Unless we say he's faulty and we want our money back.

I was surprised with his pace when he was attempting to round his man however......another topic about him is his strike partner.

My personal opinion is he’s not playing in the right role, with the right man or side set up to benefit him.

To me he’d be a far better predictor playing off a natural target man. I’d say if you went and got Jayden Stockley in January then he’d have the perfect partner to be a predator in the box.

However you’d then need to get a natural winger and stick with a 442 or use Sterling in a more advanced role bringing and Jack Grimmer back in at right back. The summer recruitment was built around the side playing 4231 so we’re lacking natural wide players.

Agree , Chaplin is a striker and needs to be in and around the penalty area,

He shouldn't be playing to deep in midfield, we have Doyle and Kelly, ect, for that .

He does go looking for the ball a lot.

McNulty was often guilty of the same thing though.

I still have great faith that Chaplin will be a very good player for us.

I think we are all hoping he can become our secret weapon but he needs to start stepping his game up - Ponticelli never got the same opportunity and game time although he had a similar background to Chaplin

Trying to fill the shoes of a 28 goal striker was always going to be a huge task. However, I have faith Chaplin will come good. At 21 he's by no means the finished article and MR himself admitted that bringing in inexperienced young/raw players is now our buying policy. He may not be prolific this season but give it time and I'm sure he'll have no trouble finding the net on a consistent basis.

It's fine lines and essentially boils down to whether what Doyle brings to the team adds more overall value than we lose in the concessions we have to make elsewhere on the pitch because of him. I'd be making that decision on a game by game basis now.
There are still games where Doyle would be my first choice in his position e.g. longer ball, physical teams like Gillingham and Wycombe or a Steve Evans team but in games where we want to go out and take the game to the opposition I believe Bayliss is having to curb some of his natural instincts (perceived by some as him drifting in and out of games) as Doyle can't cover the ground fast enough in a midfield 2. Add into that Chaplin looks like he's being asked to play deeper to help fill the hole and I think it's a large part of why our actual performances (not results) can be quite patchy over 90 minutes - we've been brilliant at times but average at others. Away at Burton I'd play Kelly for an hour with Chaplin under instruction to play higher, giving Doyle the last 30 mins when we're 3-0 up, against Peterborough I'd start Doyle so we have someone in the ref's ear from the off.

We're doing well now and if things stay as they are I think we'll be good for 5th to 8th pushing hard for a lower play off place. Having seen most of the other teams in this league now though I really think with the squad we have, we could be pushing autos.

Seems unfair to compare him in pace to Thomas who would leave most in league one for dead. Chaplin is decent over 5 yards, but also don't think that's his game to get around a man. He's a finisher who does need to be in the box, but strikers typically come deep for the ball when they don't feel involved.

Also, not sure why people are saying Doyle's legs have gone, he's played every league game, has the most completed passes in league 1 with 80% completion rate, without him our team would not tick. He's essential to the way we try to play football, he's most definitely still the engine of the team and I'd have him in my team every week - especially with the young team that we do have. Doyle reads the game in the sense that he doesn't have to cover massive amount of ground like he did when he was younger. If anything he was exploited at the weekend because of Ogogo's lack of positional sense.

I was told in strictest confidence that Portsmouth have fitted Chaplin with some kind of technology that restricts his top speed. It will be removed once he's fully bought and paid for.

Pompey fans nailed it with him he needs a big man to play off I feel he would do well with an actual target man but having to play so deep and not being the fastest it will hinder him.

On the Doyle subject until we have anyone who’s can replace him he’s one of the first on the team sheet the current crop are not even close people forget he’s 37 years old ffs still better than Ogogo & Kelly.

Great post. "Doyle's legs have gone" is a lazy argument to make. He is critical to way this team functions and I don't think Kelly or Ogogo can adequately fill the same role that he does.

Have to agree re Doyle, he is so inspirational to us, he’s had off days wasn’t brilliant Saturday but then there he is 3 minutes to go in the 6 yard box tapping the equaliser, then gathers the ball in pursuit of a winner. The whole Doyle package is going to be so hard to replace
