If he leaves he's well within his rights to and I bear no animosity to him for doing so if he's playing at a higher level on a higher wage. He's been here a good while and done his best and played out of position and through injury at times. For him it's probably now or never given his age and while he could think about staying here and becoming a bit of a club 'legend' (term used quite loosely) he also knows if he gets injured or someone better is brought in the club wouldn't think twice about releasing him.
I think he's replaceable (esp. as he seems to always be carrying a knock) and I've no idea if he's got what it takes to play Championship level - another 2-3 years he could well end up released and looking for another club but if he can earn in that time what it take him 6-7 years to earn here it's given him that bit more security.
Although taking up Davies' option suggests to me that MR is planning for him leaving nothing has been confirmed yet though.

At least he's not going to rival in league 1 or being big headed and aiming for a premier league team.

If the club bins him off at 18 the cost is on them, not him. The £600k a year on the academy isn't insignificant

He's been injured. Is he entitled not only to sign contracts somewhere else but to a guaranteed place in the first 11?

I’ve no big issue if he leave and not surprised he’s exercising his right to move on a free for the first time in his career, that’s football in the modern game so I’ll not beat him about loyalty.
I’d rather know now as the gaffer before I sit down with all my players in the next week or two to say who’s being retained or released.
Be nice to retain him for his pace but I’d rather a more physically imposing taller type with a similar skill set to Willis to help eradicate a few of the set piece frailties we’ve seen this year. The lack of height in the sides a issue.

I will be sorry to see him go. I think he has improved year on year and has always seemed an honest and level headed player. He also gave me one of my best footballing moments when he scored that goal last May.

He's got to pass his medical yet. Let's not forget that recurring knee injury. Maybe this was the reason he didn't leave last season when the Rotherham link was widely reported. I heard that Bristol City was his preferred destination but Luton seem to have come up trumps. Best of luck to him and hope it works out as he's been a good servant to his hometown club.

I agree about his pace being key and therefore both Hyam and Davies better with him, but they're certainly not too similar. All 3 have different top attributes and if we could clone them we'd make a world class defender. Imo Willis has pace to burn such a valuable asset at this level, Hyam is more composed on the ball (reminds me a bit of Gary Gillespie or Phil Babb) whereas Davies will stick his head in, put his body in the way anything just good old fashioned defending, but passing sometimes lets him down and both lack a bit of pace.

Agreed. Think he was overrated. I think we've looked much better the last few games with a Hyam/Davies partnership.
I've heard that Davies and Robins don't get on, but is that just because Davies isn't getting game time? If so, then maybe he'll be happy to stay on with garunteed game time. I'd much rather keep Davies over Willis in all honesty.

Bit of a cliche isn't it? Fans will literally say that about every star player who leaves their club. I believe the same was said about McNulty when he departed to Reading, yet fans were desperate for him to come back in January due to our struggles in front of goal. Willis has been excellent for us, especially over the past two seasons and is now arguably one of the best CB's in the division. Hopefully we can replace him or someone steps up, but it's of my opinion that we'll miss him.
Puzzles me why some fans still take it so personally when a player leaves for pastures new, despite the fact that they're usually offered vastly improved terms at their new club. Plus, they also don't have to ignore elephants in the room such as their own club being under threat of becoming homeless season after season. Employees leaving for better pay etc. happens in every single industry, not sure why footballers are scathed for making a decision any normal human being would. I actually find the thought process rather childish to be honest. That's not necessarily directed at you by the way. A particular collection of posters on this thread do sound bitter beyond belief though. I mean it's not like he scored a crucial goal in the Play-Off Final or remained with us in the lowest division in the EFL despite receiving Championship interest only 6 months before, or anything.

Long term, I think Morgan Williams will replace Willis. I was very impressed with him against Fleetwood.
He is only 19 and if he gets a successful loan next year, I think we will have a real player on our hands.

I agree, it is a childish attitude. I don’t want him to leave, but he deserves a crack at a higher league and I’m not going to stick my bottom lip out over it and cross my arms.

Graeme Jones had agreed to become their new manager back in February, so I guess he has already drawn up a list of potential targets.
He has been at the club for 14 years i would of thought, so for me he deserves a crack at a higher level and to get a better deal to secure his future,
if he can. In my eyes he owes us nothing and has been a decent performer overall, i would imagine he will be missed in and around the squad and probably a bit under valued by some of the fans. As for us plenty of cover within the club and coming in, Morgan may need pushing on and Thompson has his biggest year as a pro coming up, somebody has to step up and take his place, its natural progression and all clubs will be doing the same.
If he moves i hope he does well for him and for us as it will be another player that has came from our academy that is playing at a high level. This can only bring a positive outcome for potential future players to know they can make it and to know we are a club that gives chances and opportunities. Its a win, win if he steps up, so any hard feeling towards him is short sighted and makes no sense for all concerned.
