What can Thorn do differently, assuming he can't bring anyone in? (2 Viewers)

Change the system?

Go 4-4-2 and PRAY Mcsheffrey delivers goals in a position he himself is not keen on playing? Or drop him for another youngster maybe? Play Platt? Change the coaching? Beat Eastwood till he is fit?

Straw's clutching?

Deckchair's, titanic?

Tinker with the system. That's about it.

Suppose he could throw down the gauntlet and drop several players and then ask the Football League if we can play a game with 7 or 8 men per game.

Thats kind of down to him as manager Jimmy.

What everyone fails to comment on is that AT took the job, knowing the situation and the tossers he would be working for.

He must have felt he could bring something to the party, reluctant to make him too much of a martyr

Not strictly true. You're forgetting that he was told he would have the same budget as AB.

I'd stick with the diamond formation. I didn't go on Saturday, but heard he'd started with the 433 formation that had finished the game against Blackpool. The diamond is our plan a then change it if/when it doesn't work. We haven't got the players to play 442, just imagine bell and mcsheffery out wide..'shudder'.

I would have thought he had been around long enough in the club to take that with a pinch of salt but fair point

And if they don't respond he can drop them from the team and replace them with .. errm ...... errr .... errrm ..... ...... who exactly?

you see the longer this conversation goes on the more I have 2 ideas in my head.

1/ If he can have no effect on our success or otherwise because his hands are so tied (as hinted on here) then walk away. Whats the point? I couldn't do a job if there was really no point in me being there.

2/ If he is going to be manager then accept that he will get criticism (up to a point) when things aren't going well

I would be the (1) camp for sure.

I would try and get out with my reputation untarnished if possible.

Suits our board perfectly this scenario. Things continue to go badly then they can say they gave Thorn a go and that the fans all supported this but that he just wasn't up to it. That would then give them a few more months to deflect some of the flak with more false promises to a new manager until it then became obvious that bloke has his hands tied too.

Drop ROD for a start, give Cody a run of games. Maybe view games of the opposition and try and look for weaknesses and use them to our advantage. Basically that’s what been a manager is all about. Trying to find flaws in opposition and work best to play against them

who would be a less untried manager than AT? I reckon they are lining up either Eakin, Linnel or Sky Blue Sam

the thing for AT tho is that he hasn't got a track record as a manger so won't be getting lots of job offers. At the moment he is, to a large extent, in a good position in that if the team starts winning he will be seen as a miricle worker, if they don't it's generally accepted he's being let down by SISU.

nail on the head mate, he is in a lucky position in that respect

my team and formation murphy
Christie Keogh Wood(if fit) Hussey/Cranie
Bell Clingan Bigi McSheff
Eastwood
Juke Cody
My only problem is left back, but i would persevere with Hussey initialy, but would get him off for one on one defeending class with an goos ex pro like Nigel Winterburn etc

I would tell Bell and Mc Sheffrey that if they don't get the ball in the box or try to get the ball in the box everytime they get the ball, i will bring them off, wether its the 1st half or 2nd half
I would tell Juke that if the oppositions centre halfs come off the pich at full time without black eyes or blood dripping from a head wound, i will stop his money.
I would tell Clingan that a sideways ball is a cop out
I would tell Freddy he's the best player i've ever seen, and all he needs to do is prove it to the fans.
I would tell Cody its now time to prove why he was in a Prem team, and to show us fans what he can do, and under half a dozen shots on goal a game is not acceptable
I would tell Keogh that he is'nt Booby Moore and to concentrate on the basic's of defending, that is to stop the other team scoring.
I would tell Bigi that the best ball in football is and under ten yards and to feet.
If this all does'nt work, i would tell myself that it's time to resign.

Are we allowed to field 12 players or are you hoping no one notices, which is actually a good bet the way some of them have been playing.

can bigi, clingan and thomas play in the same midfield? Id like to see it.

1 anchor man,2 central midfeilders and 1 attacking who has license to just attack attack attack be it baker, mcsheff or bell, with 1 postiion for 3 maybe you can keep rotating them cos there so lazy sometimes

What a load of crap....

Do you really think its that simple?

Its OK that formation because we have applied for league dispensation asking for Bell and Sheff together to only count as one player as they only ever contribute for half a game

There are a few ideas on here AT could try but would they really have much impact? For example playing unfit Eastwood. Might work, probably won't.

And what happens when just one of our better player's get injured? Imagine no Jukebox or no Mcsheffrey. We will then be back to square 1 anyway.

For what it's worth I think Thorn is the kind of manager that will try out some of the idea's mentioned here. But do we really expect results?

All Thorn can do is continue to pray that the one of the weakest squads in the championship can get the pitbull mentality and keep on fighting. It's a bit like asking kids on BMX bikes to beat the Cov Bees....we all know it's unlikely but I guess their engines could konk out.

We have more than one player per position. If AT thought that his first choice wasn't trying, surely he could reasonably expect the less gifted second choice to give everything he's got. And it would serve as an example to all.

Yes i do think it's that simple.Footballers are not the cleverest bunch and to complicate things further would totally confuse them.Simple instructions because football is really a simple game, you pass the ball to someone in the same colour shirt as you, then when you get to the net thingy hanging from the N shaped thingy you shoot and try and get the ball in it.When you have'nt got the ball you've got to try and get it back off the one's NOT in the same colour shirts as you.
Come On my post was done with a hint of irony, or did it confuse you a bit.

4-3-3
------------Murphy
Keogh---Mcpake--Wood--Cranie
-------Gael---Clingan--Deegan
--Baker-------Juke------------Mcsheffrey
I think that team would give us a better balance of youth/experience.

Gael and Clingan to try and dominate midfield with Deegan breaking forward. Baker and Mcsheffrey to play high and narrow as a front 3 with Juke but sometimes spread wide to give the full backs and midfield passing options. Juke to stay central and be the focal point of attack.
Play at a faster tempo and try and get the ball to our most creative players as quickly and safely as possible, I want Coventry City to play good football, possession is useless in your own half. I want Coventry City to play good football in the oppositions half not there own.

I agree. I cannot understand the fan's apparant adulation for Thorn, he knew the score and knew no other cub would give him the paltform to be a manager.

One decision that makes me really perplexed is if he new the limited budget would allow him only 3 signings why make 2 goalkeepers? He could have kept the youth team guy last year as a reserve. Even worse his only outfield signing cannot even get in the team!

so why are we all bothering then really.

I think some people are praying a change of manager might produce a miracle. But given we have no money, a small squad and a lack of senior players then there's a chance that a new manager would do worse

I don't want a new manager just that the current manager not be immune from criticism just because of SISU

Can't you see how the first part explains the second? He thought he had a bigger budget, so he started by getting the GK position sorted out with full intention of signing other players (and we were linked with plenty). Then he found out he'd been lied to. As have we, and indeed still are being. Loan players? Money to spend in the window before sales? Wages of King/Aron/Westwood offers? Same budget as last season? The wages of Carsley, Osbourne, McIndoe, Doyle, etc?

If you think he "knew the score", you obviously didn't see his body language at the fans forum!

Not immune to criticism at all, but when he comes in for heavy criticism the obvious response is to refer to the reality of the circumstances. Which is something I'm amazed some can't see;we have an understrength squad and are heavily reliant on kids who aren't ready. TBH, I wouldn't be surprised if the wages of all the departed players from last season (including Doyle) amounts to more than the entire present first team squad.
