Won’t see the likes this again, the national response to Cyrille Regis’s sudden death will be a one off, had it with George Best a different scenario but I can’t see another. Remember CR retired 25 years ago, was never a pundit and on the telly every week and very much just a midland based footballer mainly at 2 unfashionable clubs too, not a massive bunch of England caps or medals yet his death has received a week long tributes not only from fans of his 4 clubs but clubs, players, pundits and politicians throughout the country, Government and abroad, a minutes applause throughout the Premier League impeccably observed by thousands who never saw him play, truly amazing.

I didn’t realise that Cyrille’s last club was Chester City, where he scored 10 goals in his last season. I was staying near Chester over the weekend, and there was an excellent two page spread in the local paper. He was a hero to their fans. I seem to remember that we sent Chester one of our stands, and I was wondering whether it was there when Cyrille played there, and helped him to feel at home!!

Did he score 5 in a game against Chester?

For those who missed this yesterday

This tribute brought a lump to my throat. I still vividly remember that last minute goal which he headered the rebound from the crossbar against Spurs (4-3) in 86. That is still etched in my memory. The fans went crazy and the the Spurs fans in dismay temporarily invaded the pitch to be pushed back by the police. Great days.

For anyone in Birmingham (early!) tomorrow morning, Cyrille’s cortège will be driving up Priory Road in Edgbaston in order to pass the Priory gym / tennis club and on to Edgbaston Golf club on its way to the (private) service. This is at his wife’s request (he was a member at both and spent a fair bit of time there), in order to allow those that wish to pay their last requests.

Slightly gutted as am a member of the gym where he was a regular and never once saw him there.

Thanks for the memories big man.

R.I.P. Cyrille.

Just in from the football and caught the ITV news coverage. Cyrille highlights played to ‘bring him home’ in the background which looks to have also been sang at the memorial.

Touch emotional after that :(
Yeah that song will do it.
