Cov City Players In Pubs (1 Viewer)

Writing earlier on Dean Emerson and how I saw him in the Rose pub drinking on a few occasions, made me realise I've seen a few more City players drinking in watering holes. Bill Glazier in the casino before a legends day, Dave Bennett in the Rose and Crown pub down the Forum with David Speedie, Regis and Killer in the Craven Arms in Walsgrave, George Hudson in the Mount Pleasant in Walsgrave, and had a drink with Ernie Machin in the Wyken Club,as I used to clean his windows. Do players these days like a few beers in our pubs anymore like players used to do ? By the way I was starstruck seeing Hudson in the Mount, but discovered many an ex player drank in there.

Gary Gillespie used the Wallace a few times when I worked there, saw nuddy using the phone box outside it on a few occasions, rumour has it that he was knocking off a lady who lived on Wallace rd and another in hardy rd.

Met Noel whelan in the nugget once he made a fuss of my nephew who had a city shirt with Whelans name on the back he seemed a decent enough bloke.

Dean Emerson played Sunday football for one of the Cov pubs, possibly the Rose as mentioned above, but I'm not exactly sure. I was playing for the Cherry Tree at the time (very early 2000's) and came up against him in the middle. Bugger me, his first touch was amazing and you could tell he was class. Unfortunately he scythed me down after I went past him a few times (more due to youthful pace than any kind of ability) and he was sent off, and if I recall he was later sent from the touchline in the same match.

My dad once played pool in Foleshill against a CCFC legend of the late 80's who I won't name, apparently the player was "pissed out of his skull" and could barely stand!

I had a friend and work colleague who bumped into Laurent Delorge in Jumpin Jaks and proceeded to give him an extremely drunken lecture on "getting stuck in" and various other shortcomings in his game, complete with exaggerated kicking actions, at about 2am one weekend. Delorge left us within weeks...

Bennett still pops in the Devon from time to time and Mickey Gynn and a couple of others were in there last year and my mate got a picture with them.

Hartson and Palmer in Jumping Jacks just before Hartson went to Celtic. That night was eventful shall we say.

To be fair it feels like most of our first team aren't legally old enough to be in a boozer yet......

I saw George Curtis in his chippy on Walsgrave Road, the Chip Butty one Friday night. A few of us had been in the Walsgrave pub so were a bit pissed. He was fine though and had a bit of banter with us. His nickname was Iron Man so I heard he took no crap in there !

Saw Bennett fairly recently in the Albany club and even more recently I'm fairly sure I saw Gynn in the Burnt Post.

Used to keep bumping into players in the late 80's clubbing and then in the Indian in Hillfields afterwards. Was unusual not to bump into them.

My dad told me that Ian Gibson had a reputation for liking a drink. And it was well known that Bill Glazier often sank ten pints on a Friday night before the next days match. If it was true it never affected him. Bryan Robson it was said drank like a fish at WBA and Man Utd too, but never showed signs of a hangover.

Micky Quinn gave me a pint of Lager in the Pippin one sunday night when I'd been on an all dayer. Used to see a fair few players in the Rose and Crown after saturday games. The one who sticks out the most is Barry Venison in his slip on's, White socks and Shiney suit and long flowing mullet. It was a thing of true beauty.
Used to see Benno in Fatty Arbuckles quite a bit too.

We used to have a player before my time called Snape, can't remember his first name.
I was talking to his son who said his dad would have 5 or 6 pints and go to the game on the bus.
He said it wouldn't be unusual for him to feign injury so he could lie on the pitch, pull his shorts to one side and have a piss on the pitch,
No idea if true but it gave me a laugh.

Snape ran the Old Crown pub on Windmill Road. Heard he was a character so it was probably true.

George Best it was said was that hungover he left at half time ran over to a nearby pub and knocked back a drink to settle him down. He came back and played a blinder.

Mickey Quinn up The Craftsmen coz he made a special guest appearance.

Mickey Gynn in The Stag, Bishop street a few times as he used to work across the road in the sorting office. Big Jim Holton too, who ran The Stag!

Dave Bennett in several boozers in Nuneaton.

David Speedie in the Park Lane nightclub casino, he was a bit of a prick tbh.

I see a lot of cov players the younger ones in the Holyhead including Cyrus Christie who still comes back to cov.

Saw arun gunnarson play bowling at the mega bowl one evening. Random.

I played blackjack at the same table with Andy thorn at the casino and tbf he was a great laugh and was well spoken. (It was early in the night)

Met Carl baker down the gym one time. Came across like a fans hero and well respected although I know we take the piss.

I met Aron Gunnarsson in the Colly when he was here a few years back. Saw Jodi Jones in Scholars a month or so ago too.

Bumped into James Maddison at the City Arms this summer I think it was too.
