Very, fans talk about our best ever players and Tommy Hutchison normally gets that accalaid but believe me Gibson pushes him very hard for that honour. Gibbo was simply brilliant, his type of player isn't around now he could pass a ball 60 yards to a team mates toe, turn on a tanner, scored goals too. Kept getting niggly injuries which may have deterred him from the "big" boys snapping him up. Sad day, but superb memories of a true Sky Blue superstar

Just saw this thread and when did he pass away ? One of my favourite ever players. In fact I was looking at an old book the other day,and it had him holding a trophy and another one when he scored a great goal verses Cardiff. I was there that game and it was a cracker. Another one gone sadly.

As a kid, I had my bedroom wall covered with black-and-white photos of the Sky Blues, all cut out of Telegraph or the “Pink”. The one that sticks in my mind the most was of Ian Gibson volleying the ball – somehow it summed up the whole glorious era of the sixties. RIP Gibbo.

We wouldn't have been promoted in 1967 without him, a brilliant signing by JH as he complimented our team at the time superbly

Very sad news. Ian Gibson was genuinely one of City's all-time greats. He was eclipsed only by Tommy Hutchison in the time I've watched City, and had he managed to stay clear of injury he certainly had the ability to rank alongside Hutch. We have lost a legend.

A little bit before my time but my dad said he was a great player and was part of the team that got us to the big time under Jimmy Hill. Condolences to his family.

My favourite Coventry City player of all time. Gibbo was an important part of both Jimmy Hill's 'promotion' team and the Noel Cantwell team that qualified for Europe by finishing 6th in 1969-70. This remains our highest finish in the top tier. In my view the 1969-70 squad ranks alongside both the Sillett/Curtis FA Cup-winning squad and Strachan's expansive late 90s teams. Although it's nearly half a century ago, I still have visions of Gibbo and Willie Carr controlling the Highfield Road midfield, spraying pinpoint passes to either flank in an exciting 442 formation. Glazier, Coop, Cattlin, Clements, Barry, Blockley, Carr, Gibson, Martin, O'Rourke and Hunt - what would that squad be worth in today's money I wonder?Condolences to friends and family. R.I.P. Gibbo was sheer class. His distribution was awesome. He could flight a ball over 50 yards into a players path, allowing the player to take control without breaking his stride. If he was playing today....he would be valued in the tens of millions!

Very sad to hear of Gibbo's passing, he was a real magician with the ball at his feet and a legend of my youth. The 60's was a great time to be a skyblues fan and Gibbo was a real hero. RIP and don't ever tuck that shirt in.
