When I moved to the Isle of Wight, so many people assumed I was from Birmingham, I got tired of being asked and would wear a Cov City top whenever I was out, say fishing etc.

Currently in Goa and everyone has said I’m a Brummie I put this down to working in central Brum.

Other half is scouse and not once has anyone asked if she’s from Tranmere.

Strangely Richard Keyes and Gordon Strachan also here in north Goa but they never asked if I was Brummie

Just last week when on a work's call to someone from Scotland, and who knew I was based in Coventry, I was asked where I came from. When replying "Coventry" I was told that I didn't have an accent associated with the area, when in fact they expected a Brummie accent.

The ignorant certainly do. However, a Coventry accent is much more East Midlands than Birmingham imho.

Had never thought of that before, but I'd agree. Interesting though, that there are parts of Coventry that do seem to have a Brummie lilt: oddly, seems to be from parts of the East side of the City

I think generally speaking only somebody from Coventry (and Warwickshire) can place the accent. I'd say it has more features similar to East Midlands than Birmingham.

There was recently a questionnaire survey on the New York Times website, it placed my accent as Cov / Warks or around Lincoln.

the question and answer on the Chase became a bit of a double kick in the teeth for Coventrians, not only did she think Coventry was part of Birmingham but the answer to the question was Villa

Definitely true this. I read somewhere there is a north south divide in Coventry in regards to accents. "Bath/Barth" for example.
My wife's family are from Bulkington and they all sound like full on northerners to me.

I was Cape Verdi last week and was asked by a local "are you from Birmingham?" i said "No! Coventry" and he replied "Oh dear those poor fuckers without a football Stadium next season!"

I think it depends where they're from. I've heard it before from people, usually from the south who think it's simply a midlands accent. I think ours is quite distinctive, but do understand as I often think people from about Luton down and including Kent Middlesex and Surrey are all Cockneys, although some sound 'posher' than others.

the video clip of our fans at Peterborough Saturday after the game from the other stand does sound as if there is a brummie twinge to our chanting.
