Hi all,

A genuine congratulations on your win and your travelling support last night. Meadow lane always looks poor for the cameras as the Sirrel stand (opposite the camera gantry) is either empty or full of opposition support! However you played a part in the atmosphere, and whilst the result was a primary factory, having the away section taking over the acoustics from about 80min onwards was both bitter and sweet.

Firstly, that was our "England 1-4 Germany" last night, no 2 ways about it. A lot of our fans feel chated and i have to agree. Whilst we were outplayed - and unusually outfought - for the first half, we got a late lifeline that changed both teamtalks. We came out in the 2nd as we should have started the first, and, less said about the second "goal", the better. At 2-2 with the momentum shifted, it would have been entirely different game and.....anyway, its like the Aunty, balls and Uncle situation though, it is what it is. Over the course of a season fortunes always level out so we shouldn't complain.

If I am honest, without any black and white specs, we didn't deserve it; not just on last night, but dare I say it, on the season. Our hardworking team of journeymen scraped and battled to a lot of early wins, but faded from jan onwards. They are now a year older, and would not have fared well against the likes of Gillingham, Bristol Rovers etc. Let alone the giant resources of Sunderland, Barnsley, Bradford, Charlton etc. We were fading as a team (clear top in Dec to 5th), whereas you seemed to be hitting a stride this calender year.

I know one or two Coventry fans personally and they enthuse about your youth system and local products, and therefore, it would seem you are indeed geared better to build whilst we still have a slightly sandy foundation. A day out at Wembley is always nice, but genuinely, I don't think we are ready. Nevertheless, we shall lick wounds, rebuild, and go again.

I was very impressed by the movement of your front two all night, you looked dangerous every time you attacked and whilst it might be down to some of our own immobility, hopefully it shows us what we are missing in our own team.

I wish you all the best for Exeter next week, if for no other reason, I want Coventry City out of the way as you'd be another thorn next season The better side won. Good luck from an exiled Magpie!

Finally, I always like to offer opposing fans memories of players we've share as clubs
- so here's my three, "John Williams (hence the username)", "David Pipe" and "Richard Duffy" (not the centre half that rutted with your forward last night!).

Excellent post Flying Postie. Don't think there's too many on here that would disagree that the disallowed goal should have stood but you have to marry that up with Jon Stead wrestling Grimmer as you scored your legit goal. Decent officials would have scrubbed that one off too.
Hope you make a better fist of it next season ! Try getting your manager to adopt the same sporting attitude as your good self !

Got to be honest, I have a massive soft spot for County. They were my Dads childhood team, I’ve been going to Nottingham all my life to see grandparents and I spent three years at Uni there. I’ve always looked out for your results and wished you well.

Well, I did up until I saw how your manager sets you up this season. Like Lincoln you’re a team that doesn’t just “fight hard”, you outright cheat at every opportunity and it’s disgusting to watch. From rolling about on the floor trying to get others sent off, to attacks off the ball and all the rest. The fact that a couple of decisions went against you for me is just “live the the sword, die by the sword”. Your entire game plan relies on poor refereeing.

I’d be gutted if I’d had those decisions against me, just as I was gutted that McNulty was incorrectly called offside when through on goal (a likely goal), and that we were playing against 11 men instead of 10 in the second half. Difference is my team played the game the way it should be played and if they hadn’t won it’d have been a victory for the dark arts.

Excellent post. Yes a few decisions did go against you and at 2-2 it would have been going in your favour. But as always with football it’s a game of ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’. I thought you could have been down to 10 before h/t.
You are right about our youth v your ageing team. I think you may need a few younger players if you are to get autos next year. I’m sure Nolan is already working on it. He is no fool and will realise that you lost because you were largely outpaced, out thought and outplayed rather than destroyed by ref decisions.

David Pipe offered so much promise but faded away, John Williams great memories, what he lacked in skill made up for it in commitment and pace in the 92-93 season see his contribution when in consecutive games we beat liverpool 5-1 (five) and Villa 3-0 on boxing day, Duffy seemed to be permanently on loan to us didn't take to kindly to him. Stead scored a few goals for us whilst in the championship including the winner at Posh, I met him at Notts last month during the league game, he remembers that goal.

I think that game plus the Lincoln home game a few weeks ago, were good training for last night. Best Notts player ever s the guy he scored twice in 92 to beat Luton and stop us from being relegated. Best of luck

I was really surprised at how Notts started that game - the way they started the 2nd half is what I was expecting from them for the 1st half. I obviously hoped City would tear into them from the off but even before the 1st goal, Notts looked.....nervous.

Its even more surprising considering the experience Notts had compared to us, and their home record (only 2 defeats at home before last night I think).

Yes, some decisions went our way, but a few went Notts way as well - no way they should have finished that game with 11 men on the pitch.

what score was the headbutt - was it before the disallowed goal? noway he should have stayed on for that- and with VOR that was a straight red

I did say both legs so we’d be one nil down when we kicked off

Yes, forgot that one on my list - the replay from behind the goal did look bad and I did think that was one we'd gotten away with.

But - you could go on all night, the corner from which you scored the first, was the ball in or fully out of the quadrant....

Genuine wish for luck next week, as I stated, despite the instinctive hatred annoyance from Nottingham, we do need you up and out of the way next season!

Thank you for your congratulations.

I can empathise with you and your fans because you had some pretty poor decisions against you, in your position, I'd be frustrated too.

I like the England-Germany comparison, however, even if the equaliser was allowed, we probably would've still went on to win the game because we really were the better side aside from that 15m spell, just as Germany outclassed us in 2010 (even had Lampard's goal stood). Whilst Nolan has every right to be frustrated at the officials, you can't go 2-0 down at home in a playoff semi-final and the refereeing didn't make you defenders defend uncharacteristically badly. To say the situation was 'really disappointing because it has not been of our own doing', is not entirely true. Despite the controversy, I don't think a neutral would disagree that we were the better side and deserved to win. We were good value for the draw in the first leg too, despite the poor penalty decision.

In last night's game, Brisley was lucky not to have been sent off, whilst it would've been a harsh red, people have been sent off for less. Before that, McNulty was called offside when he wasn't, through on goal for a 1v1, and feel like he would've scored had he not seen he was flagged. So whilst the big calls went against you, it wasn't like the officials were systematically against you.

Going into next season, you lot are in good hands because Nolan is doing a good job at your place and hopefully, you get promoted - I wanted us, Luton and yourselves to get promoted this season. Hopefully, we're waiting for you lot in L1.

Rob Matthews was the scorer, think it was their left back.

Funny piece of trivia: After that season and County saving our asses bigtime, in 92/93 the ball boys at Highfield Road had new track suits.... in black with white and gold trim. Coincidence ? :penguin:

It's a real shame that your manager Stinky shitty Nolan hasn't got the balls or the conduct of a Gentleman to admit defeat.

If McNulty had gone down and held his face(instead of standing his ground) when your player moved his head like a rutting stag into his, there would have been 1 red card.
If the ref or Lino had seen the bearded assassin Duffy move his arm / elbow into Max B's chin/face he would have been off.instead he dives like Tom Daley doing a half pike and holding his face as if he had been fouled. Name change "Oscar".Another red card.

maybe the handball pen is given under VAR 1-1

It seems most people apart from most Sky blues have forgotten that. Sky commentators kept banking on about the pen, Nolan has blanked it from his mind completely as have some city fans.

Also, we were still under the cosh and Notts C had momentum when we scored the 3rd, so getting back to 2-2 does not necessarily mean they would have gone on to win. We scored the 4th when according to Nolan, they were pushing to get back into it. Wouldn't they have been pushing for the winner then?

Thanks o.p. for a balanced and well reasoned response to the outcome of the semi final, while the officials performed poorly over both games, I have to say that decisions went against both sides at times (first leg penalty for the blatant handball, stead holding grimmer back for your first goal in the second leg, off side given against mcnulty when through, not to mention a red card for the headbut etc etc) although the decisions against you did look worse on tv as they resulted in goals.
Anyway, that’s football I guess, and if we had lost, I’m sure we would have been pissed off as well. I would like to wish you good luck for next season, I’m sure with a couple of younger additions you’ll be automatic promotion candidates next year.

Nice to see a sane Notts County fan. Some of the ramblings on social media are embarrassing but its the same for most clubs. Although the way the chairman and manager act probably doesn't help.

The what-if stuff doesn't really work because you can always cancel things out with decisions that have gone the other way. Like if you say the 1st leg pen shouldn't have been given and Notts would have gone in to last night 1-0 up you also have to then say what if the handball had been given and we'd got a pen for that. You end up with the same result.

Same last night. You can talk about their disallowed goal but they could easily have had 2 players sent off which would have had a big impact.

You are a great club with a great history. Don't let him drag you down, because unfortunately he is.

If i was a county fan I would feel hard done by, definitely a goal but we were given a few suspect offsides last night. McNultys one when he was through on goal jumps to mind. I think if your talking about balls outside of the quadrant you are clutching at straws to be honest.
I think we had plenty of goals in us last night so still thought we would have come out on top given how we were playing

They really were poor in the first half, and frankly, to have nicked a goal before halftime was a minor victory for them. We're a team who's never lost from a winning position, so going 2-0 down in the first half was suicidal for them.

Despite is righteous indignation in the press, Nolan surely can't play the victim in private because just about every neutral would say we were the better team and his side conceded 4 goals at home. With only the 3rd being controversial, but if their player doesn't slip, he clears it, and their two defenders gave Biamou time to put the ball on his right foot and place it. As a manager, you can't say that's good defending. Even at 4-1, we looked the most likely to score, heck, we had 2-3 decent chances in stoppage time!
