Because good tho he was in a pisspoor team, he wasn’t good enough to make the difference and keep them up.
The following year Ipswich gambled on loaning Kalvin Phillips rather than signing Hamer.
His subsequent performance in the championship only served to reinforce the point that the best player of the division wasn’t enough to get his team promoted.
The fitness issues are real. He was unable to complete 90 mins in two Wembley play off finals and - arguably - both incidents resulted in his team losing the final. Since the start of this season his physical appearance has seemed less athletic and clubs will know all about his rumoured refuelling habits.
In fairness, he got injured in our playoff final but the rest of this is valid.
He's a great Championship player but if we're actually serious about staying up, he probably isn't going to be a starter. I do think a lot of posters on here have a hyper-idealised view of him as a player because he was great for us. He did well in the Prem, but there's a reason Prem teams passed on him and the rumours of his off the field shenanigans have persisted.
Silly question with his defence numbers could this reflect him in part playing on the left wing and not in the centre of the pitch?
Clearly unfit as well but that seems to be the case for the entire United squad
It's benchmarked against other AMs and his numbers are way behind Rudoni's with the exception of interceptions. Him playing further forward is a symptom rather than a cause of his defensive output that's behind most CMs.
Posters have been expressing concern of how 'open we've been' in recent games yet want to put Hamer next Grimes who hasn't really played CM since the Prem years. Hamer would never have to cover the same amount of ground as Torp/Eccles would back in 22/23 because our shape was a lot more compact defensively.
He’s been playing mostly out wide for Sheff Utd (a ridiculous decision btw) so of course his defensive numbers won’t be the same. Doesn’t mean he’s lost the ability to do it.
Hamer's defensive numbers are behind Rudoni, Eccles, Torp, Grimes and Allen. If we sign him, he won't be playing CM and those numbers aren't because he's playing LW, looking back at his historical data does not corroborate your point at all.
The reality is, playing AM/LW is probably his best position now because he has a freer role doing the things he's best at.
