difficult a day it’s been, however I do enjoy a good social with friends, be it the lads or other couples. I’d say I probably drink most weekends, usually only a couple in the pub on a Friday and/or Saturday. As it isn’t a heavy one, I make sure I go for a run the following morning. It makes me feel better physically and mentally, removes any potential hangover and any guilt for drinking calorie heavy ale!

Once every few weeks there always a heavy afternoon session with friends and that takes me days to get over. However unless it’s a 4/5am session, I still force myself to get up and do something the following day so I haven’t wasted the day. Most people get ‘beer fear’ to varying degrees and while that’s natural, that or a hangover is worth it to me as there’s nothing better than spending time with friends.

I’m especially trying to cram a few longer socials in over the next few months as my partner is expecting, so I know once the baby arrives there’s no chance I’m out for a while!
