Surprised by the positive feedback. Normally happy to see refs let the game flow but thought he let too much go and many decisions seemed random. Players on both sides were very frustrated with him.

It’s so frustrating so often EMC concedes fouls just for standing his ground and being strong yet CB’s can just employ wrestling moves and get away with it.

Yes and no. You’ve answered your own question in that it averages out. It’s not perfect because it can’t account for every specific, you mention position of defenders, but it’s based on historical data it’s representative.

See this is the root cause of your skepticism, you don’t understand how they are generated but briefly no, they are not arbitrary. xG is based on the statistical likelihood of scoring based on the position on the pitch the shot was taken. A shot within a few yards of goal has a high xG, 0.7...

What’s really impressive is that he was identified and brought in as it wasn’t a position where there was a consensus we needed a player.

Having a Quick Look at the xG for their last few games they’ve overperformed it while oppo has been wasteful, so rings true that they’ve been a bit lucky. For much of the season we’ve had a high xG and low xGA so are more deserving of the position we are in.
