    Things that annoy you

They were claiming on the BBC yesterday that the hot weather in July 2022 "caused 3000 excess deaths" in the UK. I think they were forgetting that we were still in the grip of the pandemic at that stage - i can't help thinking that may have been a causative link!

    FIFA Club World Cup 2025

We were fortunate to be in Buenos Aires earlier in the year, and that description fits the entire neighbourhood of La Boca! Absolutely bonkers and truly football crazy. EVERYTHING is blue and yellow. Even the Coke adverts, umbrellas, etc are black and white rather than red (the colours of River...

    Israel - Palestinian Conflict

I absolutely take your point, but the whole POINT of BBC Verify is that they have checked their bloody facts! It's the fact-checking arm of BBC News! I would prefer to believe first-hand accounts from people i think are trustworthy, such as John Simpson, BBC World Affairs Editor, who has been on...

    Israel - Palestinian Conflict

Just a point of information - calling an Iranian "an Arab" is about as insulting to them as you can get - they are Persian! You are conflating the terms Arab and Muslim, i suspect. The Arabs never conquered Persia.

    FIFA Club World Cup 2025

Nope - didn't even know it was on! Only rarely watch Prem games, so certainly not bothered about this money-making exercise for FIFA.

Thanks for your insight. I've watched enough episodes of Air Crash Investigation to know that no stone will be left unturned, and the data they can get out of the FDR and CVR is so comprehensive. The answer will come pretty quickly, i would imagine. Problem is the Americans will want to be...

    Israel - Palestinian Conflict

This is absolutely the issue here. And the fact that Trump tore up Obama's negotiated deal. I don't know who is the looser cannon out of Trump and Netanyahu at the moment.

Not Trump-related: Boeing does appear to have some kind of cloak of invincibility when it comes to airline safety. There have been so many losses of 737s in particular, and yet they haven't been grounded (other than the Max range, which are still dodgy, in my opinion). Concorde had ONE accident...

I wouldn't be very happy flying in Indonesia, where short-haul island-hopping is common, the "airlines" are very low-budget operations and the terrain of the aerodromes is terrifying, leading to high numbers of accidents.

air india plane to gatwick crashed

I'm not sure there have, Tom. This is only the third incident in 2025 involving a plane bigger than about 20 seats. Of the previous two, one crashed on landing and the other caught fire before take-off. There are others that you can't mitigate for, like the one in Washington DC, where a...

air india plane to gatwick crashed

Seen a video which shows the plane gliding down to ground level rather than in a steep decline, suggesting engine failure rather than a stall. You can only imagine how hard the pilots were fighting to keep it in the air to avoid buildings, etc. Grim!

Stuff coming out of India saying that the purchase by Tata in 2022 has been followed by numerous cost-cutting measures (which *could* involve maintenance and safety checks, of course). Owned 75% by Tata and 25% Singapore Airlines. Interesting that Singapore use Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines to...
