Must be one of the youngest starting 11s in English football .

22 years of age .

Do we expect too much from such a young side sometimes ? Are we still a good 2 -3 years off seeing the best of some of these players and does age really factor in to our recent bad run and our inability to pull out of it quickly ?

Very young side and squad tbh

According to the stats Coventry have started with the youngest starting 11 in the division in over half the matches this season (13 times )

I feel like many times over the years we have had a young lineup, which in recent seasons has mostly been when we've struggled, but not always (see the Armstrong / Kent / Murphy) period.

The boys certainly seemed up for the battle today, really impressed with how they harried Charlton, won most of the second ball and kept the pressure up. Exactly the performance we needed after a lean run.

I think nick and Grendel expect too much. Everyone else on here seem pretty realistic

It's good to get a win to end the year on and break a poor run that was becoming a worry. We are doing okay and if we finish around 14th to 12th it will be a good season back in league 1 and show progress. Anything higher will be a bonus. I am still prepared to give most our signings time to bed in and improve. The one who really should be firing by now is JCH and he isn't, he just doesn't have the right competitive attitude for me. Time to give Hiwula a run down the middle with Chaplin and give them a good six matches before judging.

Agree, let them get used to each other and see where they will be so they can form a partnership. As long as we can keep it on the ground and work crosses in then it will be promising.

I'm not sure what we will do without Thomas, I can see him putting bayliss on the right but it just takes any pace out we have.

Sounds like we have a potential for a good U23 side

What's that got to do with when people discuss things on match threads about what is happening there and then?
Seems people are willing to accept not awfulness but potential. Potential means mistakes, potential means misplaced passes, means missed tackles and runs but also means great strikes and excellent tackles and surprising good moves. If we want to watch top class football we are watching the wrong club

Of course.

It doesn't mean people should put their fingers in their ears if people play really bad and try and pretend it didn't happen. Likewise when they play really well.

It is discussed game by game, a player might have a shocker one game and the game of his life the next.

To just say "yeah but potential" doesn't really excuse things.

What explains yours and grendels comments of Bayliss yesterday before he got the winner? Most people gave him a bang average 6 you guys were at 3? It’s fine

The fact that before he scored and apart from a ten minute spell be was awful. Simple passes going out of play, running into danger and giving them the ball to counter attack. Moaning at his team mates when he messed up.

Because he scored at the end doesn't mean he played well all game.

He was poor for 85 minutes and if his name was Finch and not Bayliss he’d have been slaughtered on here.

Bayliss was poor yesterday.

In fact, he hasn't been very good for a few months. Too much is expected from him.

2 goals and 1 assist in 24 games is why we can't rely on him as highly as we do.

I think the OP has a very good point. Young players swing in and out of form and it’s a very simple fact. They just don’t have experience it’s as simple as that so swings of form in such a young team should be expected. So yes. A small majority of our fans do expect too much.

I agree

The guy on the radio made some excellent points about players in the premiership who we’ve had in our youth and I bet some of our fans were scathing about their chances of them making the grade

Maddison
Christie
Wilson
Harries
Sturridge

Patience is needed with young players, and we’re not in a bad state at all. You could see we lacked confidence, because we started to play and try more things after Hiwula’s goal. We’re now 3pts off of 8th place. We had an excellent run followed by a poor one, and that levels out. To have beaten a side like Charlton is a big confidence boost and hopefully we can follow it up v Southend. The away from, however, needs to improve drastically.

The problem is, the goal for the team is ill-defined. We want promotion, but when? This season? Next? Or is it a 2-3 yr project? So right now, too many fans take it as it comes, we’re terrible when we lose, but great when we win. We’re very fickle as a fan base. Frankly, put a bit of perspective on this season and I’d say we’re doing well. We’ve bought in young players who’ll improve and they need more support from experienced players to take them to the next level. As long as we’re not in any real danger of getting sucked into a relegation dog fight, I’m not that fussed where we end up because I don’t see the playoffs as a realistic goal. In an ideal world, I’d love us to sneak into 6th on the last game of the season!

Why do people keep harping on about players ages?
Pele and Michael Owen both scored in the World Cup finals when they were 17!
Plenty of 17-19 year olds have played at a much higher level than L1.
If you are good enough, you are old enough.
Young players are usually faster, fitter and have quicker recovery times, so they do have some advantages over older players.

No ones doubting individual talent. But how many teams that are as young as ours win titles? Very few.

The only reason the team has a young average age is that the senior signings Robins has made have been poor

They share so many idiotic opinions anyone might think they are the same person.

What were your views about their performance yesterday? Feel free to point out what was idiotic about the comments about the performance and why....

When we play a good team like Portsmouth or Sunderland it is a good benchmark to see how far we have to go. When we play Shrewsbury or Walsall it should tell us where we are.
Luton were very good and had that promotion feel about them, Charlton were okay and were beaten by a better side on the day.
I think that sometimes we forget that it's a sport we are watching 11v11 and you have to earn the victory by finding a way how to win.
Robins is a proven manager and deserves a big thank you in my opinion.
Where we are today is giant leap forward to where we were 20 months ago and let's not forget that last season we were losing to Newport and FGR, getting thrashed byYeovil and rather than spending time vilifying the players and manager it would be good to reflect on the journey we are on and recognize that our trajectory is going in the right direction.

Yes, expecting simple passes to not be fired into the stand.

Seems that people are willing to accept awfulness.
I agree, ive played against younger players at local league level and they always managed to make the majority of their passes count so I cannot understand how come someone who plays every single day to fuck up so many times during a match? Is it laziness too casual or lack of ability?

Also playing against professionals who are better at blocking off opportunities and intercepting, less time to think before being closed down, etc.

Not really, you can see it’s part of a wider transfer recruitment policy. Even with Ogogo and Brown starting, we’d have a starting eleven that is about the 2nd or 3rd youngest in the division. We had an average age below 24 with Doyle in the team. The age gap between Ogogo, Andreu and Kelly is pretty minimal.

You’re presenting a half truth. Whichever way you paint it, the squad is a young one. Young teams need time to develop.

Is there a list by average age? How did you calculate we are second to third youngest?

Yes but there were experienced players around them. Your average 17 year old off the street or even in a football academy is not actually good enough at this level. There are always exceptions like Tommy Hutchison playing professional football into his 40's, it doesn't mean everyone can!

Yes, here’s a list. As you can see, Walsall, Barnsley and ourselves have the youngest teams in this division. It’s worth noting that, at 37, Doyle is propping up our averages as he’s 7-8 years older than our next oldest (Andreu - 30, Brown and Ogogo at 29).

One of our lineups had an average age of 24 years with Brown and Doyle in it v Barnsley and Sunderland at home.

So Charlton have an average age of 24?

How are Barnsley doing by the way?
