City's aim for 'Ryton training ground sale' blocked (1 Viewer)

A NEW attempt by Coventry City Football Club to sell off its training ground in Ryton for houses has been blocked.

The Observer can reveal the proposal was discussed by top brass at the council and club officials at a meeting late last year as the club investigates ways of funding a new stadium and academy.

It was a plan first mooted almost ten years ago in 2005 when then chairman Mike McGinnity made tentative enquiries over changing the status of the land from protected green belt to free it up for redevelopment.

But it faced opposition from the parish council and the borough council, which has planning control over the site, and went no further.

Speaking to us this week borough council leader Craig Humphrey confirmed the club had floated the idea again.

"To pay for whatever they want to do they proposed a trade off of housing on their current site in Ryton which is green belt and that is what is not acceptable to us," he said.

"If they want to come to Rugby with proposals for locations for a stadium or training complex then great, we're happy to talk but there is always a trade off and the trade off was they wanted to build on Ryton.

"That land is not within our Core Strategy and we said to them that it was unacceptable."

A supporters' forum was held late last week to discuss the club's new stadium proposals with no return to the Ricoh looking imminently likely.

The club has declined to comment on the meeting with Rugby council and rumours about possible locations for the stadium which have previously included the Brandon speedway stadium, also inside Rugby's boundary.

I think it is that the last remaining CCFC fan alive that was registered as "giving an ounce of shit" about this debacle has today changed status to being "generally indifferent"

To be fair... if the end result was a stadium that didn't need a massive amount of finance then it kinda makes alot of sense. Rugby have said no... move on... it hardly seems like a disheartening legal wrangle but what do I know...

Selling a fixed asset to fund a stadium worked out well last time didn't it?

it isn't the disheartening legal wrangle, 4th poster down is the person writing the article and he says its not about this.

I thought the FL said they'd seen proof of funds to build a new ground?
Why then are they trying to raise funds by selling Ryton?

HArdly anything new is it? McGinnity tried to do it and Jimmy Hill actually did sell part of it decades ago.

So, basically, Sisu are trying to sell off land that Jimmy Hill orchestrated for us and Derrick Robbins paid for in the 1960s.
But they constantly tell us they've got loads of money and can finance this farce. Yeah right. They've got twitchy investor money & they won't be happy.
As I've said many times before....bastards.

Thought SISU had already borrowed heavily against Ryton with a big mortgage, wonder how much the net sale would generate - not that much I would imagine.

I know, lets sell it and rent it back to train on???? then we can stop paying the rent and sue any one who says we should start paying again.....

You would have to be clinically mad to deal with these morons.

Unfortunately there have not been any clouds thick enough for sisu to start building
there pie in the sky stadium.

It will not be in Coventry so it will not require things like spectator seating or F & B facilities.
This should enable sisu to find a pocket handkerchief size piece of ground for their
ludicrous development.

This is the bit that I find curious

"To pay for whatever they want to do they proposed a trade off of housing on their current site in Ryton which is green belt and that is what is not acceptable to us," he said.

I assume they mean like a site swap because I cant see there being enough cash in it to pay for a stadium and training ground to be built...... buying the actual site perhaps yes

If the new stadium is supposedly going to also home the training and academy. Why would they keep it??

Exactly the same argument that led to HR being sold before the Ricoh was built.

So this was the other council that Mr Fisher had held positive talks with. SISU said if you let us sell the land to build houses we will build a new stadium in your borough

They said no.
Interesting slant on positive.I guess he was careful with his wording. They can see the benefits of the stadium etc etc Without actually saying they are up for it. Sneeky slimball

Shows SISU do not have the cash.
Wonder if they had sold the land for housing would they have actually built the stadium?

What would you get for selling Ryton?

SISU re-mortgaged Ryton about 6 years ago for (I think £5m)...I'm not Grenduffy, so don't take that figure as fact.

Not the worst idea ever. Once worked at a club whose stadium was (and still is town centre) and their owners plan was;

1. To sell the stadium (which they did not own so would have to buy it first) for housing.
2. To sell their local rivals ground (which they did not own so would have to buy it first) for housing.
3. Build a new ground for their local rivals.
4. Build a new stadium for themselves.

It may come as a shock to you SISU boys, but the plan failed and the owners legged it pulling all funding and the club went into turmoil until we managed to sell to a more switched on business man who having agreed a CVA now has them on an even footing, albeit at a lower level.

Football is surrounded by clowns and SISU may be one of the biggest jokes we have ever seen in the game, but not the only ones!

Could you sell Ryton for housing. On the pretence you will build a new stadium in the Rugby area. Pocket that money

Ideally get the Ricoh and ACL and the Higgs centre on the cheap. (Or a long term dirt cheap rent for the Ricoh, but buy ACL and Higgs centre with the money from Ryton)

Sell the lot a football club, its stadium and its academy / training facility

If Ryton was sold don't ARVO have a charge on it before money would reach the club anyway?

There is nothing wrong with ensuring your assets are worth the maximum.
It is already known that Ryton has limited life left, either moving to the new stadium or Brandon.

Good business to have these discussions.

I thought Ryton was fairly built up these days, with housing towards the village, GKN works to the rear and the sports centre.
