Grimes was carrying the ball well. Stoke never seemed to be organised enough to track him surging from defence through their forward line, then he usually found a decent pass.

Rudi MOM for me.

Fair play to Lampard for sticking with him when he was pony for a few weeks. Worth it to see the levels now. His work rate has been off the scale the past few games and there was some footwork in the second half I want to rewatch.

Lati would be my next best. Some really lovely and calm touches. He still doesn’t seem like a CB to me, I don’t know why but he’s been superb.

Jay Dasilva was really great yesterday. His footwork is better than anyone else. His cross for the goal was superb. He really has become a good plyer over the last year or so. I think some people find it hard to change their views on him but I think he is a key player for us.

I wish Milan looked forwards half as much as Dasilva does. Quite rare for Dasilva to just knock it back to the centre back. I do think having Grimes and not having Thomas that side helps but van Ewijk could definitely do more on the ball.

genuinely don’t see how so many people are giving Rudoni MOM, other than the goal I don’t think he was stand out, and definitely nowhere near as good as JDS, EMC, FTT….

he wasn’t bad, but there were a number of players far better
I also thought he was very poor for their goal...he is the front defender and should have been attacking the ball in from the corner...needs to watch some footage from Alan shearer back in the day !!

Torp frustrates the life out of me. He genuinely hides in games and plays the safe, easy option every time.

As others say he spent half the time of the pitch behind our cbs. I think he's gone backwards (literally) as the season has gone on.

But then he tracks back and does a match winning last ditch tackle. So what do we do with Mr Torp!?

Rushworth - 7 - nothing to do
MvE - 6 - solid defensively, thought he avoided playing progressive passes a few times to the RW
Thomas - 8 - Great
Lati - 8 - Great
JDS - 9 - MOM
Onyeka - 6 - solid but hampered by injury
Grimes 7 - loses a point for losing his man at the corner but otherwise good as always
Esse - 6 - Tidy, want more of him sticking to the wing, wanted to drift inside way too much which limited the work Milan could do.
Rudoni - 8 - looking back to last season Rudoni, great driving with the ball
EMC - 7 - good work first half, tired second and dropped off
Wright - 7 - good goal, ball control in tight spaces was a bit off, looked leggy like EMC second half.

Subs:
Torp - 5 - really felt the drop off from Onyeka, it’s like having two grimes wit nobody to break the play or connect to the forwards.
Tats - 6 - tidy
BTA - 6 - tidy
Simms - 7 - great work chasing for the goal

It seems very clear that FL had asked Torp to play deeper when he came on. He was playing like a sweeper at times yesterday.

He was clearly asked to play in a deeper lying role yesterday.

Didn't he nearly set Wright up with a great defence splitting pass?

When grimes kept droppin into centre half (before we had kitching or thomas who would push higher ) we lost a pass into midfield . It meant we kept having to pass wide and turn back and pass back inside because there was no pass on .

Really frustrating and i find it odd that he started doing it once onyeka went off
Strikes me as a tactical decision to be honest. In the second half Stoke were happy to put 10 men behind the ball all stationed in their own half. There was less space to work with.

They didn’t really have a choice either because we completely shut them down bar a lapse from a corner. Only Oxford (H) had less xG iirc.

He seems to see Eccles as a 10 so not that surprising. I’m not sure Eccles has played the DM role this season has he?
Correct, Eccles has put in some good performances at AM whereas Torp has barely played there for us. Not sure why the narrative that he’s better at AM keeps being pushed.

Eccles is similar to Rudoni in some respects, just he’s nowhere near as good at dribbling and taking people on as Rudoni is. Final ball, shooting and crossing there’s similarities there.

Yeah, that's what I mean. Josh has done really well in that role higher up the pitch, but Frank seems unwilling to play him in what (at least in my eyes) is his more natural deeper position.

Not sure I agree it’s his more natural position TBH. He’s not really great at breaking up play, his talents are his eye for goal, his ability to pick a pass and his energy. I think he really suits the number ten role. I always quite liked him a RWB earlier in his career because he’s good in the final third at getting his head up and picking a pass rather than just lumping it towards the area like a lot of players.

Better goals per minute than Rudi. Though I think if his form keeps up that won’t be the same at the end of the season. Still 1 in 3 for Josh is a respectable return.

I have never thought of them as remotely similar players. All about opinions I suppose.
Technique wise, yes and it’s probably something Lampard has picked up on. Eccles strikes the ball v well, be it a cross, shot or pass and defends well from the front but the similarities stop there.

What Eccles doesn’t have in his game is dribbling, doesn’t really take on players or drive with the ball in the same way Rudoni or Grimes does.

Eccles is a good player overall but similar to my criticisms of Sakamoto have been, isn’t really ‘elite’ in any one attribute.

Are u kidding me ? Were u even there? He was amazing first half, got between the lines so many times and drove us forward. He was man marked 2nd half and Stoke were alot more compact! Definitely his best game this season since he came back from injury
