Now that promotion has been secured my thoughts are now turning to our squad for next season
Realistically how many of the current team are good enough
Personally I think we need a couple of strikers to start with

We do in an ideal world.
But how much would it cost to upgrade both?
Don’t care how much of that budget it is but tweedle Dee and tweedle dum are the most bang average in their positions in our squad. Not to mention Thomas Asante who looks back to his ineffective best. Sounds incredibly harsh but they just wouldn’t cut it against the Prem defences.

None of them in reality. If we find PL quality we can afford we should buy it. The rest will be place holders.

I would argue that defence is by far our priority though. We’ve achieved this season by scoring loads, which we almost certainly won’t do next year. Our defensive record is mostly down to dominating games not having good defenders and our GK has prevented an awful lot and likely won’t be here.

People slag our strikers off but wright generally is one of the championships best strikers over the 3 seasons hes had with us with 44 goals in 109 games

People need to stop obsessing with his body language because thats obviously who he is

Its really not an easy thing to find 20 goals in the league .

Im not sure what the club will do with simms and asante but youd imagine they will take wright to the premier league

We’ll defo get a GK, 2 CBs, a LB, 1 or 2 CMs, a striker and a winger

I think 7/8 sounds about right to not disrupt the rythm, with 3 being experienced heads like Adam Webster, Chris Wood, Will Hughes, means one per area, who can aid the transition of the rest of the team and help bed in new players who havent played PL football before and be the older heads to look up to to replace the likes of Bidwell, Allen etc

Wright has a place as a squad player but he isn’t your starting striker in the PL.

When you play with the demeanor of Wright they'll always be question marks about attitude, I can think of several similar players who got the same questions asked about them including one who was probably world class, Berbatov.

But putting that to one side what is beyond dispute is the fact he has spells where it just doesn't happen for him and he's virtually a passenger. That's going to be problematic in the PL.

I still think he'll be here because I can't see us replacing both strikers and he's clearly better than Simms, and how much does a 10-15 PL goals a season striker cost these days? I'd imagine it's not cheap

Lampard has worked wonders getting us where we are with the 2 strikers we have . None of them should be anywhere near our squad next season.

I doubt BTA will stay either so we need a couple of strikers

Well only 3 players have 15 goals at this point in the prem

The reality is 50% of the current squad will be moved on and a lot of our current 1st 11 will become squad players as better new players come in.

Our current team has struggled against the 2 parachute teams in Ipswich and Saints as an example this season and they were guff in the PL. So it shows how much work is needed. Annoyingly if they both go up again they’ve got a better squad foundation to work off with PL experience.

The gap to the PL is huge and we’ve got to accept that. This summer will come down to how much Doug will gamble with the £200m like Sunderland did. We will need to be smart and I like what Sunderland did with bringing in Xhaka as an example as that experienced European CM. Hopefully there’s a smart marquee signing like that for us.

I dont think in either game we struggled against saints for what its worth

Ipswich sure

I imagine we will have 5 -7 new starters

I was thinking a similar number, can't see us signing a whole new team.
Hopefully there's a few who people think aren't good enough who will thrive at that level.

I think anyone who expects us to replace 50% of the starting lineup is going to be disappointed this summer. Of the current squad, I’d expect the following to start next season playing regularly:

JDS
MVE
Thomas
Grimes
Onyeka
Rudoni
Sakamoto
Mason-Clarke

I’d also expect these to be playing regularly/on the bench:

Dovin
Kitching
Latibeaudiere
Torp
Eccles
Simms
KKH

I think we will ship out:
Wright
BTA
Woolfenden
Allen
Wilson
Bidwell
Brau

And obviously we won’t be going in for Esse or Yang

Another question is what type of team will we be? Think Lampard will be pragmatic, I'm sure there is an interview somewhere where he talked about taking the Everton job and quickly realising that the players he'd inherited wouldn't be able to do what he'd initially asked i.e. play like Chelsea. He joined Everton on the last day of the transfer window, so was stuck with what he had. Think that experience will stand him and therefore us in good stead, especially since we will have been working behind the scenes on a promotion scenario since the first play off campaign.

Lampard's results with Everton that year making interesting reading:

So we’re going to move 7 on but only 3 of their replacements (and that’s including a keeper!!) are going to be good enough to start regularly? Nah, nonsense.

If we’re signing 8 players then at least 6 of them will be straight in as regular starters.

Let’s see. Doug said on the radio that we aren’t following the Sunderland model of wholesale change. 🤷 Also, it’s a squad game. Especially in the premier league. Playing regularly doesn’t mean that there aren’t other players starting regularly too.

Everyone focuses on that but in the same interview he also said the Burnley way of going up and down doesn’t work either.

Rushworth not ours though.
Rushworth has to be first signing besides FTT who I believe is an obligation to buy anyway. Hope we can sell our strikers to the highest bidder from those going down to the Championship or top tier Championship teams. I’m sure there’d be interest in them. Should help raise funds for the summer.

The good thing with Wright is Coventry probably don't have to sell him and he can provide cover. However if the price is right for him, sell him on and increase the transfer budget.

You would think they have a list of targets since January.
