Automatic Promotion Or Play Offs ? (1 Viewer)

As we're starting to settle down a bit from our great day at Wembley on Monday, it got me thinking that even though automatic promotion was our teams aim, I've loved our play off matches, and the feeling I got at the final whistle will stay with me for years no doubt.
So my question is : Would you have preferred going up automatically, or sod that the play offs were bloody great.

Loved it, but prefer automatic in the next two seasons.

Unless can guarantee beating Villa in Championship play-off the season after next, but that's unlikely as they'll be in League One then.

autos clearly, dont risk your clubs future for the chance of a great day out

the playoffs are best way to go up yes but its always the backup plan, well it should be for anyone who cares anyway

it worked out well this year and i would take it again next but ONLY if we couldnt finish top 2! give me no fanfare 2nd all night long!

p.s we are 7th favs i think so a playoff push could be on

Would've preferred to be in Accrington's position of having a title sewn up and being able to watch 4 teams fret over the last spot.

Honestly, I'm still feeling rough today! Autos for me.

Ask me at the weekend when I'll hopefully be feeling better and my answer might be different!

Playoffs-always the best way to go up! Not enjoyed or been up for a match as much in years than I was for the 2nd leg against Notts County. Got the candle burning again for me.

I'd love to experience an automatic promotion, as champions one day would be incredible.

Saying that Monday was a highly enjoyable experience for me and a day I'll never forget. I honestly had no nerves once the game had started. You could tell there was a confidence about our players and that they weren't going to lose that game. Just watched the first half again and it was fine lines, we could have gone into the second half with a lead had the players taken one or two touches less before pulling the trigger on a couple of our opportunities.

Autos. We cant ride this Wembley record forever. Also I feel as though I've been in a car crash, all my muscles hurt, my voice has gone, I've got a burn and a split lip. Wembley is no good for your health.
Yesterday I felt like that too aching all over. Got a touch of heatstroke, hungover, neck stiff from being strangled by my son after each goal, and skint.
But aside from that I loved the whole day !

By the time we've won the Carling Cup, the Checkatrade and the FA Cup we'll be fed up of Wembley next year and would struggle to match Exeter's number, so I think I'll go for the autos.

As special as Monday was, surely it'd feel even better to go up as Champions? Might even be less stressful too!

automatic promotion and the checkatrade final will do for me this year

Autos please. That was a tense as a tense thing for 3 weeks! Imagine how we would have felt if we had lost out!

Automatic every day! You can find you 10 points above the 6th team and you can have a bad game on the day and, that's it!

Although I've loved the play offs I'm going for automatic promotion. I think the game that wins us automatic promotion would be just as tense as Wembley, and the celebrations would equal Monday

So the majority prefer automatic promotion than the lottery of the play offs. It would be kinder to the nervous system for sure, as I'm still worn out and knackered from the whole day. Am I moaning ? Am I hell I'd go through it all again in a heartbeat !

Autos for me. Would mean an extra X amount of happy Saturdays during the season and any income lost from not being in the play offs would probably be offset by crowd gains as people join the party.

Prefer 46 great days out to gain auto than all the anxiety of anything less being 4-0 up at half time

play offs

Puts more money in the kitty and was a great experience.
See I reckon overall we would have had about 5k extra on average for each home game if we were battering everyone & scoring 3 or 4 goals as well as mostly win/draw away

Autos. And I didn’t say that at the start.

Problem this year was we didn’t at any point come across as “doing well” to the average casual as we were often around mid table to the untrained eye. Compare that to the number of ransoms that struck up conversations about City with me when we were top under mowbray and it’s obvious that the long term benefits of getting regular fans back only come with a sustained top three place.

So up as Champions next year please, will take Checkatrade if we want another Wembley appearance.

As your question was in reference to this season for me to finish 2nd or 3rd was a bit of a anticlimax, for me it was win it or the play offs. Obviously there was no guarantees but nothing is in this world.

The outcome was good anyway! Three great games of football to extend our season

Autos every time. I remember the days before bloody American style "play-offs". I believe they were introduced the year we won the FA Cup?

Auto promotion has to be the better way I suppose, but in hindsight I'm so glad we did it through the playoffs. They have been such a tremendous experience, the semi despair of the first leg and the feeling that the rain, and waterlogged pitch might had ruined our chances, add to that all the controversy, that just made the feeling of winning so convincingly in the second leg so much better. and then the way we won Monday's game. Right now I wouldn't trade that for finishing as champions.

Can’t believe how many people have said automatic would have been better.

The OP’s question wasn’t whether you would rather finish in the playoff positions, it was “Would you have preferred going up automatically?”. Surely nobody in their right mind would trade in the Notts County and Wembley occasions for clinching promotion at the Ricoh (or elsewhere) in early May with a modest crowd and a celebration at the final whistle? Let’s face it, we absolutely had to get out of the 4th Division but it’s not such a big deal in itself – it was the spectacular way we did it.

Top 8 is realistic with the ability shown and gelling in recent weeks.

Buy a couple of good additions then a flirt with play offs is possible.

Will need to spend 500k to get anywhere near autos or require an inspired loan ala Armstrong.

Should be a cracking season looking upwards not down.

Wouldn’t change anything about journey. The trip to Wembley was well worth it since we came away with a win!

Has to be autos, to hear Queens “We Are The Champion” echoing round the Ricoh is long held dream of mine. I know it’s a great feeling and you can’t beat winning at Wembley
Let’s all think of the elation we are feeling after Monday and the open top ride through the city last night, but just imagine the pain in our guts had we lost, to win in a play off final is one thing but to lose I can’t bare thinking about. So as said autos for me but there’s always the Checkstrade for a Wembley experience

Still 25-1 at Bet Victor as champions... joint 14th.

Agree next year autos please!
