I always preferred Lampard to Gerrard and im not just saying that as he's our manager. Seriously good player in a Seriously good era.

For me, if you're 4-0 down at half time in a European cup final then Gerrard is your man, if you're looking for something a bit less gung ho, I'd go Lampard.

I rated Gerrard over Lampard but it was close. For me, out of the 2, Gerrard had it all. lamps was a better goal scorer but Gerrard had the entire package of a CM

I preferred Gerrard but hated it getting reduced to an either/or debate. Both were unbelievable players. Lampard was supremely consistent and just never got injured. His stats for goals and appearances are mental.

He was awesome. My favourite player of his generation outside of Cov players of course. On the whole was better Gerard or Lampard I’d argue that it was Lampard. Mainly because he always turned up and he worked hard on improving his game to get to the standard he did. You could argue that Gerard was the most talented but I always felt his was a wasted talent on how much better he could have been. Don’t get me wrong Gerard was a great player but I always felt he arrived with so much natural talent that he often left work rate and consistency behind. On his day Gerard was the better player, FA Cup final against West Ham I think is one of the best performances I’ve personally ever seen from a player but he never brought it every week for my money whereas Lamps always did. Stepping into an England shirt too, I’m struggling to think of one outstanding performance from Gerard other than the Germany away game under Erickson, Lamps on the other hand was a man of the match contender every time he pulled the shirt on.

Lampard was an incredible player, as was Gerrard, but for me Scholes was the best of that generation. If he'd been Spanish the national team would have built the team around him, as we had Lampard and Gerrard he got shunted out in the left wing.

Scholes was a more complete midfielder than either of them which is why he got shunted around in the national side. All 3 terrific players but ginger solidarity and all that.

England were too shackled to 4-4-2 during the ‘golden generation’. You even had Joe Cole playing LW often, same with Gerrard in 2010.

Lampard and Gerrard were just as good as Scholes in their own ways imo. It’s like comparing Xavi and Iniesta, Xavi had the vision and could dictate games but Iniesta was ‘clutch’ and always seemed to score in big games.

I think with Lampard/Gerrard/Scholes it's something that comes down to personal preference. In my case I'm just a bit more biased towards that Man Utd side of the mid-late 90s and early 2000s than I am Gerrard's Liverpool which failed to win league titles and Lampard's Chelsea because, well, nobody liked them when they came onto the scene.

All of them were among the very best for their position in their generation though. In their prime I would put any of them in the current England side over anyone we have available today.

2002 WC and 2004 Euros were the best chances for silverware. The former ended by a freak goal and the latter we got robbed by a terrible refereeing decision against the hosts.

2002 we really should have won the Brazil game iirc, and they were up against an over the hill German team in the final. As good an opportunity for winning the tournament as we've had probably until 2018.

I'm another one that preferred him to Gerrard even before being our manager, I reckon there would be old posts to confirm that.

I think Lampard was the best goalscoring midfielder of his generation and any other nation would have build the team around him. If we weren't stuck in 4-4-2 still he'd have been a perfect 10 and succeeded way more for England.

Gerrard definitely unbalanced that team by doing too much, which he learned by dragging a poor Liverpool around on his own back. It disrupted Lampard for England though.

Carrick was the missing piece of the England midfield, sublime footballer that even now is still massively underrated.

Scholes was the best of the 3, but I always preferred Gerrard. If you put either Scholes or Lampard into that Liverpool midfielder, neither would have shined like Gerrard did.
