Traffic and speed cameras - For or against? (1 Viewer)

I am 100% for, as long as the system works properly and is administered correctly.

I see moments of absolute lunacy every single day (4 cases in just the last 3 days).

Latest one today was someone deliberately going round a roundabout the wrong way to save time.

Crazy!!

I think it needs a bit of common sense and to decide whether it's about making money or cutting down on accidents.

Schools, accident blackspots then of course. Vans parked up trying to make a bit of money then it's nonsense.

It's a no brainer trying to stop people by schools driving silly.

Cameras to fine people doing 46 in a 40 on non pedestrian roads with no other cars about is a bit extreme and just for the money. (or to keep the speed awareness courses fully booked).

Wasn't talking about parking though.

Cameras at traffic lights and then speed cameras.

You live in Keresley too don't you. Have you been hearing cars racing around at high speed late at night?

Hear them regularly. Sounds like Coundon way.

Absolutely for, the standard of driving in this country is getting worse. Saturday night doing 70 overtaking on the the M40, some guy must have come about 100 MPH up my ass... flashing his lights, ridiculous to be honest.

I am also for blackboxes to be installed in every single car. There is no needs to speed. I agree in parts with what Nick says about doing 46 in a 40 with nobody about. But that's the exception rather than the norm.

On another driving topic: Honestly thing the UK should move towards Freeway rather than motorway. Nobody abides by the keep left rule and it makes traffic horrid.

Yep. I am talking about lunacy that will get people killed as much as anything.

Nearly every day I see madness and it's basically people cutting corners (literally too) to save a few seconds time.

Never ever seen anyone deliberately drive the wrong way around a roundabout to save time before.

Yep, it was really early and hardly any cars about, but still.

Definitely deliberate. He slowed right down and had a look and then went the wrong way round in order to save driving around the entire roundabout.

The other crazy thing I saw was someone waiting to turn right at a traffic light. The oncoming traffic in the opposite direction, driving straight on obviously having right of way.

Have seen it before, the lights turn green and the car wanting to turn right zips in before the oncoming traffic sets off properly. Don't have much of a problem with that, but two days ago, a car zipped in front, just making it, but then a second car wanting to turn right zipped in too and missed the oncoming car by millimetres. The oncoming car having to break and I was right behind and had to break sharply too.

Madness.

No I just meant normal driving rather than parking.

In terms of traffic lights I think they should all have cameras on them (even more so pedestrian crossing types).

I have noticed after the games at the Ricoh, there are an increasing amount of bellends driving about around there like it's a racetrack. Whether it's going up the A444 and flying around the roundabout or up the road towards Holbrooks. Even with a crowd of people they floor it.

A lot of the focus does seem to be on bypasses, country lanes. It doesn't do much (like you say) against people driving like twats in some residential roads.

For - I live in a tiny village with lots of horse riders, dog- walkers, ramblers etc and no pavements - you'd be amazed how fast people take blind bends with no concern for what's around the corner.

We seemed to have loads of cameras and now not so many at all.

People are now driving like crazy lunatics. I see it every single day now.

Yep, people generally driving dangerously.

I get that speed kills but a lot of the people driving like lunatics gets missed. A lot of that is probably less police on the roads as well.

Mainly for, but the amount of people that speed up to them and then hit the brakes hard with nothing in front I think is far more dangerous (eg London Road ones). I think they serve a purpose for a while then should be moved. Lower speed limits by schools are a must as I often see really poor decisions from kids when dropping my daughter off and still see idiots bombing around there. Bigger bumps can help, but I have a big car and not so sure I'd agree if I had something low to the ground.

I live on a particularly bad bend and there's been quite a few collisions - usually cars hitting tractors - the worst one where the towed harrowing tool went over the bonnet of the oncoming car and cracked the windscreen - a few more inches and the driver would have been decapitated. I had to campaign to get the speed limit down to 30 but Highways wouldn't budge until I sent them photos and informed that as soon as there was a fatality I would remind them and the local press of my campaign and their inaction - that soon worked!

As an insight into the insanity of local council/highways - when they changed the sign down to 30 for this section of road - they noticed that the single track lane off this bend (that goes to a few cottages and nowhere else and is an unmade up road for most of its length so 20mph at the most) wasn't included so they had to spend time and money putting up the national speed limit signs to indicate a return of 60mph for this section! You couldn't make it up!

I think average speed cameras over say a mile or further is better than static camera.

The speeders will slow down at a speed camera day 40 in a 40 then speed off hitting 60+.

Agree on traffic light cameras you see so many going through on red! Seems to be increasing!

It is and very much so.

Used to see the odd one risk it, maybe two, but now you something have 3, 4 or 5 cars go over after a light has changed to red.

I won't do it, so am fully expecting someone to go into the back of me real soon.

Making people do retests i think needs to be up there as well. The thought that there are people out there driving that learnt to drive over 50 years ago is terrifying!

My local favourite junction at the minute is the Leamington Road and Kenilworth road junction just down from Henry's school, the amount of people that screw that up is incredible!

I work in Brum, the standard of driving is appalling.

I think you'll find that it's drivers under 20 that account for disproportionately more fatal accidents than other age groups although over 80s are a bit more at risk.

Don't disagree and i think using the roads is a privilege and not a right, i wouldn't be against a retest every 5 years (probably not practical though!)

Not sure what can be done about the 17-24 age group to be honest, i think its just an immaturity that can't be taught!

i had quite a large amount of cheese last night just before bed, so at 4.55 this morning I was flying naked around the street whilst being chased by a giant monster, before falling into an endless pit, where all of my teeth fell out (or something like that, I can't remember)

I have been driving both casual and professional (ex-bus driver) for just over 43 years. I may be getting on a bit, but I'm no slouch. I'd never had so much as a parking ticket in all my years of driving. I've received 7 annual "Safe Driving Awards" from the West Midlands Traffic Commission during my time as a bus driver. Yet just recently, (September), I was clocked by a speed camera travelling at 45mph in a 30mph zone going through a village with a mile straight road through it. I hadn't noticed any speed limit signs, but hey, that would be classed as 'driving without due care and attention'. So, I got hit with a hundred quid fine and three points on my once spotless licence. Am I upset? At first, yes. But since then, I realise that speed kills and I now set my speed limiter to match the road speed limits. If I hold anyone up because I now keep to the limits, then tough shit, because three things come to my mind. 1) I can't afford to keep paying £100, 2) I don't want any more points on my licence and 3) I could kill someone.

On point 3, we say that about you most days on here.

Not enough police cars on the road to put people off driving wrecklessly

That's the thing.

A lot of it is replaced with the Tax Checker cameras now rather than actual police.

When I first passed my test I'd have a "producer" most weeks mainly because I was young and secondly because I was always driving about for the sake of it (because I could).

traffic light yes
Scamera - no - just fund raisers
More law on the road yes - double bonus - they can stop the dangerous ones - keep an eye out for crime

I got caught by a cop (not a camera) doing 22 in a 20 zone. Since it was a school zone, fines were doubled.
It was an obvious trap, a long downward hill where even with your foot off the accellerator you'd exceed 20, and then the 20 limit sign right at the bottom of the hill and the cop parked in a hidden driveway.
There was a guy here that used to drive wearing a monkey mask because the law said you had to be recognizable in the photo.
He accumulated lots of tickets. I think they got him in the end, not sure how.

You know why it’s 20 don’t you? I love how we whinge about speed limits and then cry to mummy about how little Johnny got knocked over and the person is a monster. Stick to the speed limit and avoid killing children. Good enough for me

The standard of driving on motorways in shocking in terms of being able to keep left. I disagree with you though, I would actually enforce the law but fine people £250 and give them 6 points. If someone is unable to understand the concept of keep left, they probably shouldn't be driving.

The driving standards are very poor, I work in Birmingham and regularly see people doing less then 50 down the A45, which is probably a bigger problem than speeding.

Around schools, nursing homes, etc. I'm all for traffic cameras, but out in the open I'm really not sure they do all that much other then used as an income stream.

I got caught doing 50 in a 40 earlier this year, clear 2 lane dual carriageway, not a single car insight, when I see the van my intial thought was fuck it, I've already been caught so i just carried on at the same speed.
