Why do we even bother these days ?! We seem to be universally hated by all, us and the Germans anyway !

I'll never be able to fully watch it without getting pissed off at Sweden. I ended up at a party over there a few years ago when they won it. They take it overly serious and are generally quite arrogant about it.

The UK always finish near the bottom regardless of performance and Sweden always finish near the top regardless of theirs.

The massive gap between the jury votes and the public tell you all you need to know. I think there is desperate need to change the system!

It’s wrong, time to change this dated, political contest

We’re only wanted by most of Europe if they need NHS, benefits or a charity to raise money for a disaster

I don't get the hostility, the Eastern Europeans can't get here quick enough for our jobs, NHS, benefits, comparatively comfortable and safe country but do they actually like us ?! It's the same though generally for the French and Germans. Thing is these nations contribute most of the cash don't they to produce it !? It's time to either de- politicise it or pull out !

I though our song was a bit better than last few years but we seemed to have put the least effort into staging/ production of it compared with everyone else, and based on that can’t argue too much with getting no votes

Also our recent efforts are so middle of the road X factor pop stuff, should either send a novelty act , or something different , bit of dizzee rascal style stuff. Seemingly a lot of act are massive in Europe’s or in their own country, basically even no one in uk has a clue who our entries are recently.

I’d give a James Bond theme one year, big bond theme with big name singing, and amazing visuals / production

Should definitely treat the thing like the joke it is and send novelty acts or go for the 'oppressed minority' thing - guilt them into "if you don't vote for this you're racist/sexist/homophobic etc".

I want our entry to be Brexit in a song - mash up of Blue doing "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word" and "Fuck EU I Won't Do What You Tell Me"

Or Shakespeares Sister "Stay"

I can’t say because I don’t watch it, but we’re not the shittest year on year on year.

I think we hit top ten a few years back with Blue, but the songs that do well tend to be proper pop songs that top the charts across the continent a lot of the time whereas we sent a guy who won that BBC show nobody watches to sing a song nobody wanted. There's an obvious voting thing with neighbours giving each other points, but it's kitschy nonsense that we take about as seriously as we should which is the main appeal for me.

Every year the sensible people must be praying for a defeat as hosting it would be a pain in the arse

We take it too seriously. We should either go all out ludicrous, or pick a proper singer or band yo do proper pop (like wot we're actually good at) and stop trying to impersonate mediocre Eurovision failures from 30 years ago.

Is it only over here that Eurovision has seemingly become the preserve of the gay male, or is that prevalent across the whole continent and beyond? It's clearly why Australia are in in, for example, but i can't see all the former Soviet states jumping on the gay bandwagon, so we wouldn't even be guaranteed widespread popularity if we went totally for the gay vote.

I'd get Olly Murs on it. Either his popularity and credentials are a success for us or we get to see Olly Murs trying to smile through gritted teeth at a 23rd place finish. Win-win!

It has become an excuse for weird eccentrics to have a bash at the expense of others really imo. Countries like the UK are major contributors (i.e. buy entry) to the running so haven't to go through the qualifying.

As for differences...some is definitely down to neighbour's influence over each other's cultures & tastes...music being no exception.

What I would like to see is all entries to be secret until the actual event. Then 100 representative members of the public stuck in a room & csting votes to anonymous songs (ok the language might give it away, but hey ho can't have it all). Wonder if that would correlate with the main event's voting pattern? Given the continental thirst for our popsters - I suspect we would fare much better.

Look earlier in the thread.

Just skimmed back, and I think he's got a point to be fair.

The UK is one of the most flocked to countries in Europe, if not the most. Yet the sentiment towards us is very negative.

I get that a lot of brits bring it on themselves by being ignorant towards other countries, being shit at languages etc, but Eurovision demonstrates for me that negative sentiment that we get.

No way we deserved to be bottom last night, and Brexit doesn't really come into it either. This has been going on since well before 2016.

What & kill their budding careers off???

I think UK-wise Brotherhood Of Man were the last entrants that went on to be successful. We tried one or two that were already famous, tried rocky, raunchy & sentimental stuff...none of it works. We might as well pull-out as the europeans do weird eccentricity far better than us at that level.

And how long have Israel, Russia & Australia been part of the continent of Europe?

Don’t think the sentiment towards the UK is negative at all, but I guess it’s a good opportunity for a rant about Eastern Europeans ffs.

How is Eurovision an accurate representation of attitudes towards certain countries?!
