Holidays 2019 where are you all going (1 Viewer)

Spent approx. 13 of my first 15 years doing holidays on the IOW. Got to know the place like the back of my hand and have so many great memories. Took my wife (before son was born) over there and booked us into a naff self catering place, it rained all the time and she burst into tears in the car as it it teemed it down in Ventnor. Haven't been back since, but she recently mentioned the possibility of revisiting with our son (didn't see that coming!)
Only time I went before, I was about 12, it poured with rain all week (it was August) and it turned out I was seriously ill.

So I figured I needed to go back!

Love Brixham, go there multiple times each year. I suppose as my parents live there it helps

Devon’s a brilliant area of the country. If the weather’s good there’s nowhere I’d rather be in the world.

I think we spoke about this before but Motehoe just up the road from Woolacombe. Took the missus a couple of years ago and we went to the beach but obviously it was about 12c and raining in August.

Off back down to the Isle of Wight in just under two weeks time. Only going for a long week-end on an invite from a close friend of ours who will be putting us up. It'll be nice to have a look around the old place and visit a few other friends of ours. Don't normally get away much but we're looking at renting a cottage sometime in September. Don't even know where yet!

Once spent some time at the lovely beach in Strete. There are some beaches in Devon that rival anything anywhere in the world. Like you say, the weather is always the unreliable factor.

Isle of Wight!

Did Skye last year, so may as well compare and contrast islands.
Whereabouts on the island? I lived in Newport for 6 years and before that 2 years in Totland Bay (West Wight). Reckon I could drive around that island blind folded! If you want any tips, pm me. :)

New York for 10 days at the start of August.

Prague for a weekend in September which will mostly be spent drinking beer.

I did the whole all inclusive beach holiday last year in Mexico so fancy some cities this time around.

Am pretty close to one of the places you lived then, as am staying around the Totland / Freshwater area. particular tips would be places to eat I reckon, from decent chip shops to decent pubs, so expect a PM imminently ;)

Turkey (Altinkum) for 2 weeks in September incorporating a weekend in Istanbul. The football season will have started then so hoping that Besiktas have a home fixture so I can attend.

It’s like going into a time tunnel - take some flared trousers and a kipper tie

Not been on holiday for 2 years and nothing planned. Thinking of a trip to oceland and blue lagoon. Anyone been? Worth it?
Went a couple of years ago in January !!! Bloody freezing but stunning place, Blue Lagoon is great fun - swim up bar in the snow but lovely warm water. Also tried a local swimming pool with boiling plunge pools. Bonus if you get to see the northern lights of course.

But it is bloody expensive so if you can go self catering and take some stuff with you.

Which hotel was that? We like Cuba and have been there a few times. If we go again I'd like to know which hotel to avoid!
Went to Cuba a good few years ago now and drove down the whole island from Havana to Santiago de Havana really good road trip but very conscious of the poverty around. Watching a guy tell us his petrol is not watered down by proceeding to light it was a unique experience. Some of the nicest people I've ever met on my travels.

Myself, went to Fuerteventura earlier in the year and now planning a trip to India for November, might get a quick trip to Turkey or Egypt for a spot of diving before then or might do the Farnes

Has anybody been to Mexico? Me and the Mrs planning to go next year. We’re a quiet couple, partial to the odd drink once in a while but not big on the partying scene. Any recommendations?

So you're basically suggesting I pack my wardrobe then.
Ignore Grendel. He's a first class twat. If the island was so backward, why would the Festival be there every year? Grendel doesn't like me because he knows I've blocked him for about a year! I sometimes allow myself a sneaky peek at his boring posts! ;)

I lived in Freshwater for 10 years. The Red Lion pub in Freshwater is really nice. From there you can walk along the river Yar to yarmouth harbour. Really nice if the weather is good.
Obviously that side of the island is the Needles. The open top bus to the Needles old battery is worth a trip. Dont do it if you're scared of heights though.

Freshwater bay to Compton Bay is a great drive with amazing views. Compton is a lovely unspoiled beach.

It is a little backward though haha

A couple of years ago we were in Playa Del Carmen. It's not too far from the party area of Cancuun but far enough away to keep away from it if you want to. We stayed in the Riviera Grand Princess. HUGE hotel. If you get the chance to do any of the ruins do Coba. It's the last one where you can climb up to the top of the pyramid. Some view from up there!

You’ll love NYC mate. Went last March and caught the bug immediately, going again in July. Can’t wait!
I lived there for over 20 years, just curious what do you like about it?

I hated it. Went in July many years ago now. Far too hot which was exacerbated by the concrete jungle nature of it.

Stayed just across the road from Port Authority Bus Terminal. Distrikt Hotel it’s called. I love the tall buildings, all the famous things, the filthy food. Love Times Square. Visited a few of the locations from The Warriors. It’s strange but I find it fascinating how it’s buzzing all night, but I’m not a big fan of overwhelming crowds, it’s a weird one. Will be doing different things this time round as opposed to the beginners’ sight seeing: One Trade, Empire State, Lady Liberty etc.

Yeah there’s a big split. I’ve heard many people say they don’t like it. To each their own. Would like to get further west of the country at some point in my life.

I've never wanted to go to the US. It's just never appealed to me. Same as Australia. It holds absolutely nothing for me. I'd rather go to Canada or New Zealand. Never fancied anywhere in Africa either. Always a couple of countries at war with each other or facing some sort of political upheaval. Sod that!

love the place, doubt I'll ever go again though, too many other places I've never visited and not enough time or cash to do everything.
