I ran the line in a game a few years back for my old under 15's game, I'd stopped playing but used to go and watch.

Anyway last min our lot 2-1 down
We get a corner keeper goes up, they counter we have 1 player back anyway breaks forward our player is in our half edge of centre circle their player 2 yards the 'right' side of him but in our half, balls played I flagged offside, proper ref didn't give it.

Yet I was convinced at the time and remonstrated with the ref after that it was off as you have to have 2 players playing the player on so in effect our defender was the 'keeper' so their player WAS offside!!

The same bloke from the beginning of the season I had to correct about offside was at it again tonight screaming at Burge to pick up a throw in. I turned round and politely told him the rule has changed.

A direct free kick in your own goal is a goal

No its not

the law states:

BALL ENTERS THE GOAL
  • if a direct free kick is kicked directly into the opponents’ goal, a goal is awarded
  • if an indirect free kick is kicked directly into the opponents’ goal, a goal kick is awarded
  • if a direct or indirect free kick is kicked directly into the team’s own goal, a corner kick is awarded

Wow face palm

To be fair when I used to ref I reckon I would have known lol. I did once panic in a game when the back pass to the keeper rule changed every season and gave an indirect free kick. The rule was 6 steps but only if the keeper held the ball for the 6 steps. The keeper caught the ball then dropped it and in my head I was counting the steps and gave the free kick even though he didn't pick it up. Everyone was fuming. When I checked the change of rule I felt terrible.

The other funny one was when I forgot to start all my watches and so decided to wait until the crowd started saying come on ref blow up. Well they did but only after about 15 mins of added time lol!!

Good days.

I now feel bad for making a wise crack earlier. Sorry whoever it was I laughed at not knowing the offside rule from a goal kick
