Paying for Godiva Festival / Council Overspend (1 Viewer)

Looks like it overspent by hundreds of thousands so will be charging people not from within Coventry...

Why did it overspend? Because they didn't sell enough tickets at the Ricoh so were switched to Godiva.

What gets me is the Godiva festival costs a packet and is free and people come from out side of Coventry to see it. Ive no interest in the festival and Im sure many others have no interest. Why not sell tickets in advance and use the money to pay for the set up etc.
Times are hard for social services etc and that money could be spent elsewhere. So they tried to have it at the Ricoh where Im sure the Wasps would of had a good pay day from it.
Should never have been free from day 1.

Do we know which acts these where that were booked for Ricoh Arena concerts?

The desperation to help Wasps is embarrassing, I thought they'd offloaded that liability as part of the brilliant deal with Wasps?

Most big concerts like this usually work with a big national promoter, why were CCC going it alone on this? Seems completely amateurish

"The artists were instead booked to the Godiva Festival, so we cut our losses in that respect. We do not have a figure but there might have been a small administrative loss."

From a CT article in December. Small administrative loss!

For any other local promoter, say Empire, putting on a gig is completely at their own risk. For Wasps, don't worry, the council will underwrite any losses for you. It stinks.
I don't know the people behind the Empire I so may be wrong in regards to the way they work, but most venues make their money by the hiring of the venue and bar takings. It's normally the promoter independent of the venue who will pay the fee to the artist and a smaller fee to the venue. So basically CCC thought they could do all this.

very odd

2 things- 1) Did anyone really expect Roman keating to sell out a gig at the Ricoh? Delusional if they did.

2) The Godiva festival should have been charging years ago and get some decent bands/acts instead of yesterdays washed up people.

The godiva wouldn't work if it did what you suggest and for a free festival the lone ups have been more than decent

I think it's a mix, there is a local promoter though 'Clarity Leisure Coventry'

Plus the festival fills my local boozer with men in their 50s wearing Harrington jackets, ear rings, vests, denim jackets, commando trousers and fat birds covered in tats with big flabby arms and have either red or green hair. And if it rains and they all come flocking back smelling like a wet Alsatian and queue up to use the bogs for 20 mins.

Yup. It's also all about profile and wellbeing - not everything we spend money on has to be social work, NHS, schools... and it really shouldn't be an either/or. If we go down that path, society is stuffed.

That being said, does still seem rather an odd decision, this one.

Thought Ronan was awful but my wife was keen - best for me was Tony Christie - love that suit

The two acts were Ronan and Gabrielle - both were scheduled for the Ricoh and ended up a Godiva. I've not idea why the Ricoh took on the financial burden - should have rented the venue to the promoter of the concerts as is the norm, If the promoter doesn't think it'll sell well enough to pay that rent then the concerts go elsewhere -simple.

As for did anyone think Ronan could sell out the Exhibition Hall - I don't see why they'd have thought not. Boyzone (of whom Ronan is the most popular member) are doing a farewell tour and in much bigger venues than the exhibition hall. My sisters been to a few like that and they've been nearly full. I think the problem is more likely promotion.

My guess is the council felt the boost to local businesses during the festival was worth it. Doesn't mean they should've taken on the financial burden on the public purse though.

London Wasps:
"We can't sell out a concert and risk losing a few quid can you help"
CCC
"yeah no bother, we'll take the loss so you don't have to"

CCFC
"We're going to go bust if nobody helps us find somewhere to play"
CCC
"Not my problem, should have thought about that before we sold the Ricoh from under you"

The top bits fine but the bottom bit would be much more accurate if you'd said.

CCFC (BR era): We can't afford to build our new stadium
CCC: OK we'll set up a company to take out a huge loan to cover building costs, then you can buy that company later
CCFC (BR era): We can't afford to buy it.
CCC: OK you can rent the stadium for the same amount you're paying for your current dilapidated stadium with half the capacity
CCFC (SISU era): We're not willing to pay the asking price or the agreed rent so we're going to stop paying rent altogether to financial distress you and sue you.
CCC/ACL: OK we'll reduce the rent
CCFC (SISU era): That's not good enough - we want money from food and parking as well
CCC: Can't do that as it's contracted and will cost a huge amount to tear up the contract. But I'm sure we'll be able to come to some arrangement at some point.
CCFC (SISU): No we're moving out of the stadium and going to build our own. We want the unencumbered freehold of the stadium and we're not paying a penny for it. The stadium's worthless without us as a tenant so we'll sue you for it.
CCC: We've found another team willing to buy it.
CCFC (SISU): That's not fair - we're suing you for selling it undervalue (yes we said it was worthless and sued you on that basis but that's beside the point)
CCC/Wasps: You can continue playing there for the time being but you've got to stop suing us or we'll kick you out.
CCFC (SISU): We're going to have nowhere to play soon - why won't you help us out?
CCC/Wasps: Are you going to stop suing us?
CCFC (SISU): No, of course we;re still going to sue you?
CCC/Wasps: Tough shit then.

Richardson had long gone when the council took on the project. I didn't bother reading after that.

It's quite funny really, over time all of them have come out of the woodwork when it comes to the council.

Apart from the bits you missed out and got wrong.

Accurate otherwise though.

How’s the milk round these days Mr Head of Council Finance?
