What a player btw , this just popped up on my twitter and i just felt a wave of nostalgia .. Ronaldo nazario was better but this guy was one of best around

Utterly lethal

I think when it comes to 90s/early 00s football we're very much on the same page. One of my favourite ever players. Was watching a goal compilation of his just the other day.
Serie A had some outrageous talent at the time.

Great player. Though my favourite striker from Serie A around that time (maybe slightly later I suppose) was Francesco Totti.

Mainly for this goal alone:

Joint 90s/00s dream team

Buffon
Cafu
Maldini
Thuram
Roberto Carlos
Beckham
Zidane
Pirlo
Giggs
Shearer
Henry

I'd struggle to name a top 11 for this decade tbh

Need to pull you up Giggs. I'd have Luis Figo or even Rivaldo who played on the left at times.

In terms of this decade, I've thought long and hard over this one...

I think I'd have Ronaldinho in for Giggs and Ronaldo in for Shearer.

Otherwise it's hard to disagree with the rest!

It's too difficult as there was genuinely too many good players. Most people would land on a similar GK and back 4 i think, I'd kick Thuram out for Nesta, wasn't Thuram more a RB? He's be my second choice RB after the one you have in. I'd change the rest of your team other than Zidane, i think i'd struggle to get Henry in even though he's my favourite Prem player of all time! I absolutely loved Rivaldo, he'd have to be in somewhere.

I think the reason it's so hard is, not only were there more eye catching players, we've discussed this before but the players were more well spread across teams/countries. Now the top handful just collect them like football stickers. No way a serious GOAT number 9 like Batistuta would be staying at a club like Fiorentina so long these days. The money wasn't all in one place.

Shearer scored nearly 300 PL goals and was just my favourite player growing up. Giggs and Beckham for me the two iconic wide players from that awesome Man Utd team.

No chance I'd pick Beckham.

Pull it more narrow and play Makelele.

I'd put Maldini on the left and play Cannavaro, I'd drop Roberto Carlos. Think he was over-rated other than a free kick taker.

Yeah this kind of thing is a very personal thing, and not necessarily reflective of actual abilities or achievements - but just the kind of player you loved watching or particular memories you have of certain players. Good times.

Thuram I had in mind as a CB who dabbled at RB. I just have a bias towards England as being home to the best forwards of that time though they're run close by Ronaldo. Personal preferences on the pairings though, got to have rampaging Brazilian full backs, Serie A centre backs, Fergie's wingers and my favourite strikers from that era.

Someone from the era who gets seriously slept on for me, probably because an old slightly clapped out version arrived on our shores at Chelsea, is Kyiv/Milan Shevchenko. Absolutely lethal CF. Proper player!

That randomly got me thinking about Adrian Mutu
First time i've heard Mutu mentioned in a while, and never thought i'd see it in a thread about the greats! It is relevant though as he was a good player and points to a time when even small countries had very good players dripping out their eyeballs. I believe Adrain Ilie of Valencia would have been Romanias other main forward at the time. Can think of a few other good players they had too. Would struggling to name one Romanian international these days.

Totti's somewhat overlooked as he stayed with his club, but one of the all-time best players for me. If he had moved to Milan or Real Madrid when the chances arose he'd have won more trophies and personal accolades but you can't beat the story he had.
