Unexpected trip to Forest Green (1 Viewer)

  • Apologies for the slightly misleading title, but yesterday I had to make an unexpected trek to Bath (homebase) to collect some parts to complete son'e bedroom decoration. 6 and a half hour round trip to find that they only had 2 of the 3 'promised' parts Grrrrrrrr..
....anyway, as I neared Stroud, I suddenly spotted that I was going to have to drive through Nailsworth, home of Forest Green Rovers. What an eye opener. It's like middle earth / hobbit land with the odd quaint coffee shop and pub, together with hills and green galore. Can't believe what your average football fan from a built up concrete area is going to make of it. It felt really surreal. Didn't detour to have a look at the ground - will save that pleasure, but wondered what others have made of Nailsworth (of those who have been)

Ha hobbit land, careful my feet aren't that hairy. Live about 10mins from The New Lawn. To be fair they have hosted some big teams up there. Derby County in the cup was a full house and they coped

Not been but others say it's 'quaint'
Catering is reportedly more like you would get at a hippie pop festival than a football ground

Hang on....you did a 6.5 hour round trip to Homebase???

Yep - lad's bedroom floor needed 3 more boxes of 'tiles' to finish. Warwick branch confirmed with Bath (nearest place that had 3 left as the line had been discontinued) that they did actually have 3. When I got there, after 4 hours of intermittent traffic jams, 1 of the 3 was the wrong type (hence GGrrrr - we've since used alternative for under wardrobe, bed etc - not great, but needs must!). Journey back much quicker (2 and a half including 15 mins in McDs) The things we do for the love of a child (and to avoid the wrath of a good woman!)

Tip - avoid driving in Bath City/town centre at about 5.30pm - not good!

I live 5 minutes from Nailsworth. It's quite nice but not a lot to keep you there for long. There are some decent places to eat though, and there's always the potential danger of running over a cow if you're driving across Minchinhampton Common too. The New Lawn is a decent little ground too but parking is a pain in the arse.

I think the plan will be to go to Stroud, drink there and then get taxis to Nailsworth and back.

I've been there for a game as a neutral.

I think the town itself has enough nice pubs, chip shop, cafes etc, to cope with a ccfc invasion, unless we are bang on for promotion and looking at taking more than say 2000 there (I don't think the away end holds that many anyway).

The ground is in a strange location, perhaps 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile uphill on quite an innocuous looking road out of town, and pretty much hidden away from the road. There is one of those new housing estates not too far across the road, I parked in there, but that may well be an issue with a big following.

The ground itself is pleasant enough, albeit experienced on a hot sunny day. Terraced and covered at each end, quite a good main stand. Yes the catering is not typical football fare, being no meat whatsoever, but they sell beer so I expect most city fans will be happy.

Will probably be one of the 'nicer' grounds in the league, however I'll much prefer the more traditional grounds we visit.

There's a reasonable clubhouse at the ground, fairly basic, think Notts County or Wycombe but slightly more pleasant and inviting. Whether that would be available for away fans with a large following I don't know.

It's a hell of a walk up that hill. !! Not much parking nearby but can use Park and Ride in the Town. Been to the New Lawn so many times, I'm Sky Blues always Number One but had a soft spot for FGR since I saw them at Nuneaton Bor' in the old Southern League. Enjoyed their Wembley promotion final almost as good as the Checkatrade final. Yeah..... get the pie and chips in the Town first........

I'm down Burnham this weekend. Came for the Weston's air Show! That traffic yesterday was rediculous! :emoji_rage:

Hippie pop festival?
I much prefer what you get at the discotheque thanks grandad.
Yep I am a granddad so it's a fair cop
There are plenty of outdoor events these days that cater to all sorts of music fans not just the 'right on' merchants
And then there are those that are for the hippie crowd - no meat on sale, lectures by Lily Allen, Steve Coogan, politicians etc.
That's FGR

Sounds great, Steve coogan, lily Allen and watch City dominate the game and lose 1-0. Where do I sign up

Funnily enough I have loved most of Steve Coogan's work and was surprised he was the type of guy who wanted to spout his opinions
I thought that was what his act was about - taking the piss out of such behaviour

To be fair he seems more comfortable playing Alan Partridge than he does being himself.

I only hung around for the first half of the show today. Only wanted to see the red arrows again really and they were on earlier today which was a bonus.

I'd normally stay for the two days but made the mistake of not putting any sun lotion on yesterday so got a tad burnt! Take of me t shirt and looks like I still have one on :emoji_joy:

I know someone from work who knows Lily Allen's mum. Their family is incredibly posh and upper class. Lily's just another case of bourgeois socialist from what I can see.

Another celeb who has strong opinions, but doesn't realise that nobody is interested in hearing it!

I went there last season - I live about 40 minutes away and a good mate is a Lincoln fan so we went over for the match. Decent pre-match pint and the game was good - Lincoln scored 3 in 15 to win 3-2. So tight behind the goal you could tap the goalie on the shoulder. Had a good meal in the pub after the (long) walk down into town.
