Sympathy for Shrewsbury & Exeter. (1 Viewer)

I do feel for the fans of these two clubs as in both cases they were well clear in points of their opponents,as many people have said on this forum the season is over 46 games not one.

Given if the situation had been reversed I for one would not have been happy.

This is all down to the greed which has entered the game, and in some ways to the detriment.

Whilst it’s true it’s been this way for many years now , we all operate under the same rules so I don’t have sympathy for any team that doesn’t reach automatics then fails to go up why ? Because it could just as easily have been us .

That’s football

Tend to agree, but the Play Offs resulted in promotion for us. Why not have a play off for the third relegation place too ? Not complaining as we got promoted but would have been pissed off had we finished fourth and lost in the Play Offs to a team finishing below us with fewer points over 46 games. Sky and money !

I have sympathy for the fans of those clubs as well. But the competition rules now include the play-offs, and all teams are happy (I presume) with that format when the season kicks off, so they have to take the disappointment of not going up if they fail in the play-offs.
It has meant over the years that the interest is maintained for supporters of far more teams as they strive to reach a play-off place, and a chance to go up (as we have) despite not finishing in an automatic promotion position.
The fact that we beat Notts County who were an anti-football team reflects positively on the play-offs in my opinion.

They used to include relegated teams but I think after a fracas at Charlton vs Leeds it was stopped.

As if any of those would give a shit if they went up from being in the last playoff spot?

What happened G?

Can’t find any trouble in the reports so perhaps not but they did play in a final - it used to be two legs and included the team in a league above

Interesting that on their big day Exeter and Shrewsbury (and Aston Villa) just didn't show up. It's rather like the exam at the end of the course work, and you have to be able to handle both. Fortunately we did.

Hell
Let's go thr whole hog and go the Rugby route where any team in the top four can be deemed Champions over two games.
Not, just being Ironic .
It is right there was a position included among relegated Clubs to join the mix and save themselves.
I remember when they first introduced and didn't agree but that has waned.
Also surprising how long ago their introduction came ,not long after we won the Cup IIRC.

I think Charlton got away with it two years on the trot which must have shredded their supporters nerves to bits. Can't recall any major trouble between the Charlton & Leeds fans but, if there's a poor result and Leeds are involved in it, their fans are going to kick off.

Fulham and Shrewsbury I can understand, they were a long way clear.

With Exeter, the next four could of all finshed on equal points right up to the last day.

In Ligue 1 they have a relegation/promotion play-off.

The teams in Ligue 2 who finished 4th and 5th play each other in a quarter final. The winner of that plays the team who finishes 3rd in Ligue 2 in the semis then whoever wins that plays 18th in Ligue 1 in the final

Felt for the shrews as they were top for a lot of that season against the two promoted sides with far superior budgets but that's football unfortunately. Exeter could have pipped Wycombe to 3rd spot but were way too inconsistent at the end and paid the price.

Yeah I agree mate. They had no idea about the playoffs until the day before they started.

Feel a bit for Shrews in regard to missing out on automatics, but the play offs are what they are and keep the league interesting.

As for Exeter; only in the sense that they have lost two finals in a row - but rather them than us in regard to Monday.

If we did the old way, there wouldnt have been a playoff final to have been played between Exeter and Cov...

You’re right, a season is 46 games and not one and over the season, neither Shrewsbury nor Exeter were good enough for automatics. So it’s a moot point, and the end of this discussion.

In any case, when it came to crunch time, we blew both Notts County and Exeter away and there really isn’t a discussion to be had about who deserved to win those games.

To be blunt, and this doesn’t make for a good reading for the Exeter fans... If they’ve missed out on automatic promotion, and lost two playoff finals in consecutive season, then clearly they aren’t ready for L1.

system was changed because it was when they were shrinking PL to 20 clubs.

also now with significant financial imbalances between divisions the club 1 place above relegation spots would probably have a significant advantage in terms of investment in players/wages etc.

Oh I get that -just a bit of sympathy for the fans that's all

Yeah but, no but, yeah but.......

Fuck, you’re right.

All the best for next season! After missing out twice, I literally can't even comprehend how that feels, Monday was my first chance to see Cov in a playoff final and Cov's only opportunity at promotion in 51 years. So commiserations, I hope you do better than Notts County and join us in L1 for the 2019/20 season!

The playoffs could've been anyone's - all four teams won one and lost one against one another, so it really was a lottery.

It was easy years ago to be against the play offs and fight the cause of the team finishing 3rd or 4th, but then we never looked like being involved in them. Having been through the experience and winning them I think they're great. I'm hoping the league 2 play off final next year is between Exeter and Notts, with the ref missing a blatant penalty for county and Exeter breaking upfield and scoring the winner whilst the county players complain. When the final whistle blows Nolans head literally explodes.

1) the play offs predate sky by several years
2) originally a team fighting relegation would be involved but this system was abandoned as it resulted in crowd trouble too often
3) I don’t think Liverpool should be allowed to enter the champions League as they’re not champions, but they played by the rules and got to the final. Got to accept the rules as laid out at the start of the competition. Same w the playoffs. They’re the rules. Momentum and on the day performance often beats season long achievements.

I agree,
I actually thought, with about 5 games to go, that Exeter were going to overtake Wycombe, and they could have, so it wasn't only down to losing the play-off final
