We would compete in my opinion but we need a few experienced players. You are not telling me we can’t beat mk dons and Walsall and bury etc. we can.

However it’s all relevant to the owners and the manger. How much money and wage budget is allowed and is the recruitment right. Mowbray has a decent budget and blew it at the end in a panic. However the more money you are given means you are more likely to get better players.

But yes we could compete.

Probably wouldn't get relegated but it definitely wouldn't be an exciting season

Depends on how you define compete. I don’t think that the current squad would be relegation fodder (which would be a bonus) but not convinced that they’ll be competing for promotion/playoffs.

Compete? As in what definition? Probably be a bottom half team, but just about good enough to stay up.

We have too many frailties to compete in the top half in league 1, we're struggling to nail down a place in the top 7 in league two.

It's the leadership in the team that concerns me more than the collective ability of the group to compete in the league above. Doyle's not going to cope in L1 and the rest of the squad is so meek. Burge, Haynes, Shipley, Bayliss, McDonald, Willis etc all quiet as mice during games.

I don't think relegation, but we do need somebody to bang heads like Esoterica says.

Top 10 in league two and bottom 10 in league one there is very little difference so I'd say if we went up and shored up a couple of positions then we could be comfortably mid table.

If Doyler isnt going to able to do it then we need an experienced thug, someone like Michael Bostwick from Lincoln, or Deegan.

Also, I note that Lincoln had a 19 man squad, which means with FFP you can have fewer, but better players. Having a large squad means we are limiting ourselves quality wise.

No. Not without significant investment.

The team is better than the one got relegated, so in theory it could just about stay up as it was. The striking pair are good enough.

We would need a few more generals in there though, and better players in a few positions. A bit of investment and the right recruitment and we wouldn't do too badly.

My worry is actually getting out of this league first. A bit less nonchalance and I think we could have got an auto spot. Playoffs will be a big ask if we get there.

In other words where ‘Football’ is played more.....

Our defence has recently conceded 4 v Lincoln and 6 v Yeovil; woeful marking and not that much commitment against quite average forward lines. Both burge and O’Brien are always one flap from calamity. Doyle is ageing; putting in good shifts but could he now cut a full season in a higher division? Biamou works hard but can’t score; JCH hasn’t really cut it since being here and do we really think mcnulty will set division one slight? Yes Baylis is a highlight from this season but he alone really. We don’t know yet whether jones and andreu will be back better than ever or lose a yard of pace.
Could we survive in league 1?...possibly but without a major overhaul 1-11 we would be struggling from the off.

On the current squad I’d say we’re a 16th - 24th.

Should we have a magical day at Wembley again we’d need another overhaul of players

Personally I see us remaining in L2, tweaking the current squad and being a real force next year.

No. There are still players in the team who couldn’t cut it last season and as it stands are only able to contribute to us hopefully finishing 7th this, major overhaul needed again if we manage to go up(which I don’t think we will).

With hopefully a couple coming back fit and 4 or 5 additions we could may be make mid table. I don't think the gap between league 2 and 1 is that great. Unlike going up to the Championship or from there to the Premier League.

Quite a few of our squad are Academy players nowhere near the first team.

They have a 25 man squad. Cowley meant they have 19 players to choose from with injuries

If we don't strengthen in all areas we will be relegated. I agree that we are a better team than the one that was relegated last season but we have by no means taken division 4 by storm and there will have to be some serious investment to keep us out of the bottom 6 if we did manage to get promoted.

This squad would be relegated in L1. I will be very surprised if it gets promoted.

I agree that this squad is better than the one that took us down with a whimper and it does have potential to prosper and grow. The problem we’ve had since relegation from the Premier League is that we have started from scratch each and every summer (both squad and manager) after constant disappointment.

If we scrape our way to promotion via the play-offs, Robins main concern is to overcome the persistent inconsistency which has cost us automatic promotion which we have single handedly blown in spectacular fashion. Whatever league we end up in, there has to be a full post-portem into our failings.

The nucleus is there, Jones and Andreu to come back, re-sign Doyle, keep hold of McNulty, Bayliss and Shipley, add a keeper, left back and a winger or 2 and I think we could do very well. All depends on how the next few weeks pans out u guess.

What was Mowbray’s budget? How do you know? He obviously didn’t think it was decent as one of the things he said when he left was “At some stage the owners have got to invest in the football club”.

The problem we've got is how few players stand out. We need pretty much a whole new team to compete in L1 let alone challenge for promotion.

Take the back four as an example. Grimmer, Willis, McDonald, Davies and Stokes. You could replace any one of those with someone better without bringing the defence up to the level required.

How many players have we currently got that anyone would be bothered if they left. Probably Jones, Bayliss, Shipley and McNulty.
