Where does Chaplin fit ? (1 Viewer)

A lot of if’s, but’s and maybe’s to come over the next weeks and months, but with Bright staying (granted rumour), Biamou and Jones (possibly) back next season, where does Chaplin fit ?

Robins seems to favour 1 big man up front with a number 10 (Bright) behind, and 2 wingers.

So next season I see Biamou/Bakayoko fighting for the lone striker, Bright number 10, Wakefield/another on the right, Jones/new signing on the left.

This leaves Chaplin and Ponticelli fighting for a spot on the bench.

I think there is a player in Chaplin, but I don’t see where his best position is.

He don’t bright takes his place tbh disappointed in his form since signing but then again in a 4-4-2 with a target man I think he would do wel strange when robins only plays 1 up front as to why we even bothered to waste 500k on him...does the same job as Andreu did doesn’t look much between them.

Panic signing Chaplin was.

I'm not too sure, can just see him coming on from the bench which was his role at portsmouth.

Any idea what wages we pay him? For a £500k signing, you'd be surprised if he was happy to sit on the bench. MR might try to offload if indeed he doesn't fit the plan.

Agree with the above, think he suits playing with a strike partner which was what Pompey fans said before he joined us (they were disappointed Jackett only playing 1 up).

The recent form of Jordy, Baka and Enhobakhare means he’s going to have to really fight for a start especially with big max back.

I do think there’s a player in him but not sure our set up will allow us to see it. He’s really going to have to come out firing in pre season.

Would be good to get a fee for him & Baka very possible and re invest

I think he will sign a new striker and bin Bakayoko - can’t see jones being fit until the new year and Biamou will at best be an occasional off the bench

He will not have Thomas and will adjust the formation

If you had a choice of binning one of Chaplin or Baka, whilst keeping the other other for next season, which would you pick? Based on the last couple of months I'd go with Baka....

Chaplin is obviously the better footballer

Let’s be fair Chaplin hasn’t been shite, he’s got in plenty of goal scoring positions but missed a lot of chances, I’d be more concerned if he wasn’t getting chances, Thomas similarly.

I also think we will sign a striker.

thomas isnt ours. clearly he isnt the end product and is young, but he is here to do a job this season. chaplin signed for longer so we can be a little more patient

Thomas needs another year somewhere where he will get plenty of games doubt he’ll get that at Derby especially if they go up.

We’re a better side with Bakayoko in it than we are with Chaplin in it but ideally we’d have neither in the starting line-up next season.

He has cost us the play offs from his misses first part of the season as much as Burge has

Think we’d struggle to sell Chaplin. Offers very very little far too lightweight, not a great touch, poor positioning and not the best finisher. Brings fuck all to the table

Chaplain is jot a goalscorer, let's be clear on that.

When the ball is at his feet I think he can pick out decent passes and offer a little but of pace. He is not one to lump balls to as he isn't going to win headers due to his height.

Unfortunately Bright is twice the footballer he is so if the rumours are true and he is signing then in the starting 11 Chaplain will struggle to get a place.

He won't want to sit on the bench either as that is why he wanted to leave Pompey.

So whose a more saleable asset Charles - Bakayoko or Chaplin? Articulate.
I just want to know what it is about Chaplin, who has been just as bad, if not worse, than Bakayoko this season, that makes it so you aren’t obsessively ranting about how much you hate him every 5 minutes on this forum? Biamou last season, Bakayoko this one, starting to develop a very strange pattern of behaviour.

And to answer your question, we’d probably get nothing for either as they’re both below average League One strikers.

Bakayoko by far. Has height and as much pace as Chaplin, it was embarrassing seeing Chaplin trying to outrun Beckles today who’s three times his size. If you’re that size and you’re not quick, you’re no use as a striker.

Why not play Chaplin alongside a big co-striker as we were told by Portsmouth fans is what we should do to get the best out of him?
Advice apparently ignored to our cost this season.
Or get rid of him, if played regularly, Ponticelli would get more goals than Chaplin.

Cash in on both of we have chance Baka I don’t feel will score 20 or even close to that next season he goes missing in games if he’s even involved at all Chaplin I’ve said from very early he’s not quick enough to be so small with a target man he would do better but we play 4231 & we’ve done well with that formation this season can’t really see us changing

You’ve been banging the Ponticelli drum for 3 years now, give it a rest.

Doesn’t Chaplin work best as a 2 up front? If so, begs the question as others have said why we bought him...

If MR retains the 4231 system and does not completely switch systems or have wingers and a target man type dual purpose striker arrive this summer to be able to accommodate playing two up front I don’t see the point in retaining Chaplin.

I rate Chaplin’s potential in a big man little man combo but it could be seen as a step back in the way MR has set out his philosophy over the season and partially last year two.

I don’t see a regular starting spot here for him to develop into what he could be and see a summer of fine tuning the forwards department.

On a side note I personally think we need to forget about JJ as major plans for next year. He’s missed a lot of football and game time, allow him to recover and build confidence slowly be it in a loan spell and bring in suitable cover for a season be it someone on a a year long loan or permanent deal.

He looked a shadow of the L2 JJ we last seen after a year out so this set back will of done no good in a bid to return to the levels L1 requires
